People drinking alcohol all day long on all-inclusive

I am watching people in our adults only hotel drinking cocktails all day long. By 10 am, the pool bar is pool. There is never any trouble, they sleep it off and get back on beers, sparky wine and cocktails. Then they have drinks before dinner, wine with dinner and cocktails at the main bars.

I am a little jealous as they seem to have a great time, laughing and socialising while more than one drink will keep me awake and sweating all night and tired all day, so I save myself for one beverage before dinner.

No big point to this post, other than marvel at our differences in alcohol tolerance. All mixed ages, people my age mid forties drink as much as anyone else.

I'm rather looking forward to my 10am beer at the pool bar later this week.

TheCurious0range · 15/06/2025 16:42

Even when I was younger and liked a drink I didn't day drink on holiday, it made me sleepy, is only drink in the evenings, but then I also didn't like lay by the pool AI type holidays then either.
Maybe a beer or glass of wine with lunch.
Can't handle it at all now though so have 2/3 drinks in the evening on holiday and soft drinks during the day

Why sad & pathetic? Is it because you don’t like doing it? I think it’s lovely to be able to be relax and sit by the pool in the sun with a few cocktails or beers if you have nothing to do and nowhere to be. It’s a blissful contrast to my normal hectic life. Who’s it harming?

Well it’s terribly unhealthy for you, so yeah I find drinking alcohol all day long to be really quite pathetic and sad. Just as someone drinking on a park bench at 11am is quite sad, I see someone drinking beer in the airport at 7am or on AI at 10am till bedtime really quite sad too.

Honestly, the people who sit and obsess about what others are doing on holiday are the sad and pathetic ones.

Not obsessing about it! Was just confused that the OP was envious. When the thought that goes through my head (momentarily) is ‘oh dear, they may have a problem…’

BrickHare · 15/06/2025 16:47

They sound like they are having fun, laughing, dancing and socialising. You however do not.

tammienorrie · 15/06/2025 16:53

Even if you don't drink alcohol AI is worth it to have an endless supply of Fanta lemon, water, and other soft drinks whenever you want them.

Not necessarily true, I rarely drink but on holiday in May I spent my afternoons drinking cocktails in a beach bar before dinner

Same here!

My special talent is being able to drink cocktails endlessly like I do it every day and am only days away from jaundice and a liver transplant…when I actually rarely drink!

Don't go ai go somewhere that is within walking distance of lots of bars and restaurants

When I get to choose, that is what we do. As I said, AI makes me feel like a pampered zoo animal. But my family unfortunately get a vote and prefer less, ummmmm, basic accommodations than I do. When I travel alone or with a friend it’s staying in homestays with local families drinking vodka from communal bowls!

Any tips for when I’m forced to AI?

PilotFish · 15/06/2025 16:54

Breaking news: different people like to holiday in different ways.

I love day drinking on holiday with a good book or over a nice meal with my husband. As long as you aren’t spoiling anyone else’s time by being loud and annoying then what’s the harm? Normal life is hectic and stressful, you should do what you like on holiday. I say this but we now have a 1yr old so this years holiday will probably be a little different haha

WhineAndWine1 · 15/06/2025 16:58

@tuffinmopscan I suggest you go away with more entertaining and engaging people if you are spending your time judging people?

BarneyOreilly · 15/06/2025 16:59

I’ve just got back from a fly and flop 5 star AI in Crete. It was an adults only hotel and mostly people there were 35+. Plenty of day drinking going on from about 11am, didn’t see a single person drunk, rowdy or annoying. The service was nice and slow, it was table service only so they controlled the speed, meaning it was impossible to just bang down drinks even if you’d wanted to.

I love AI for lots of reasons- I know what I’ve spent on the holiday in advance, and by the time I would have bought water, lunch, a few beers or wine and some snacks daily at hotel prices I’ve more than made up the difference with the HB price.

I go on city breaks for culture- fly and flop AI holidays are there for me to read a book a day in the sun while I look out at the sea from my sunbed. I have no idea why the thimbleful of sherry MN crowd are even going on AI holidays unless they are hellbent on eating their weight in mediocre pasta salad and weird creamy cakes every day.

DiscoBob · 15/06/2025 17:07

I would imagine eating and drinking more than is strictly advisable is part of the fun of a holiday, especially AI?

People save for ages to go away and want to unwind and have a laugh. Maybe indulge and be a bit greedy.

If people are acting disorderly then complain or leave the resort for the day/for dinner etc.

It might be a bit annoying to see lots of drunk people but they're just trying to have fun. Of course they shouldn't be spoiling other people's fun either.

I'd want to stay somewhere much more chilled and quiet to avoid such things if possible.

I drink throughout the day on holiday and iv never been drunk on holiday.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/06/2025 17:13

I think the AI booze is very weak. I know I was eating in a Mexican restaurant (not while on AI) and ordered a pitcher of margaritas and although it tasted of margarita, there was less booze in it than in one that I would mix myself.

Tripthelightfantastical · 15/06/2025 17:13

Why does having fun have to involve being drunk?

For a fortnight a year? On holiday?

I wish to out myself as a pretty moderate drinker but even so, when on holiday I let loose a bit!

Sofiewoo · 15/06/2025 15:40

I probably look like this but it’s not exactly knocking them back all day long.
On holiday at the minute and we will have a fizz at breakfast, a cocktail by the pool while the kids nap, maybe a wine with lunch, and then a cocktail and a wine with dinner.
Over the course of 14-15 hours with meals in between it’s not remotely drunk or hangover territory.

Edited

Exactly the same. Lol at the sad and pathetic comments.

DryDay · 15/06/2025 17:30

I used to be addicted to alcohol - am now many years free from it.

Some people book AI specifically because of the alcohol on tap. You can booze all day and all night and no one will judge because they’re at it too.

I’d have been one of the drinkers making ‘friends’ in the pool bar, years ago. Now I find the faux confidence and sociability of boozers such a turnoff.

Don’t be jealous - it’s a horrible merry-go-round they’re on. Go to the beach - far more beautiful and natural than a man-made pool and bar. Read your book and listen to the waves and relax.

Wish you a lovely holiday

Crushed23 · 15/06/2025 17:38

I’m only in my 30s and have a 2 drink limit these days. Maybe 3 on holiday. My hangovers are biblical so my intolerance is not something I’m sad about - I’m holding back so I can function the next day and not waste it in bed.

Agree with PP, no reason why you can’t socialise if you’re drinking less than other people. The effect you get from a drink or two is probably the same as they get from 5 or 6 drinks. Don’t overthink it. Go have fun. 😊

user2848502016 · 15/06/2025 17:51

I do it on an AI holiday but not a heavy drinker usually. The drinks are quite small usually and the cocktails are quite weak. I usually have soft drinks too and plenty of water along with wine at lunch and dinner! I know it’s not exactly healthy but it’s only once every year or two that we’ll go on that type of holiday

I have never been AI and never will, we have been half board for skiing but this has all just confirmed why I never would!

Why? What has been said on this thread?

gingercat02 · 15/06/2025 18:19

A pre lunch cocktail, glass of fizz or a cold rosé is what holidays are all about (lighthearted). Wine with meals, a sundowner cocktail, a few spirits after dinner. All lovely on an AI break
