>blaming the West and NATO for his decision to invade Ukraine.

The approach of an abuser.

>until a rational, intelligent adult is back in the room

There can easily be a 4 - 8 - 12 year run of Trump - TrumpClone - TrumpChild.

The USA as Europe's hot and cold abuser (there's a theme here), something of a mega-MAGA North Korea without the careful self-restraint of a Kim, can run and run. Or not. The mid-terms will be something of a barometer.

Firms I work with are not taking a break from the USA, they are reorienting and moving on. If the steady market returns, fair enough, but it isn't anything to necessarily expect.

The outlook for Ukraine with 'this' isn't great.

Today Ukraine marks Constitution Dayβ€”adopted on June 28, 1996.
The Constitution states clearly: Ukraine is a sovereign, independent, democratic state with established borders.

Norway has imposed a new package of sanctions against Russia, aligning with the 17th EU sanctions package, which Norway politically joined on 28 May this year. The sanctions come into force today, 27 June, the Norwegian government said in a statement.
The new measures include the listing of numerous vessels from the so-called β€œshadow fleet,” which Russia uses to circumvent sanctions, particularly those targeting oil.
Several Russian companies and individuals have also been sanctioned for supplying the Russian military-industrial complex with drones, weapons, ammunition, military equipment, critical components, or logistical support.
[...] The 17th EU sanctions package includes 189 shadow fleet vesselsβ€”more than double the previous numberβ€”as well as 17 individuals and 58 legal entities listed for actions that undermine or threaten Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.
An additional 31 legal entities have been added to the export control annex and are now subject to stricter restrictions on the export of certain goods. These entities are identified as military end-users, members of the Russian military-industrial complex, or supporters of the Russian defense and security sector.
Sanctions against Russia are imposed in accordance with Resolution No. 1076 of 15 August 2014, concerning restrictive measures in response to actions that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, independence, and stability of Ukraine.

A covert naval operation that changed the Black Sea's balance of power. This report follows the NOBODY unit β€” a combat group within Timur’s Special Forces of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine β€” as they carry out a daring raid on the Russian-occupied β€œPetro Hodovanets” oil rig.
The story also covers the cruise missile strike on the captured Ukrainian platform β€œUkraina” and the downing of a Russian Su-30 fighter jet during the team’s return.

❗️A KAB (guided aerial bomb) reportedly reached the outskirts of Dnipro β€” monitoring channels say an explosion was heard in the city.
This is likely the first recorded instance during the war of a KAB reaching the city.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bomb was a new model equipped with rocket boosters. According to the monitoring channels, the target covered approximately 110–115 km, with 13 minutes elapsing from launch to impact.
If these extended-range KABs are deployed regularly, they could pose a threat to the outskirts of Poltava, Dnipro (as seen today), Mykolaiv, and Odesa.
Awaiting official confirmation.

The strike was carried out using long-range drones. As a result of the attack, a fire broke out in the airfield’s technical maintenance area β€” a critical part of the military facility where aircraft are prepared for missions, serviced, and repaired

A groundbreaking operation was performed at the Superhumans Center in Lviv β€” doctors transplanted a toe to a soldier’s hand.
After sustaining a severe injury at the front, Nazar lost one arm and the thumb of his remaining hand β€” a crucial digit for gripping. The operation was conducted in collaboration with British colleagues and lasted several hours.
Surgeons had to connect bone, blood vessels, nerves, and tendons to ensure full blood flow, sensitivity, and mobility in the transplanted toe.
One month after surgery, Nazar can already unscrew bottle caps and pick up small objects. Several more months of rehabilitation lie ahead, but doctors believe full restoration of grip function is achievable. t.me/liveukraine_media/32313* *

Just an update re my friend who was in Kharkiv. He has managed to get a medical discharge from military service and will be joining his family this evening in Poland. He will have spent nearly 3.5 years travelling nonstop to the frontlines to support and supply the frontline soldiers which have never been far from Kharkiv. He has lost many friends and has not seen his children more than twice since the war started. Bombs have relentlessly rained down on him and his 90 year old grandparents but they have carried on regardless. It was a bittersweet moment for him as he passed the Polish borders tonight as he feels tremendous guilt that he was eventually allowed to leave whilst many remain.

PerkingFaintly · 28/06/2025 22:26

Flowers for your friend.

And for you too, @Hillsmakeyoustrong .

You've been supporting him as he supports others, and it all takes its toll.

I read that article in the Telegraph. Those numpties have terrible operational security. Now that they've lost the element of surprise, they'll have to bin those plans and come up with something else.

I'm not sure if I get your point in the second paragraph, @notimagain. The journal article didn't draw much in the way of conclusions.

Why is it concerning, Ducks?

The implications to me are that 1) there are a lot of inspections that are an excuse to enforce a bribe and 2) so many of them that for production effectiveness they have to suspend the inspections altogether and 3) inspections happen for a reason, to make sure that what's been produced is what's claimed, at a reasonable quality. Without an external check, it will be easy for mistakes and worse to happen and even flourish.

To me, the fact they're suspending inspections implies that despite efforts the level of corruption is still very high. In fact it's been stated that there's a concern that with the US more or less withdrawing, the motivation to keep fighting against corruption is weakening.

Russia has invested over €1 billion in expanding the Kazan Aviation Plant, which specializes in the production of strategic bombers, Yle reports.
Satellite images obtained by journalists show the construction of new hangars covering approximately 19,000 square meters, with a length of more than 320 meters.
The plant produces Tu-160, Tu-160M2, and Tu-22M3 bombers, which range in length from 40 to 55 meters.
The Kazan Aviation Plant remains the only facility in Russia capable of partially compensating for the loss of strategic aviation resulting from Ukraine’s special operation β€œPavutyna” (β€œSpiderweb”).
Despite the scale of investment, production output remains low. In 2023, the plant delivered only two upgraded Tu-160M and Tu-160M2 aircraft to the Russian Ministry of Defense.
According to expert Marco Eklund, in addition to issues with components and international sanctions, the enterprise is also facing serious personnel shortages.

The American nuclear weapons stationed in Germany are not enough to deter Russia, so Germany must gain access to the nuclear arsenal of France or the United Kingdom, said Jens Spahn, head of the CDU/CSU faction in the Bundestag, in an interview with Welt am Sonntag.
β€œRussian aggression is a completely new threat. Europe must become capable of deterring it.
To achieve this, American atomic bombs are currently stationed in Germany, but in the long term, this is not enough.
We need to discuss Germany’s or Europe’s participation in the nuclear arsenal of France or the UK, as well as the possibility of creating a joint nuclear arsenal with other European countries.
It will be expensive, but those who want protection must also be willing to pay for it.”
Spahn also raised the idea of an β€œindependent European nuclear umbrella,” stressing that it would only work if Germany had access to its management:
β€œAnyone who cannot control nuclear weapons becomes a pawn in world politics. France likely won’t agree to give Germany access to the β€˜nuclear button.’
However, control could rotate randomly between European states, keeping potential adversaries uncertain.”

Merz explained why many Germans find it difficult to see Putin as a threat.
β€œAmong a part of our population, there is a deep-rooted fear of war. I do not share it, but I can understand it. In principle, it is right to seek all paths to peace. However, when it comes to Russia, my point of view is realistic: I am currently rereading a book about British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and his policy of appeasement toward Adolf Hitler. We must not repeat such a mistake,” Merz said.

@DucklingSwimmingInstructress thank you for the cogent analysis behind the headline. It must be so hard to root out corruption. It is hard to believe there are Ukrainians who will seek to profit from war and their countrymen's misery. Money is truly the root of all evil.

Ukraine was appallingly corrupt. Worse than Russia. It's changing places now - on the transparency index (perceptions of corruption, which is not quite the same as actual corruption, admittedly) Russia is sinking down to 154, whereas Ukraine is rising to 104 or similar. Hungary is in the 80's.

However, it's clear that corruption is still a very big issue and there have been reports of extremely high level officials being accused or arrested for corruption. No bad rumours attached to Zelensky himself though (that I've heard), and he does seem to be working hard to attack it.

The US withdrawal is really not helping though.
