How are people affording this lifestyle?

Just curious if anyone can shed liJust curious if anyone can shed light on this. I know a couple a few years older than me (late 20s/early 30s) living in Newton-le-Willows. He works as an admin/warehouse inventory clerk at some small frozen and she did not go to uni, she has no LinkedIn, never mentions any kind of work or side hustle.

And yet they’ve been on a couple of holidays in the last year, seem to eat out occasionally, and post pics of family days out etc. It’s not luxury by any means, but still — two kids and one modest income??

Are they just really good with money? Family help? Universal Credit top-ups?

Genuinely trying to understand how people make it work on paper when everything is so expensive these days.

Or maybe just working and spending carefully? It's not that unheard of to be able to manage your money is it?!

Quite. What's LinkedIn got to do with it? If it's not on LinkedIn, it doesn't exist? Mad. Stop stalking these people.

Dominicus · 23/06/2025 15:49

Would it make a difference to your life if you knew the answer? If you want that kind of lifestyle then look at what you can do to take steps towards that.

cheesycheesy · 23/06/2025 15:52

It’s hardly a life of luxury. They may be vey frugal and have few outgoings in other parts of life.

Nina1013 · 23/06/2025 15:53

I don’t have LinkedIn and I earn well - not quite six figures but not a million miles away.
My husband didn’t go to uni (but does have LinkedIn since you seem to think it’s relevant….) and earns an awful lot.
Your post is just utterly bizarre!

RealEagle · 23/06/2025 15:53

OP Have you always been this bitter and jealous?

Bloody hell my cousin lives in Newton le Willows, didn't go to uni (she does have a job) has a child and a partner with a manual job and she goes on holiday every year! And day trips too! Shall I call the police?

I think you should, yes.

Pinepeak2434 · 23/06/2025 15:54

I no longer put my work details on linkedin - I don’t want all my neighbours or nosey people not in my life knowing where I work. Doesn’t mean I don’t work.

Grammarnut · 23/06/2025 15:55

Good with money. You don't have to have degree to get a good job or earn a good salary, either. You don't know what the male member of this couple earns, nor that the female does not have a job. What's a 'side hustle'? Sounds USian - d'you mean a job on the side? She may have a part-time WFH job that pays for the hols (many women at home do this). Also two holidays in a year, days out posted on Facebook and occasional meals out is not extravagant nor unaffordable. Perhaps they have inherited money or the house, won the lottery and invested wisely.
You sound a bit envious - which is always destructive. If you want to know whether she works, ask her in a friendly way. You can't ask his salary - how do you know he isn't head of department where he works?

Edited

Same here. I haven’t updated mine in over a decade. Just as well as someone I don’t want knowing where I live/work would definitely be looking at it.

Could your cousin speak to the OP ,and tell her how it’s done.

thatsalad · 23/06/2025 15:57

Jesus, why are some people obsessed with other people's financies? She probably has a job, but no linkedin (like many other people), so like most other couples with two incomes, they can afford to eat out and occasional holidays. There you go, mystery solved

RogersOrganismicProcess · 23/06/2025 15:58

Also not on Linked in, and getting ready for our second holiday of the year (although the first was in this country).

How many Newton-le-Willows are there? If it the one nearish to Manchester, tiny mortgage may be your answer. It is hardly a luxurious area, unless you are comparing it to Parr or Derbyshire on th’ Hill!

TheChosenTwo · 23/06/2025 15:58

I think when people post this they’re hoping everyone responds to say “oh they’re living off of credit cards, it’s all for show, they can’t really afford it!”
And maybe in some cases it’s the truth. But there are also a myriad of other ways their lifestyle could be funded. Op read through the thread thoroughly, there are lots of suggestions as to how they can be paying for it.
What do you want anyone else to say? We don’t know them!

namechangeGOT · 23/06/2025 15:59

Me - Office Manager in construction company. A Level in Travel & Tourism. Never went to university.

DH - Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer/Plater Welder for same construction company. No A Levels. Never went to university.

Small Northern town.

Own our own house, mortgage paid off.

no LinkedIn between us because it’s full of pointless, pompous, jobsworth twats who like the sound of their own voices.

eat out twice a week and we’ve just come back from our 4th holiday this year.

I don’t understand your point?

Paganpentacle · 23/06/2025 15:59

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 23/06/2025 14:38

You sound creepy as fuck 😂

And what on earth does LinkedIn have to do with wealth? I’m not on LinkedIn and you’ve no idea what I earn

Ditto....

Bournetilly · 23/06/2025 16:00

It sounds like they are living a normal life, not luxurious. I have a decent job and I am not on linked in, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t work.

Parrbados, if you don't mind.

JLou08 · 23/06/2025 16:03

How do you know these people? You must not know them well if you don't know if she has a job. Quite the assumption to be making just because someone hasn't mentioned work and you found nothing on your LinkedIn search. I don't mention my work to people I don't know well, I also am not on LinkedIn. She could actually have quite a lucrative career for all you know.

This. And op sounds like someone who was told that anyone who didn't go to uni is destitute so she's shocked to find out it's not true

Maybe they're selling drugs? Have you alerted the police?

I really hope this is a joke

CitizenZ · 23/06/2025 16:05

I didn't know you shouldn't be able to afford eating out occasionally and going on holiday if you haven't been to Uni.

RisingSunn · 23/06/2025 16:07

I would suggest that you stop counting other people's money and mind your business.

Yeah this is peak batshit. Many people I know with no Uni degree earn waaaaaay more than some 'university educated!' 😂
