Yeah, was fast. I have known times when it's been 2-3 weeks.

Odd timing announcing it on the 80th anniversary of VE Day though. They could have waited til tomorrow! 😬

Also, I don't understand this 'why not a female Pope?' thing. Why don't we have male nuns? We just don't. I don't want a female Pope! I am liking Pope Leo XIV so far. He has a kind face. Smile

Disappointing to read that this one's also been implicated in the hiding of abuse against minors - though given the Vatican's obsessive secrecy it's hard to avoid wondering how easy it would have been to find someone who wasn't

Why Prevost's papal prospects prompt pushback

As high-profile cardinals urge votes for Prevost, some abuse advocates raise concern

I think of him as an American born Peruvian, and hope he can continue the social teaching of Pope Francis.

And if he really has been prepared to argue with JD Vance, that's a good thing.

A hyphen would help with clarity. American-born Peruvian.

Perhaps I didn't explain very well. Trump doesn't just have sights on running his own country, does he? He wants global domination, both him and his lackey, whose name I conveniently forget. They want to run the show. A steadying hand from another direction is sorely needed, and I couldn't see anyone else in the world with enough clout to be able to do it. Until today.

But America has always wanted, and largely got, global domination. Trump is just more obviously obnoxious about it and is in office in a time of American decline.

It's not the job of the Pontiff and Bishop of Rome to get involved in American politics. Not everything is about Trump and America.

Very disappointed that they chose a key member of the Lavender Mafia, but not surprised.

What does this mean?

Toddlerteaplease · 08/05/2025 19:28

Was not expecting that. Disappointed it’s not Tagle

An outsider

a questionable donation of millions of dollars from Trump and we suddenly have the first American pope

The Vatican is so corrupt

Don't be ridiculous.

CountryMouse22 · 08/05/2025 19:26

What does this mean?

See my prior post.

He’s one of 6 cardinals named by a survivor’s group for covering up or being involved in sexual abuse.

Can’t believe they had the brass neck to select him when this is widely known.

Catholic Mumsnetters! I have a question!
my grandma is a very devoted catholic and she has always been very strict in her bereavement - only wore black, no music, no entertainment for at least a month after the passing of a close family member. Is this the done thing, or just something she’s observed? As with that in mind, does it look a little insensitive to Benedict to congregate and celebrate in such excitable manner? Genuine question by the way as I’m curious!

To Benedict? Are they all supposed to still be in mourning for the last but one pope lol?

I am actually a bit disappointed to have an American as pope, primarily because of how poorly Trump and his government are behaving.

Normally I wouldn’t mind but right now it feels like a horrible decision. Some commentator said it’s the US leading the world culturally, politically, economically, and now spiritually 😕

I do wonder if Trump will somehow try to claim that this appointment is somehow a reflection of how great everyone thinks he and America are.

The only good thing is that he’s not an ultra-conservative - he’s been described as a moderate although he’s still apparently opposed to women in the Catholic Church.

" he’s still apparently opposed to women in the Catholic Church."

Prevost was involved with Francis in giving 3 women a role in the selection of bishops, which was criticised by more conservative clergy.

There are gradations of opinion in these areas.

Prevost is a moderate.

stickygotstuck · 08/05/2025 19:32

Odd that some PPs seem to forget that women priests are a relatively new phenomenon in the C of E, which faced huge opposition from within. And female bishops even more so. Not to mention the internal fight over openly gay clerics which still goes on.

FWIW, the late pope Francis supported the move towards women priests. It's likely that the new one may as well.

2000 year old institutions can be slow to change. But change they must. And they do.

Gwenhwyfar · 08/05/2025 19:33

"Also, I don't understand this 'why not a female Pope?' thing. Why don't we have male nuns? "

What an odd thing to write?
We do have male nuns, they are called monks.
The point is that there is no female equivalent of a priest, bishop, cardinal or pope.

So what? Two wrongs don't make a right...

Yes, I posted a similar link myself but from a different source, @PluckyCheeks

And sadly I can believe it only too well, when personal experience in my own area suggests that even now abuse is something to be swept aside rather than addressed

Blimey - you know you're old when you're older than the Pope!

Exactly what I thought!

He's only a couple of weeks younger than me, but still...

RitaIncognita · 08/05/2025 19:40

There was a nine day official mourning period for Pope Francis. No idea about Benedict.

Gunnersforthecup · 08/05/2025 19:41

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 08/05/2025 19:09

Time seems to run faster the older we get.… maybe that’s why.

The longest papal election in history took about 6 months. That was a big outlier, though.

Recent ones have taken 1-3 days, so this is par for the course with the last few decades.

JeremyVineyard · 08/05/2025 19:42

Yay, someone to drive the Pope mobile!

Are you talking about the conclave taking 2-3 weeks?

Because they definitely don't. Since 1914, there's only been one vote that took 5 days, the rest were shorter. Since 1963, they've all been three days or less. No conclave has taken 2-3 weeks to decide.

Apologies if I've misunderstood your post.

I'm an atheist, so don't follow any of this. But I can't get my head round why, in the year 2025, the pope can't be female. Why do catholics accept that?

I’ve a friend who is a Catholic priest, he reckons there will be married priests before the Catholic Church gets anywhere near accepting women priests. He says the Church has uttterly backed itself into a corner over it all.
In fact he has a lot to say about the church and not all flattering. He will never be Pope if he keeps that up …as I keep telling him. 😂

Amazed my Latin was up to translating that! Has spent a lot of time in Peru in a poor district. Augustinian Friar.

Yes but I nearly had a thrombie when I heard him say ' Roberto...' coz I thought it was going to be ultra conservative Robert Sara....
