Why would you 'accuse' someone of being homosexual? Even for a devout Catholic it's not a crime to be gay (they just say it's a sin to act on it).

Realistically, priests must surely all be gay or asexual. Otherwise, why would they do the job?

It’s not a problem to be a homosexual priest.

It’s a problem if a priest acts on his homosexual desires and lives that lifestyle (because they take a vow of celibacy).

It’s a BIG problem if that priest uses his power and position to sexually groom and abuse young boys and men that he interacts with.

An American - first American pope

First North American.

Pope Francis was Argentinian. Which is in South America.

Gunnersforthecup · 08/05/2025 21:15

"Some cardinals have also expressed their view that in 2025, no prelate who has been a diocesan bishop is exempt from criticism over his handling of abuse cases, and some have raised concern about the prospect that information about Prevost is being weaponized by his perceived ideological enemies.

Indeed, it is likely the case that in the run-up to the conclave, some media outlets are highlighting charges of negligence or cover-up connected to ideological opponents, and downplaying allegations of perceived allies."

From this https://www.pillarcatholic.com/p/why-prevosts-papal-prospects-prompt.

I think the best thing at the moment is to keep an open mind and see what evidence/ facts emerge.

DrPrunesqualer · 08/05/2025 21:16

A little bit from the bbc on Pope Leo’s works before today.

New Pope
DrPrunesqualer · 08/05/2025 21:17

Hoping because he’s more a man of the people and used to being out and about amongst others he won’t suffer as Pope Benedict did.

TomPinch · 08/05/2025 21:17

I hope he really is the best man. Do we really need yet another American in a position of power?

Yes, the Catholic Church has quietly ordained married priests for some time; they would be converts from Anglicanism or some other denomination who were already married and ordained in a different denomination. I also think that some of the Eastern rite churches that are in communion with Rome allow priests to be married.

Yes, the Greek Catholics can have children and be married as long as they are wed before they are ordained, and are encouraged to do so.

Kind, but somewhat bumbling.

I don’t agree with that! He obviously aged quite considerably and suddenly, and he seemed very different in the last years, presumably due to his illness/ medication, but I don’t think of him as bumbling. Quite the opposite really.
Each to their own though!

ERthree · 08/05/2025 21:22

Glad Conclave wasn't a long drawn out affair but i really didn't think it would be so quick. Pope Leo reminds me very much of Pope John Paul II. As a citizen of Peru he will at least, i hope have Paddington Bears support.

DrPrunesqualer · 08/05/2025 21:16

A little bit from the bbc on Pope Leo’s works before today.

This is interesting, thank you @DrPrunesqualer. He seems to have done a lot of good, but I'm waiting to see what comes of the allegations.

On a lighter and entirely unrelated note, that green he's wearing here is exactly the shade I've been looking for to do my living room walls.

Eyesopenwideawake · 08/05/2025 20:30

Is it weird that I find him very good-looking? 😳

It’s a bit left-field.

But I suppose why not? He looks very kind.

Pleasantsort · 08/05/2025 21:24

Gwenhwyfar · 08/05/2025 19:54

They already have married priests - converted Anglicans, but still.

@Gwenhwyfar We were married in the Catholic Church by a married deacon.

CoffeeCoffeeTea · 08/05/2025 21:24

An interesting choice, I guess they want someone with a strong American background, to get the catholic/Spanish /Italian /Irish/South American vote.interesting times

ARainyNightInSoho · 08/05/2025 21:25

@DrPrunesqualer the are many, many ways of devoting your life to God. But, if you choose to be a Catholic priest it is very likely you are gay or asexual. I don't know why that fact bothers you. It's not a crime to be either of those things. Even Catholics claim it's not a sin to be gay. You just can't act on it. It seems to me that if you believe Catholic priests are all straight men who have 'overcome' their human nature then you have an extremely rudimentary understanding of psychology.

I don’t think they are really comparable

Westfacing · 08/05/2025 18:34

Blimey - you know you're old when you're older than the Pope!

I've just said exactly the same thing! 😆😱

Calliopespa · 08/05/2025 21:24

He's only 8yrs older than me but wears nicer frocks...

Westfacing · 08/05/2025 21:44

He seems to be a liberal - Trump won't like him.

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/05/2025 21:50

The question really is will he like Trump? He does after all have many many more supporters.

I imagine what "bothers" people is that it's odd that you assume no heterosexual people would choose to be celibate, but a lot of gay people would. It's no easier for gay people to "overcome their human nature" than it is for straight men.

A Deacon is not a priest. A Deacon cannot say mass AFAIK.

HRTQueen · 08/05/2025 22:00

His job shall really be more than anything keeping the Vatican afloat

financially they are in serious trouble

Keeping the Vatican powerful (which means wealth) is far far more important than progression

he won’t be rocking the boat, he won’t be radical, he won’t be overly challenging any world leader that could be financially helpful

He certainly will not be going up against Trump who once again showed how powerful he is at Pope Francis funeral

not wanting this to be true doesn’t change the situation the world is in at present

Agree
it doesn’t bother me SoHo
What makes you think that.
All sorts of people can chose to give their life in the service of God and their church
All sorts equally can chose not to want sex. Let’s face it, we hear it all the time here on mumsnet.

For those with a devotion to God it’s probably a lot easier, they have a higher power that can fulfil their lives above and beyond mere carnal desires.
