You’re a machine!!!

Hope it’s everything you hoped it would be

Thanks. I kept thinking about Frank Turner’s line - ‘I’ve got no new tricks, yeah I’m up
on bricks, but I’m a machine and I was built to
last’. It was tough today. Everything hurts but worth it.

BIossomtoes · 22/05/2025 20:34

Thinking of you, Cardi. The end will be amazing. 💐

Saucery · 22/05/2025 20:47

Good luck @cardibach. If it helps, I got emotional at the top of Vesuvius, after covid/long covid I couldn't walk across a room so to reach my goal was bloody amazing.

Enjoy every minute of your achievement.

The thing is, even if there were a mass wave of emigration, where to ? I suspect that the more mobile people (i.e educated, skilled) would probably not be as keen on the US as maybe a year ago.

And EU countries aren't as easy to move to as they once were.

I was talking to my recently graduated DS tonight& he was commenting on the number of his friends going to Australia- it seems to be top destination.

My DS is going to Canada for 2 years in a few weeks, relocating with the company he works for.

Politics keeps happening but I keep waking and it’s hard to keep up. 12 miles today. I’m knackered.

On a totally different note, i'm sooooo jealous.. in a nice way, the Camino is something i ve wanted to do for a long time..

Have a fantastic time!!!

Retail sales up sharply in April, consumer confidence up in this month. Energy prices coming down in July

PandoraSocks · 23/05/2025 09:30

Largest quarterly rise since July 2021. But I am sure it will be doomsplained away.

dontcallmelen · 23/05/2025 09:33

dontcallmelen · 23/05/2025 09:36

That is amazing.

We climbed Vesuvius in the July heat, it's a long way but worth it.

The lack of activity in lockdown (plus a dose of Covid) caused my knee to get so bad I was struggling to walk more than a mile. I’ve worked hard in fitness and strength and it’s quite emotional to be able to do all this even if it hurts!

dontcallmelen · 23/05/2025 16:52

cardi you are an inspiration ⭐️

“We’ve launched the largest criminal action against water companies in history.

When I said I would take on those pumping filth into our waters, I meant it.”

Excellent.

Presumably the BBC weren't interested.

PandoraSocks · 23/05/2025 17:49

Oh, there will be a backlash somehow.

PandoraSocks · 23/05/2025 17:54

How is your knee holding up @cardibach ?

How is your knee holding up @cardibach ?

It’s pretty stiff and sore today and has hurt off and on all the way but nothing too horrible. 6 miles to go.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2025 20:44

yes, Cardi, its an immense achievement even without your previous injury. An inspiration. A friend of mine tried to do the same stretch a couple of years ago but had to pull out because of hip problems. We've said we tackle it together in the next couple of years so I will take your advice before hand.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2025 20:52

In other news the Times is leading with a story about the NHS opening a network of mental health A&Es for those who are suicidal or suffering with mania. Walk in services. 10 Trusts have apparently already launched them. Its intended to speed up assessments, provide calm enviroments and relieve pressure on A&Es.

Not sure how they will staff them considering the shortages in staff in this specialty and despite the £26 million committed so far it will need more (to build infrastructure if nothing else) but if they can pull it off I will applaud them.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2025 20:55

Another story is that Conservative grassroots plot to get rid of Badenoch but I doubt that is news to anyone. I have no time for her (particularly after she put her name to a pamphlet about autistic kids having a financial advantage over their NT peers) but even I think they can't change leader AGAIN.

It’s excellent news. Ideally they can be located them close to A&E departments and use their current out of hours teams.

Unless you are super fit pick a slow walking version and self guided. That’s what we’ve done and even then some of the days were killers. It’s so well signposted you can’t really go wrong - just use google or Apple Maps to find your hotel at the end of the day. Use the app Camino Ninja for distances to coffee shops and a very clear map of the Camino itself. Have luggage porterage and do Dinner B&B. We came with Camino Ways.

pointythings · 23/05/2025 22:39

You're a legend, @cardibach . Meanwhile back here I am in A&E with DC1 who has scalded both legs in a cooking accident. 20 minutes from arrival to triage, now waiting for treatment, pain relief in place. Long live the NHS.

And DS1 has found he has passed his dissertation, which was severely in doubt at one point, so graduation here we come!
