Celebrity deaths that shocked you

Which celebrity’s death do you feel shocked at?

I would probably say Robin Williams. Which is probably an obvious one. George Micheal and Bowie also.

Michael Jackson really shocked me too. I think I was listening to the radio when it was announced by Richard Bacon (unless I’ve had a Mandela moment) and I was so shocked.

everynameistaken123 · 30/06/2025 20:32

Natasha Richardson

And many of the others mentioned here.

I'm shocked people care that he did, therefore his death shocked me.

Shocked that people cared when arguably the biggest pop star in the world died relatively young and suddenly, ok then...

GoldenNuggets08 · 30/06/2025 20:34

I refused to believe Liam Payne's death for a few hours, thought it was some sick joke started online by someone. Caroline Flack's death really shocked me!

Pebbles16 · 30/06/2025 20:36

The horror that was 2016 shook me somewhat.
I remember my instinctive physical reaction to Michael Hutchence's death (it was odd: my reaction and how it weirdly mimicked his death even though I had no idea at the time about how he died).
Kirsty MacColl sits with me as a shock because of the nature of her demise.
Helen McCrory because I happened to meet her once. I went to Medea on my own and had to "go for a steadying glass" afterwards. She and a number of cast came into the pub and she came up and asked if I had been at the theatre (obviously had the look of a woman who had been rather displaced by the theatre); she and I got chatting. We were of similar age and she was so lovely.
But I think the most. shocking was when I was a child and Lord Louis Mountbatten was blown up by the IRA. He was a "local" and I remember it adding to my fear about their power. My understanding is much more nuanced nowadays, but at the time it was terrifying.

Matthew Perry for me, I know he had his demons but didn't expect his life to end like that.

Waggytail · 30/06/2025 20:41

I don't know if anyone here followed WWE in the early 2000s but Chris Benoit's death was literally horrifying. He murdered his wife and child before killing himself. Afterwards when they did his post mortem they said he was so brain damaged from his career in wrestling (getting hit in the head and face repeatedly over span of years) that his brain was similar to an 85 year old with alzheimers even though he was only 40.

Amy Winehouse mainly as people used to go to her gigs when she was clearly off her face. Sign of those times that no one thought this might actually be an issue, no one stepped in to put her safety first. Also find it triggering as my DB had drug issues around this time. I know everyone will say she was an adult but it always starts much younger. What makes one person an addict over another - often predisposition plus opportunity.

Traveller2025 · 30/06/2025 20:43

Michael Hutchence
Heath Ledger
George Michael
Princess Diana

Heath Ledger, Mark from Smart (I used to watch him on it as a kid!) and Sean Locke

How did I not know this about Mark? What a sad ending x

LeaveALittleNote · 30/06/2025 20:45

I was most shocked by Michael Jackson’s death, even though looking back I can see he was obviously in bad health with a precarious lifestyle, and was possibly not going to live a long life. Massive shock at the time, though.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 30/06/2025 20:45

Diana's death- it was a Saturday night/Sunday morning, the news started filtering through . This was before Social Media updating . I went to get petrol (I was going on a training course ) the newspapers had the headlines "Diana hurt in crash" ( or similar) but they'd gone to print before it was updated .

Freddie Mercury- the Sunday tabloids headlines "Freddie:I have AIDS" then on the Monday morning his death was announced . He was always very private about his health but when you look back at his last videos you could see how painfully thin he was . (These Are The Days Of Our Lives)
I spent the day listening to the news as I was driving about (and music of course)

Now whenever a celebrity looks unwell it is plastered over news , they cannot go out with a hangover without someone speculating

Darius Campbell. I saw him several times in West End musicals, and met him once very briefly as he was getting his lunch next to The Savoy (where he was performing in Funny Girl with Sheridan Smith). A nicer, politer (and handsome) bloke you couldn't wish to meet.

OMG, I didn't know he died! I remember on one of the very first reality Simon Cowell programmes. BGT, Pop idol or something. He got a lot of stick, but I thought he had a lovely voice.

I still feel so sad when I hear colourblind on my play list.

Heath Ledger and Stephen Gately... And poor Anton Yelchin.

Yes, what happened to Yelchin was so sad. Makes me sad to watch films with him in.

Sidebeforeself · 30/06/2025 20:47

2016 was a weird year for celebrity deaths. And my poor Mum

FizzingAda · 30/06/2025 20:47

John Lennon
Freddie Mercury
Maeve Binchy

lcakethereforeIam · 30/06/2025 20:48

In no particular order

Chris Cornell. Amazing musician, fantastic singer and songwriter. There seemed to be a cluster of well known musicians taking their own lives. Perhaps it just seems like that looking back.

Neil Peart, the cancer that took him is very cruel.

Magdalen Berns, far too young.

Prince, although I was never a fan, his death was an unpleasant surprise.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 30/06/2025 20:50

Many of those already mentioned.
Also
Haydn Gwynne I had seen her on stage in July and she died a couple of months later after a very late cancer diagnosis.

ScholesPanda · 30/06/2025 20:51

Heath Ledger

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/06/2025 20:52

Heath Ledger was a big shock.

morden123 · 30/06/2025 20:57

Elvis

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/06/2025 20:57

Taylor Hawkins, drummer from Foo Fighters.
And pretty much everyone else mentioned.

Genuine question, why "obvious"?

Sidebeforeself · 30/06/2025 21:00

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude I did not know that! And two years ago! Always liked her

Scampilicous · 30/06/2025 21:00

rik mayall - comedy legend taken far too soon 😭
