A Deacon is not a priest. A Deacon cannot say mass AFAIK.

The church also has women Deacons

EdithBond · 08/05/2025 22:05

Gunnersforthecup · 08/05/2025 19:57

I think that, given human nature and the widespread issue with sexual abuse in the church, it would be extremely difficult to find a bishop or cardinal who had not had some sort of oversight, perhaps tangential, of a priest or church employee of some sort, who had misbehaved in this way, in the previous several decades.

I also think it is very difficult to manage these matters in such a way that the victims would feel satisfied.

And, very often, the complaints that hit the media necessarily give one perspective of what happened.

Hopefully, the cardinals will have had access to detailed reports about these matters, prior to the appointment.

But if it appears that there has been gross mishandling, then I imagine we will hear more in the media.

It’s not the fact he had oversight of a priest accused of abuse. The question is how he dealt with complaints.

One of the two SNAP allegations (linked above) is that, as recently as 2022, he:

  • failed to open an investigation in response to complaints from three victims of child abuse;
  • sent inadequate information to Rome; and
  • allowed the accused priest to continue saying mass.

Consequently, the complainants reported the alleged crime to the civil authorities.

Pretty serious allegations relating to the very recent past, when there was no excuse for not dealing swiftly with complaints.

i am interested in how the Vatican operates

it’s been news for some time (not conspiracy theories) about the Vatican’s financial issues

its wishful thinking the Pope will become political when they really are not in a position to be

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/05/2025 21:22

This is interesting, thank you @DrPrunesqualer. He seems to have done a lot of good, but I'm waiting to see what comes of the allegations.

On a lighter and entirely unrelated note, that green he's wearing here is exactly the shade I've been looking for to do my living room walls.

That’s a standard green worn throughout the year in Ordinary Time.
Im sure if you pop into any Catholic Church after service you could get an up close photo to colour match at B&Q.
it represents Hope, life, spirit Resurrection….that sort of thing

Edited

I didn't know this! I'm not a Catholic (despite my complete fascination with the new pope being appointed!)

I love the colour even more knowing the symbolism behind it. I won't ask B&Q to colour match the Pope 😂 I'll take a less conspicuous photo in to get them to do a sample.

I'm quite a hippy so I love nature and being surrounded by greens and wood etc - something with a spiritual symbolism is just a lovely idea. I don't suppose it matters that I'm not Catholic if I like the idea of embracing all that the colour represents.

Sorry for the derail - thank you @DrPrunesqualer 💐

He certainly will not be going up against Trump who once again showed how powerful he is at Pope Francis funeral

What do you mean @HRTQueen? How did Trump show how powerful he is?Confused

Damnloginpopup · 08/05/2025 22:51

How many divisions does the pope have?

chisanunian · 08/05/2025 22:57

IcedPurple · 08/05/2025 19:26

But America has always wanted, and largely got, global domination. Trump is just more obviously obnoxious about it and is in office in a time of American decline.

It's not the job of the Pontiff and Bishop of Rome to get involved in American politics. Not everything is about Trump and America.

I can see I'm wasting my time on this thread.

EasternStandard · 08/05/2025 18:58

Yes he’s not a politician.

He is a head of state, though. Politics may not be overt but the role is political by its very nature. I like the look and sound of him, I have faith that the cardinals who know him best have made the wisest choice for this time.

How many divisions does the Soviet Union have?

Bob Pope.

The Orange One is going to feel a bit put out that another American is now more important than he is.

It is kick in the teeth for him.Especially after that photo of him in Papal vestments went viral.
A very indignant lady in church ( I am catholic), as voicing her disgust at it to me the other day

Slightly off topic but I've Googled job vacancies at the Vatican.

How many divisions does the pope have?

Well, you've got your Premiership in a red strip, your First Division in mostly purple, your Second Division in black, the Vauxhall Conference league normally wears black trousers and a white shirt when attending Seminary fixtures and the ref tends to stick to white with the occasional red on match days.

I need you as my interior designer. Please.

mathanxiety · 09/05/2025 01:23

@TY78910
Your gran was overdoing it, methinks. The wearing of black, etc is more of a cultural thing than a requirement.

I'm RC and my parish did first communions for the last few weekends, beginning immediately after Pope Francis died. There was gold and white bunting at the church doors and the church was beautifully decorated with flowers.

No, your insinuations here are hate filled.

HRTQueen · 08/05/2025 22:00

His job shall really be more than anything keeping the Vatican afloat

financially they are in serious trouble

Keeping the Vatican powerful (which means wealth) is far far more important than progression

he won’t be rocking the boat, he won’t be radical, he won’t be overly challenging any world leader that could be financially helpful

He certainly will not be going up against Trump who once again showed how powerful he is at Pope Francis funeral

not wanting this to be true doesn’t change the situation the world is in at present

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

trump is an addled, demented puppet. Arude, convicted criminal vulgarian, a grifter, rapist, racist with an enormous trail of business, ethical and personal failures.

his current role is a reflection of the ignorance and bigotry of Americans, not of that disgusting scum himself.

he could not even stay awake at Francis’ funeral.

For corruption hiding behind religion that takes advantage of peoples faith - hate is not what I feel but disappointment and anger that this happens absolutely

TomPinch · 09/05/2025 01:55

The only thing I would disagree with your comments about Trump is him being a puppet. Muppet yes, a puppet no or an often out of control one

it’s not an endorsement of Trump I was making

like I said previously not liking him doesn’t take away the fact of his power and chaos he is causing

Eyesopenwideawake · 09/05/2025 09:52

He seems like a good choice.

Pity it's all a load of bollocks though, isn't it?

Irish here too and I can’t imagine a wake without alcohol and a knees up.

Catholics love partying, colour, music. Ass7me you’ve seen the inside of a Catholic Church….ablaze with sparkle and colour. It was the hardline Protestants ( Puritans, Calvinist’s etc ) that put a stop to all the fun stuff.
No idea why some Catholics would do differently but I’m guessing different countries might do things differently

When I first went to Spain, almost ALL the very old ladies wore black all the time. So basically if your husband died when you were 60, you could be dressed in black every day for another forty years. At least, I understood that it was for life. This was twenty years ago and of course younger people didn't follow those customs in the same way.
