Hegseth confirms that the Us is cutting aid to Ukraine.

Their prerogative of course. I do wish though, along with saying how much has been given, they and others would recognise that Ukraine has provided them with a lot of new knowledge.
A price can't be put on that, but it's still credit.

As I noted above, Hegseth doesn't set the budget; Congress does. And at this point, we haven't even seen the Senate version.

I listened to the first episode of The Wargame today, and it did provide very helpful context for the second. I also found this nice background article about the podcast:

https://observer.co.uk/news/politics/article/the-wargame-the-podcast-exploring-how-britain-can-respond-to-russian-attack

I don't know if The Observer is considered reputable or if it's widely read, but I hope the article prompts a lot of Brits to listen to the podcast. It does a great job of making the defense question real and is very timely since the strategic review was recently released.

The Wargame: how would Britain respond to a Russian attack?

It was a nice idea while it lasted.

Britain Gets Unserious Again About Defense Spending - A government β€˜spending review’ shows there’s no chance of reaching 3%, much less 3.5%, of GDP.

But, thank goodness, bus pass discounts, green energy giveaways, and fuel subsidies for wealthy pensioners are safe. This feeds Trump's narrative that Europe is politically incapable of defending itself and gives him all the more reason to step back from NATO.

Perhaps every MP could be made to listen to The Wargame podcast.

The EU Council has finally approved a gradual increase in tariffs on Russian and Belarusian fertilizers, starting July 1.
The tariffs will rise over three years, allowing the EU to completely abandon supplies from Russia by 2028. The goal is to reduce Moscow’s export revenues and limit its ability to finance the war in Ukraine.

πŸ‘€βœˆοΈ After Operation Pavutyna (Spider Web,) Russians Redeploy Strategic Bombers to the Far East
According to OSINT analyst AviVector, Russia has begun dispersing its Tu-160 strategic bombers to more remote airfields β€” Elizovo in Kamchatka, Anadyr in Chukotka, and Borisoglebskoye near Kazan. These aircraft were previously concentrated at the Belaya airbase in the Irkutsk region, where 52 strategic aviation aircraft were stationed before Operation Spider Web.
In addition, Tu-22M3 bombers are being moved eastward. Last week, 11 aircraft from the Olenya airbase were redeployed to the Ukrainka airfield in the Amur region.

At a press conference with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine has entered a phase of the war where financial resources are a key battlefield.
β€œTechnologies are replacing old equipment and old weapons in any case. The β€˜Russians’ are fighting against the imposition of sanctions, because this will limit their finances. We are also fighting for finances, because there is already production, and there is not enough of it,” β€” Zelenskyy stated.
He also confirmed that Ukraine now has a supply plan for the IRIS-T air defense systems.

A recreated version of Alla Horska’s Boryviter mosaic has been unveiled on Independence Square in central Kyiv β€” Suspilne reports.
The artwork was reconstructed by a team of 15 contemporary monumental artists and researchers. It took three months to complete, with every detail carefully reproduced.
To match the original, over 700 kg of materials were collected from across Ukraine and abroad β€” including smalt glass, colored tiles, metal plates, and aluminum spoons. The mosaic was built as a movable structure made of 68 pieces mounted on a metal frame.
For the first time, Boryviter exists not as part of a building façade but as an independent, transportable work of art.
Artist Olena Zaretska, Horska’s granddaughter, said the original mosaic was created in 1967 for the Ukraine restaurant in Mariupol. Horska and her husband, Vasyl Zaretsky, were part of a growing movement in monumental art and were also commissioned to make a second piece, Tree of Life.
β€œThey experimented a lot β€” the use of sheet aluminum and spoons gave the mosaic lightness and shine,” Zaretska explained.
Horska was killed in 1970. The restaurant later closed, and few people saw the mosaic. It was damaged during Russia’s invasion in 2022. Its current condition is unknown.

In May, Russia seized more Ukrainian territory than in almost any other month since the end of 2022, as the Kremlin pushes for a summer offensive aimed at creating the impression in the West that victory is already within its grasp, The Wall Street Journal reports

In Ivano-Frankivsk, Russian operatives attempted to recruit a 15-year-old schoolgirl to carry out a terrorist attack, but the girl reported the approach to Ukrainian security services.
The Russians tried to convince the schoolgirl to build an improvised explosive device and detonate it in the city’s central park. However, she contacted the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) through their chatbot β€œExpose the FSB Agent” in advance, allowing Ukrainian law enforcement to monitor her every step.
This helped prevent the attack and document the entire preparation process β€” from the initial recruitment to the occupiers’ attempt to detonate the girl.

πŸ‡πŸ‡Ί Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n complained about alleged threats from Ukraine and stated that Ukrainians should be grateful to his country.
β€œWe allowed their refugees to leave through Hungary. We granted them access to all public services in Hungary, provided assistance, treated their soldiers, and are educating their children,” he said.
He then suggested that instead of issuing threats and blackmail, the President of Ukraine should thank the Hungarian people and show them respect.

⚑️ Ukrainian air defense forces neutralized 43 aerial targets overnight.
Russia launched 55 drones and 4 ballistic missiles (Iskander-M / KN-23). Air defenses shot down 28 UAVs, while 15 more were lost from radar tracking. The main directions of the attack were Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Strikes were recorded in 9 locations.

There has been some speculation that German missile technicians would have to be present in Ukraine to set it up and operate it. I think that with some training, the Ukrainians are perfectly capable of doing this on their own.

@notimagain any thoughts on how this development will affect the effectiveness of Russia's ability to lob missiles at Ukraine using these planes? The locations seem pretty remote. Would Russia not have to move the maintenance personnel etc there as well. The logistics seem challenging.

notimagain · 13/06/2025 13:37

@blueshoes

It very much complicates matters..it's not just a case if having to shift personnel, it will mean moving specalised ground support.equipment.

Also if they continue to use these aircraft against Ukraine it increases flight times (bad for maintenance) and possibly increases the warnings the Ukraine gets of any attacks.

I read somewhere that the Russians are thought to have only 13 operational Tu-160 Blackjacks. Since that's their best strategic bomber, I doubt they'd use them for conventional attacks against Ukraine. Quite a few are now in Siberia, a few hundred miles from Alaska. I'll have a nosy around and see if there is any chatter that we're reinforcing Eielson Air Force Base in response.

Well done.

I do hope Iran doesn't attack any of the US forces in the region in response to the Israeli attacks. Getting drawn in would be a strategic distraction and a drain on scarce resources. I don't think Iran will do so. They have their hands full dealing with Israel now, and in the past, when US and Iranian forces have fought, it's ended badly for the Iranians.

The European Union has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 2027, said Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration.

The number of those who support the bill on β€œdevastating sanctions” against Russia is growing in the US Congress, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said.
β€œWe have been working with the White House since day one to put this package together. We now have more than 84 co-sponsors in the Senate and 70 co-sponsors in the House of Representatives on a bill to impose severe sanctions and tariffs on Russia and its financial backers,” Graham wrote in a column for Fox News.
He added that the goal of this bill is to β€œbreak the vicious cycle in which China, a communist dictatorship, buys oil at below-market prices from Putin’s Russia, which gives his war machine the opportunity to kill innocent Ukrainian civilians.”
β€œChina is watching the determination of the United States regarding Putin’s efforts to destroy Ukraine and, possibly, other sovereign states. My goal is not to humiliate Russia, but to make sure that China sees the outcome of this conflict and understands that its attempts to seize Taiwan by force are not in the interests of the People’s Republic,” the senator emphasized.

β€œOn Monday, a big battle will take place in Luxembourg, because on the agenda of the Council of Energy Ministers is the proposal of von der Leyen–Zelenskyy, with which they want to force us to stop buying natural gas, oil and nuclear fuel from Russia.

We are not ready to replace our existing energy sources with more expensive and less reliable ones for the sake of Brussels or Kyiv!”, SzijjΓ‘rtΓ³ wrote.

Together, we've successfully closed 4 drone fundraisers to fight off russian invaders.
This time, let's fundraise an air defense turret to protect Ukrainians from terrorist UAVs SkySentinel is an advanced air defense turret, designed by Ukrainian engineers specifically to make Swiss cheese out of russian drones and missiles with high precision.
Our goal is $150k β€” to protect the people of Ukraine and to get rid of terrorist garbage in its skies.
We shall raffle off unique prizes among everyone who donates $5 or more:
πŸ¦‡10 unique UNITED24 x NAFO T-shirts with the #DarkNight logo
πŸͺ™One of the last custom UNITED24 challenge coins from our donors, Monty and Barnett
And those who donate $1000 or more will join the NAFO Guard, we'll make a video with their Fella avatar next to the #SkySentinel, and write their name on the actual turret!
Let’s shoot up some russian drones and missiles, before they do any harm. Let's guard Ukrainian nights: https://u24.gov.ua/nafo-dark-night?utm_source=telegram&utm_medium=media&utm_campaign=part-five

What’s happening in the Middle East is horrendous, I really do worry though that we’ll see interest in Ukraine drop off a cliff edge πŸ˜” I think it’s telling that 100 drones towards Israel is headline news when nearly 500 at Ukraine daily doesn’t even make the news any more. Shows how desensitised we all are to the suffering of the Ukrainians.
