I felt like that at first too @SpidersAreShitheads but he seems pretty good.

I need to read more about him but I liked his speech.

Very glad he’s more of a moderate candidate although not as progressive as I would have probably preferred.

He has a kind face which weirdly also feels important to me 😂🤷‍♀️

First impressions are good. I imagine Stanley Tucci will be asked to lay him in any future movies

Isn't he celibate?

Ankleblisters · 08/05/2025 18:48

White smoke
New Pope
Cat'lics have new hope
Fingers crossed he's no joke
Fingers crossed he's got scope
Cardinals will not mope
If he is a good bloke

White smoke
New Pope
"Habemus Papam!" we croke
Says no to a good grope
Isn't keen to elope
He's going to walk a tightrope
Trying not to provoke

White smoke
New Pope
Leo of the Good Folk
Hope he doesn't smoke dope
Hope he doesn't snort coke
Then we'd have to say nope!
The Faithful they would not cope

White smoke
New Pope
Will he say he's 'anti-woke'?
Soul as clean as new soap
Heart as rich as egg yolk
Jesus he will invoke
The Son of God that 'we' broke.

ShowDownTime · 08/05/2025 18:49

Habemus Papam! Love it, watched it with my children so they have a sense of these things being of huge cultural significance. They said he looked nice. I thought he held himself well but was clearly controlling his emotions with the little arm movements. None of us can imagine the feeling.

A global pope.

Mischance · 08/05/2025 18:49

His first task must be to root out all the paedophile priests worldwide and dismantle the system that covers up for them. He must have a no tolerance policy and make it very public.

Charmeleon33 · 08/05/2025 18:49

I like that alongside his robes he appears to be wearing his Apple Watch (front of BBC app)

IcedPurple · 08/05/2025 18:47

I was thinking the same.

He has a kind face, just like Pope Francis.

I'll admit that his Americanness rankles with me a tad, although apparently he's also a citizen of Peru. Interesting that he gave his speech entirely in Italian, with a bit of Latin at the end.

He's not just pope, he's now bishop of Rome, hence the Italian.

ThisLovingTiger · 08/05/2025 18:50

He has a lovely face indeed. His life is now changed forever, head of 1.2 billion Catholics, a world figure, until death, what a commitment.

Goneback2school · 08/05/2025 18:50

Apparently he uses social media and has gone up against JD Vance in an argument about immigration.

TY78910 · 08/05/2025 18:50

I also realise I meant Francis not Benedict. Brain not all there today!

He seemed to be struggling to hold back tears.

Imagine it. Just this morning he could have sipped his espresso in any cafe in Rome and nobody would have had a clue who he is. Now he's going to be one of the most famous people in the world and leader of the church he's devoted his life to.

Of course. But apparently he is multilingual so I thought he might throw in a few phrases in other languages. Interestingly he did give a short part of his speech in Spanish, but nothing in English at all.

Italian is the language of The Vatican these days. Apparently all the Cardinals are expected to converse in Italian.

The Orange One is going to feel a bit put out that another American is now more important than he is.

That made me laugh.

Gundogday · 08/05/2025 18:53

I’ll be honest and just had to look up ‘Habemus Papam’. It means ‘we have a new pope’.

chisanunian · 08/05/2025 18:53

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/05/2025 18:37

I am actually a bit disappointed to have an American as pope, primarily because of how poorly Trump and his government are behaving.

Normally I wouldn’t mind but right now it feels like a horrible decision. Some commentator said it’s the US leading the world culturally, politically, economically, and now spiritually 😕

I do wonder if Trump will somehow try to claim that this appointment is somehow a reflection of how great everyone thinks he and America are.

The only good thing is that he’s not an ultra-conservative - he’s been described as a moderate although he’s still apparently opposed to women in the Catholic Church.

I think it's a shrewd move by the Cardinals, actually.

There is now another American who is in the unique position of being able to actually do something about Trump.

MsJinks · 08/05/2025 18:56

I posted on another thread that apparently a US pope was not usually considered due to concern of concentrating power too much in the US - however he is also a Peruvian citizen and apparently his parents were French/Italian so it's considered ok.
Personally I think they also realised the pope and trump would not align on anything where power could sway anything!

But it's not the job of the head of the Catholic Church to 'do something' about a politician who'll be gone in a few years.

He's there to lead the 'flock', not get involved in the politics of his home land.

SpottedDonkey · 08/05/2025 18:57

I’m surprised he didn’t speak in English, as a native speaker of the world’s lingua franca. A missed opportunity to communicate his message as widely as possible.

Yes he’s not a politician.

I'm kind of glad he didn't. It's refreshing to see that not absolutely everything is dominated by English. His speech will have been translated instantly anyway.

HRTQueen · 08/05/2025 18:59

An outsider

a questionable donation of millions of dollars from Trump and we suddenly have the first American pope

The Vatican is so corrupt

I felt he was very much aligning himself with his flock in Peru, after all he left America 40 odd years ago.

I agree that he has a kind face, and have the same feelings I had about Francis.

I wonder why it takes so long to bring him out.

Writing the press release, updating Wikipedia ready to press go, getting him dressed, probably takes him ages to get out of the Sistine Chapel as all the others will want a blessing from him, posing for the photo...
I think it's quite a way from there to the balcony too.
