I felt he was very much aligning himself with his flock in Peru, after all he left America 40 odd years ago.

I agree that he has a kind face, and have the same feelings I had about Francis.

Yes, he holds Peruvian citizenship, so it's kind of two South American popes in a row.

Scottishgirl85 · 08/05/2025 19:06

I'm an atheist, so don't follow any of this. But I can't get my head round why, in the year 2025, the pope can't be female. Why do catholics accept that?

Duvetdweller · 08/05/2025 19:07

I wonder if there was screaming in the Sistine Chapel?

Apparently he uses social media and has gone up against JD Vance in an argument about immigration.

DP just found his Twitter account.

I feel quite cheered thinking that the new pope has been willing to speak out against the US government on what he feels are matters of humanity.

I know the pope isn’t political but his willingness to speak out will matter and will sway some public opinion.

Goodness knows there needs to be some compassionate voices heard in the US right now.

Catholic Mumsnetters! I have a question!
my grandma is a very devoted catholic and she has always been very strict in her bereavement - only wore black, no music, no entertainment for at least a month after the passing of a close family member. Is this the done thing, or just something she’s observed? As with that in mind, does it look a little insensitive to Benedict to congregate and celebrate in such excitable manner? Genuine question by the way as I’m curious!

I think they've probably got over the death of the Pope before last by now, tbh. And they only took three days for Jesus Himself.

I suspect many of the people congregating in the square are not Catholic or haven't been inside a church of any denomination in years! Hence the celebrations. However, while you might think it would be nice to be a little more subdued out of respect to the recent death of the previous Pope, it's also a huge occasion and celebration of a new Pontiff - bit like VE Day was both sad and joyful.

As for your Grandma, it was very common in her generation to observe mourning more strictly - my Mum for instance didn't send Christmas cards in the year that my Dad died and that was a very commonly-observed custom, but I don't think anyone really pays any attention to those traditions nowadays.

Very disappointed that they chose a key member of the Lavender Mafia, but not surprised.

  • In 2013, Pope Francis was elected within two days - the cardinals needed five rounds of voting to elect him;
  • In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI was elected in two days after four votes;
  • In October 1978, Pope John Paul II was chosen after eight rounds of voting across three days;

These all seem reasonably short so why do I have a memory of a conclave taking days and days and days? Am I confusing it with a Dan Brown film?

Time seems to run faster the older we get.… maybe that’s why.

Given we can't even have female Catholic priests (yet?), I think we are generations away from a female Pope!

Because the pope has to be an ordained priest in the first instance. And females cannot be priests.

Because that’s the way it has always been since Jesus himself chose 12 men to be his disciples 2000 years ago. The church isn’t interested in what it regards as passing secular fads like equality, female emancipation, reproductive rights etc etc. 🙄

Brainwashed from birth! And I say that as someone brought up Catholic

That would be a seriously dated view! Maybe some people still observe it but even when my grandmother died in her late 70s back in 1976 her 90 yr old brother told us kids to turn on the tv if we wanted to when we got in from the funeral. In fairness my mother would have left it switched off at least on the day of the funeral but no longer. Always remember it as we found the day miserable obviously and it was great to get the tv back on!

It probably varies by country too but I notice these days people turn up to funerals dressed in anything and even the chief mourners don't always wear black, I didn't wear black at my mothers funeral in 1983 or at my fathers 8 yrs ago, traditional catholic funerals.

I think of him as an American born Peruvian, and hope he can continue the social teaching of Pope Francis.

And if he really has been prepared to argue with JD Vance, that's a good thing.

But it's not the job of the head of the Catholic Church to 'do something' about a politician who'll be gone in a few years.

He's there to lead the 'flock', not get involved in the politics of his home land.

Perhaps I didn't explain very well. Trump doesn't just have sights on running his own country, does he? He wants global domination, both him and his lackey, whose name I conveniently forget. They want to run the show. A steadying hand from another direction is sorely needed, and I couldn't see anyone else in the world with enough clout to be able to do it. Until today.

Excerpt from: www.lewrockwell.com/2025/05/no_author/the-new-pope-must-purge-the-church-of-the-lavender-mafia/

It is impossible to estimate how many of the cardinals participating in the conclave have either been accused of being active homosexuals or of covering up for homosexuals. SNAP (The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) submitted to Cardinal Parolin a list of six of the papabile cardinals who have “either enabled or concealed sexual abuse committed by Catholic Clergy”: Péter Erdő from Hungary, Kevin Farrell from the United States, Victor Manuel Fernández from Argentina, Mario Grech from Malta, Robert Francis Prevost from the United States, and Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines. A rainbow cloud hangs over the heads of the cardinals from the United States, either for their own suspected homosexual activities or for cover-up of abusive homosexual priests.

Because the pope has to be an ordained priest in the first instance. And females cannot be priests.

Technically speaking, the Pope only has to be a male Catholic. All Pope’s for the last 600-odd years have been chosen from the pool of Cardinals, but according to Canon Law it’s not actually a requirement.

The Orange One is going to feel a bit put out that another American is now more important than he is.

Surely nobody is more important than the OO!

McSteamyorMcdreamy · 08/05/2025 19:23

Waiting for Trump to come out and say it's divine intervention that an American Pope should be selected whilst he's in power.

Could swear. Wont as not the right place!!!
