People drinking alcohol all day long on all-inclusive

I am watching people in our adults only hotel drinking cocktails all day long. By 10 am, the pool bar is pool. There is never any trouble, they sleep it off and get back on beers, sparky wine and cocktails. Then they have drinks before dinner, wine with dinner and cocktails at the main bars.

I am a little jealous as they seem to have a great time, laughing and socialising while more than one drink will keep me awake and sweating all night and tired all day, so I save myself for one beverage before dinner.

No big point to this post, other than marvel at our differences in alcohol tolerance. All mixed ages, people my age mid forties drink as much as anyone else.

Can't you join in with the socialising even though you not drinking? But I'm the same in that I'd love to have an afternoon drink on a nice day or trip out but these days my tolerance to alcohol is so low that one drink makes me feel drunk. I feel so woozy and tired its not worth it.

kielifor · 15/06/2025 15:08

I know what you mean. Those people probably started their holidays drinking at the airport at 6am.
All inclusive holidays used to be very good value but I think prices now reflect that most people do it for the booze. AI is only worthwhile imo if you are a seriously heavy drinkers so we usually go HB.

I like a drink, I would like to be able to indulge more on holiday but my tolerance is rubbish. I'd love a pre-dinner cocktail! I usually manage a glass of wine with dinner and a beer later. Our bar bill is a fraction of the cost of AI compared with HB.

These people are well seasoned drinkers, they’ll be used to drinking this amount on a regular basis.

If I had drinks before about 4pm I’d be half cut and asleep after a few hours. Wake up dehydrated with a banging headache. I save it until the evening but I do admire their stamina

TheChosenTwo · 15/06/2025 15:20

I love AI holidays with just me and dh for this reason 😂 we don’t drink before lunchtime though and the beers are usually very weak. Never bother with the cocktails cos they’re invariably a bit shit by the pool but a few lovely light refreshing beers in the sunshine in the afternoon is blissful. Go and have a little siesta if we need it and then get ready to go out somewhere (we like AI for the ease but usually venture outside the complex for some dinners/daytrips/lunches to break it up a bit.
When we go on holiday with the dc the vibes are very different and while we may have a beer with lunch (as do the older 2 dc now!) we wouldn’t laze about just drinking/reading etc, we are going out and about doing things. So when we go without them we can please ourselves and some days that involves lazing by the pool noses in our books and drinking. Bloody lovely!

Orangemintcream · 15/06/2025 15:26

I couldn’t do it either.

I love a cocktail but I’m pissed after 2. If I have one it wears off and I get a headache.

Tripthelightfantastical · 15/06/2025 15:30

Think what their livers look like! In no way is it admirable to drink all day long.

Not necessarily true, I rarely drink but on holiday in May I spent my afternoons drinking cocktails in a beach bar before dinner

Idontjetwashthefucker · 15/06/2025 15:37

Oops, hadn't finished, I'd them go back for a shower and a change of clothes before heading out for dinner and more cocktails

tuffinmops · 15/06/2025 15:39

I just find it really sad and pathetic. No
envy here! It does put me off going AI again though as the one time I went, I really didn’t get my money’s worth compared to the people who can eat and drink all day!

Sofiewoo · 15/06/2025 15:40

I probably look like this but it’s not exactly knocking them back all day long.
On holiday at the minute and we will have a fizz at breakfast, a cocktail by the pool while the kids nap, maybe a wine with lunch, and then a cocktail and a wine with dinner.
Over the course of 14-15 hours with meals in between it’s not remotely drunk or hangover territory.

MrsTerryPratchett · 15/06/2025 15:40

I can’t day drink either. DH wants to stay in AI, I hate them. Don’t get my money’s worth, feel like a pampered zoo animal rather than experiencing the local area. I will be at one in July :(

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 15/06/2025 15:41

I do love cocktails and wine, but I wouldn't drink much during the day. Maybe a beer or two at most.

I'm off on an AI to Rhodes on Wednesday and have read that the cocktails at this 5*, adult only hotel are way too strong. So I'll probably avoid them anyway 🤣 I'm not a lightweight but I'm not a big drinker either.

hyggetyggedotorg · 15/06/2025 15:43

Aren’t the cocktails all very watered down at these resorts though?

Admittedly, we’ve only done AI once but the drinks were all a small cup of ice with a small amount of weak drink (because the ice took most of the space). If drinks are like that in other places I can see how you could drink alcohol all day without actually feeling drunk.

ThisNeedsToWork · 15/06/2025 15:44

At least you’re at an adults only hotel! I see this all the time at family hotels where both parents are sozzled by lunchtime and their kids are running feral! Why is it that people think they can abdicate parenting responsibilities whilst on holiday? Especially in AI resorts. It’s just so chavvy and tacky.

EggandStress · 15/06/2025 15:47

I’m so glad to find some people like me. I could booze with the best of them in my 20s but now, a sniff of alcohol before 6pm and I’ve got an instant headache and need a sleep. After 6pm, 3 drinks is a wild night for me and I only do that once or twice a year.

I hope you are enjoying your holiday @CeRaViewith or without alcohol.

DifferentChild · 15/06/2025 15:48

I very rarely drink at home and don’t think about it but on holiday it seems perfectly reasonable to have a pina colada by the pool any time after midday, before that is pushing it. Mind you I’ve waited years for my children to be of an age where I’m not watching them constantly in the water and they’re more likely to be joining me in a cocktail. I absolutely detest seeing the parents with kids getting loud and legless whilst clearly not supervising their offspring

Why is it sad and pathetic I like to drink throughout the day on holiday. You drink differently when your drinking all day its slower and with food and water and maybe a sleep in-between its very unusual to get drunk like this and I find it better then drinking in a 3/4 hour space in the evening and necking drink after drink and getting hammered its called pacing yourself

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 15/06/2025 15:52

I probably have my first cocktail before lunch time when in an AI, and will carry on and have one any time I fancy it….but I have never once felt even slightly impacted by alcohol when on holiday. Neither has my partner.

wild that someone strolling by could be spending their holiday judging us for being sad and pathetic instead of enjoying themselves however they see fit.

tammienorrie · 15/06/2025 15:53

We have done AI several times and haven't really seen this - apart from one hotel in Mexico with about 12 very rowdy Dutch people who appeared to be intent on drinking loads all the time.

The cocktails in particular are very weak, you'd struggle to be drunk even drinking them solidly all day. If the drinks were strong, and people were drinking heavily from 10am, there would be carnage by mid-afternoon. If you're not seeing people falling about drunk, throwing up, getting into fights etc then either the drinks are very weak, or they are not drinking as much as you think they are.

I have no issue with people having a few drinks on holiday even if I rarely drink myself.

mynameiscalypso · 15/06/2025 15:55

I was thinking about this earlier. I’d quite like to be one of those people who can day drink gently and have a lovely time. I had a glass of wine at lunch this week had a massive headache for the rest of the day. I think I can only really drink for a couple of hours before I’ve had enough and I’d generally prefer that to be in the evening, over dinner, rather than during the day when it just seems to be a waste because I’ll inevitably end up feeling shit.

BingoBling · 15/06/2025 15:55

I couldn't do it. I see people with beers or wine in pubs from mid afternoon and I can't do that without feeling wiped out by early evening.

mangobird · 15/06/2025 15:58

The cocktails are likely pretty watered down.

Yorkshiremum80 · 15/06/2025 16:00

We go on AI every year as we like a fly and flop, we also drink during the day on them. We are not sad and pathetic and to the pp who said imagine what they are like at home. We are both professionals with very good jobs and shock we aren't alcoholics. We only drink on a weekend and rarely during the day. When we do have a drink on a Friday or Saturday night it's 2 or 3 max. But on holiday we chill out and of we want a drink we will have one. Holidays are about doing what you wouldn't usually, my son wouldn't be allowed fizzy drinks or anything ice cream every day at home but he is on holiday. People need to be less judge and just enjoy their holiday. We never get drunk, I don't think I have ever felt remotely drunk on holiday. We drink slowly and with lots of water as well.

Why sad & pathetic? Is it because you don’t like doing it? I think it’s lovely to be able to be relax and sit by the pool in the sun with a few cocktails or beers if you have nothing to do and nowhere to be. It’s a blissful contrast to my normal hectic life. Who’s it harming?
