How are people affording this lifestyle?

Just curious if anyone can shed liJust curious if anyone can shed light on this. I know a couple a few years older than me (late 20s/early 30s) living in Newton-le-Willows. He works as an admin/warehouse inventory clerk at some small frozen and she did not go to uni, she has no LinkedIn, never mentions any kind of work or side hustle.

And yet they’ve been on a couple of holidays in the last year, seem to eat out occasionally, and post pics of family days out etc. It’s not luxury by any means, but still — two kids and one modest income??

Are they just really good with money? Family help? Universal Credit top-ups?

Genuinely trying to understand how people make it work on paper when everything is so expensive these days.

No idea of their financial situation or expediture. And it is up to them, what they spend on and how they live. They may have a mountain of debt to sustain their life style.

But l am often surprised by the seemingly , nice cushy lifestyle of some of the people who live near me Designer. clothes, flash cars. Family holidays in Disney world.

None of which would appeal to me by the way.

But they are hard working and seem to have ordinairy, but not particularly well paid jobs.

Maybe they are on some kind of fiddle or have rich relatives?

Who knows?

RowsOfFlowers · 26/06/2025 09:22

I hear you OP. Feels unfair.

BrightLeader · 27/06/2025 20:42

They probably have a lot of debt.

AmusedTaupePlayer · 25/06/2025 11:24

No it's not hard work bc anyone can do it. no need for qualifications such as ACA, CFA etc.

Well, if you were any good at your own role perhaps they’d pay you more.

BrightLeader · 27/06/2025 20:42

They probably have a lot of debt.

Not necessarily.
When we lived in cheap area our total house bills (without food) came to grand total of 750.... Even on NMW we would have been able to afford holidays etc then.

Don’t be silly @didntlikeanyofthesuggestions. They are in 500k of debt and it will all come crumbling down around them soon.

People say that about us I'm sure, but actually we just now have a very modest mortgage. We worked hard and bought multiple properties to have a more passive income, alongside our jobs.
My 60yr old neighbour often makes comments about my car or 6+ holidays a year when I am "just a carer" who's other half is "just" working at a holiday park part time... I just find it funny tbh.

I would spy on them. Try and obtain their tax returns and wage slips, try and intercept their post and ensure that they are not up to no good. I would also inform the police and possibly the secret services and social services to make sure.

MadamCholetsbonnet · 28/06/2025 19:42

I was joking 🤪. I don’t know why some people fail to comprehend that others either have more money than them, or that they just prioritise differently.

Quite often in these threads you see nasty posts insinuating it MUST be huge debt and they’ll regret it. Lots of people don’t know how to count their blessings.

Pessismistic · 28/06/2025 19:47

Hey op not everyone who goes to uni works hard sometimes it the minimum wage people who work the hardest. It really isn’t any of your business is it. She might be a rich person or on benefits but if they can afford it so what. I live by people who only 1 parent works full time and have 4 kids and seemingly manage yet there will be another household with 2 incomes with 1 dc who struggle it’s about what you choose to prioritise. Don’t be jealous just make your life how you want it to be.

How does another family's financial situation affect you in any way? Posting about it online is very weird

the same way others get envious of celebs or billionaires etc.

Yeah. Most of us don’t do that tho.

you never feel envy?

OP posts:
MurdoMunro · 29/06/2025 11:33

Against billionaires? I might get angry about the systematic unfairness of societies that allow them to hoard resources while others are pilloried for being poor. But envy the tat that they buy, the empty, desperate, lonely lives they lead? God no.

As for distant family members who I barely know and seem to have about the average, why would I waste my headspace on that?

namechangeGOT · 29/06/2025 11:41

AmusedTaupePlayer · 29/06/2025 11:23

Why would I envy a family doing well for themselves? Going on holiday, nice house, meals out, clothes etc? Never once have I envied them that. I have all that myself. I envied them their children when I was enduring multiple miscarriages and undertaking cycle after cycle of IVF but I’m smart enough to know that it’s the way of the world and luck of the draw

Borgonzola · 29/06/2025 12:45

Is this a creative writing exercise or just AI? The mention of Newton le Willows is so odd Confused

Ghyur · 30/06/2025 09:33

This is ridiculous! For anyone who doesn’t know me personally, it would appear that I “don’t work” but I have my own business with 2 employees that allows me to appear as a “stay at home wife/mum.” Guess what I don’t have a LinkedIn profile 😱 I don’t need anyone to massage my ego through it. I think you need to concentrate on what’s going on inside your own four walls and stop sticking your nose into other peoples homes, finances, careers and “educational status.” 🙄

all of this is public data

Kindly @AmusedTaupePlayer you need to get a grip. Obsessing about the lifestyle of acquaintances is just plain weird. You need to get on with your own life.

and btw you don’t know the details of anyone else’s finances. I might look like a SAHM: but I’ve actually worked from home in a fairly well paid job for years

How is someone's employment public data?

Even if it was in the public realm, its still very weird to be so envious you go to the lengths of discuss another family's finances online. Get a hobby

Where someone works isn't public data just because you "know" someone their lifestyle isnt actually your business to share , I don't think you care though do you other people's feelings don't mean anything to you, this is a very long thread did you tell the thread what your job is how much you earn ?
