So, is there a negative spin on Labour's win yet?

I am starting to wonder whether Trump and Musk are having us on?

The usual suspects are trying to downplay it. You wouldn’t expect anything else really.

So I see. It is a significant gain, given Labour has never won the seat before and weren't expected to this time.

The SNP vote collapsed. It’s one of those reorganised seats. Pre the rise of SNP Hamilton was solid Labour

SNP has held the seat since it was formed in 2011, hadn't it? I still think that it is a good result for Labour. Even the Guardian was positing that Labour would come third.

PandoraSocks · 06/06/2025 10:12

Farage is celebrating coming third.

The story is the amount of votes Reform gained. I would never have believed it before yesterday. However a caller on JV today explained. He is former SNP voter but is totally disillusioned because they have failed to get independence. He believes that Reform might offer a new referendum. 🙄. We’re a different country up here.

Yes, it does look like SNP votes went to Reform. I would be surprised if Reform ever wins a seat in Scotland. We shall see next year. My SNP supporting sibling is not happy.

SerendipityJane · 06/06/2025 10:23

Seems Zia Yusuf isn't the only one giving up on working towards a Reform government. The public have too.

However that Scottish result reminds us that it's entirely possible to rule the UK without a single Scottish vote. If you want a nightmare scenario, imagine a Reform majority in Westminster composed of entirely English MPs.

derxa · 06/06/2025 10:23

Hamilton used to have a thriving town centre. DM and I used to go shopping there. It’s clear from this morning’s footage that it’s now a shit hole. I don’t know what the answer is but politicians in general have let the place down for decades.

bombastix · 06/06/2025 11:18

The result in Hamilton is good for Labour but Reform did rather well. Not that far behind Labour. Nobody would have said Reform would be competitive for this seat a year ago and they were

Kemi Badenoch delivers a speech devoted to announcing that she will "likely" commit to taking the UK out of the ECHR, but adds that she "won't commit" to doing so now because she hasn't worked out a plan for doing it.

Kemi Badenoch asked about the Conservatives coming in a poor fourth in yesterday's Hamilton by-election and almost losing their deposit, she replies that "Larkhall is not the place where the Conservative party fightback starts".

i am going to say this right now. I think she was actually part of a government that was actively looking at this. They drafted a Bill of Rights on this exact subject.

Wolfson is great lawyer, but he’s not going to make the decision for her.

DuncinToffee · 06/06/2025 11:51

Reform is "another left wing party" says Kemi Badenoch

She also wants to revive the Rwanda Plan and is opposed to returning the Parthenon Marbles

She really, really, really wants to see the Tories go down the pan for ever. Is she a Labour plant?

The problem is - thanks to decades of pissing on a classical education - no one gives two shits about the Parthenon marbles. Not even the last Tory government which passed a law allowing them to be returned.

Yes, they aren't talking about that are they ?
