People drinking alcohol all day long on all-inclusive

I am watching people in our adults only hotel drinking cocktails all day long. By 10 am, the pool bar is pool. There is never any trouble, they sleep it off and get back on beers, sparky wine and cocktails. Then they have drinks before dinner, wine with dinner and cocktails at the main bars.

I am a little jealous as they seem to have a great time, laughing and socialising while more than one drink will keep me awake and sweating all night and tired all day, so I save myself for one beverage before dinner.

No big point to this post, other than marvel at our differences in alcohol tolerance. All mixed ages, people my age mid forties drink as much as anyone else.

I had a wine and two cocktails at lunchtime. Came home, fell asleep on the sofa, woke up with a vile headache. Nope just can't hack it.

Five drinks a day is knocking them back all day.

How? How is drinking five drinks in a day doing that?

People on MN are batshit.

Not necessarily. I barely drink at home, maybe 2 or 3 drinks a month. When I’m on an AI holiday, too right I’m making the most of it!

Sorry to pick on you in particular- I could have asked anyone! You drink about the same as me day to day. I would feeel rotten if I drank multiple drinks every day on holiday. Does it not affect you like this? Genuinely curious!

Definitely not my kind of holiday, but each to their own. I like to get out and about and see the country i’ve travelled to, sample local cuisines etc. There was a time I enjoyed AI when the kids were small but not now. Generally there’s always one very loud family who drink to excess day and night and cause trouble.

I just can’t imagine drinking in the morning or knocking back several cocktails a day but we are all different. I think people who go for A1 aren’t much interested in seeing the sights or the culture they’re in , it’s more about just the hotel. I have never been A1 but for those who are in the hotels we have been in seem not to leave the hotel really. Why go to another country just to lie around in a hotel drinking all day?

Edited

This isn't always true. We go AI as it's cheaper than buying food and drinks individually with kids. We also go out of the hotel on sightseeing trips, we always do a boat trip and DS and DH do some scuba diving. Our hotel is just a base where some days we will chill.

Because.. and hold the phone for this...

We don't all make the same choices. And your choices don't make you better than other people.

God the judgement from some is hilarious.

GameOfJones · 16/06/2025 07:50

I've never been to an AI resort that didn't water down their alcohol. The drinks are usually very, very weak.

This would be DH and I. We wouldn't drink alcohol before lunchtime but some cocktails by the pool in the afternoon, then back to the room for a siesta and a shower, out for dinner and then drinks in the evening when we're on holiday is bloody lovely. Nowhere to be and we can relax and enjoy.

If you are seeing people drinking from 10am but nobody drunk or causing issues then the alcohol is very clearly watered down as there'd be carnage if it was full strength!

It doesn’t seem to, no. I generally drink the pina colada or similar slushes from a machine that seem to be ubiquitous on AI holidays and I think they’ve got a very low alcohol content compared to if you ordered one in a bar. I also drink lots of pop and water which dilutes it further! I might have an occasional beer too but I don’t drink wine or spirits beyond the odd baileys and kahlua.

I have to say though, I’ve been to 6 different AI hotels and I’ve never seen the drunken antics that some people seem to think are compulsory with AI. I seem to have a knack of picking hotels where most of the other tourists are Dutch and/or Spanish though so maybe that makes a difference 🤷‍♀️.

You are allowed to leave the hotel on an AI holiday you know 😂. They don’t lock the gates.

We had never gone AI until a winter sun holiday in 2023. We loved the range of food and drinks on offer. Went to another AI hotel last year and this year we have booked another for our summer holiday too. We still go out to bars and restaurants but have the back up of food at the hotel too.

neither of us are heavy drinksrs but we loved the option of just walking to the bar to get a drink and not having to carry cash.

we also love sightseeing and ventured far and wide on the island we had travelled to. Wih AI you are allowed to leave the hotel! 😂😂😂😂

Five drinks a day is knocking them back all day.

Cool.

I mean it’s hardly “knocking them back” by having one drink and then about 3 hours in between, but continue on your weird crusade if you want.

Yorkshiremum80 · 16/06/2025 08:27

I've been many AI hotels over the years in various countries and only in one have I seen drunk people. This was in Mexico and it was Americans in the adult only pool. They were happy drunk so it wasn't an issue at all. We have never seen any issues, fights, people chasing for sunbeds or drunken antics ever. Maybe some are like that but definitely not all.

We do the same but go half board. All the hotels I've been to recently are cashless and just add your drinks to the bill . I then pay once at checkout. It works out far cheaper than AI and we go out for lunch different places.

This annoys me! Because I try to avoid sugar but I’m happy to drink a proper drink. So watered down drinks are the worst of both worlds.

Anyone go any tips on how to avoid this? Beer I suppose.

Guessing the wine isn’t watered down?

RabbitsRock · 28/06/2025 09:02

I’ve never done AI but back in the days when I drank, I would have been in heaven! One of my DSils is a big drinker & she definitely gets her moneys worth from an AI holiday but she doesn’t get silly/ aggressive drunk. It’s naughty that cocktails are sometimes watered down as AI isn’t cheap!

No but it’s generally not great. Having said that the last place we were In Fuerteventura had very acceptable Cava

rockstarshoes · 28/06/2025 17:16

A couple of glasses of cold white wine with your lunch & then back to your sun lounger for a nap! Absolute bliss!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 30/06/2025 20:12

We just got back from an AI, 5*, adult only hotel.

I didn't see one single person behaving in a drunken manner. It was all very civilised.

We were there for 7 days and drank in the evening on maybe 4 of those evenings. And by drink I mean I had 3 or 4 glasses of prosecco, DH had the same number of vodkas and pepsi. We also enjoyed a couple of beers.

It's entirely possible to go AI and not have it a drunken mess..
