Loving him already! 😊

Blimey - you know you're old when you're older than the Pope!

that is what i said to DH!

SoNotaRealHousewife · 08/05/2025 18:36

I do wish he had came out in the style of John Wayne though

I wonder if the orange one will approve because he's American and just shows how they're the best!

I am actually a bit disappointed to have an American as pope, primarily because of how poorly Trump and his government are behaving.

Normally I wouldn’t mind but right now it feels like a horrible decision. Some commentator said it’s the US leading the world culturally, politically, economically, and now spiritually 😕

I do wonder if Trump will somehow try to claim that this appointment is somehow a reflection of how great everyone thinks he and America are.

The only good thing is that he’s not an ultra-conservative - he’s been described as a moderate although he’s still apparently opposed to women in the Catholic Church.

Tomatotater · 08/05/2025 18:37

I wonder what its like in America now? They must be losing their minds! Even though he left many years ago!

JonHammsHam · 08/05/2025 18:38
  • In 2013, Pope Francis was elected within two days - the cardinals needed five rounds of voting to elect him;
  • In 2005, Pope Benedict XVI was elected in two days after four votes;
  • In October 1978, Pope John Paul II was chosen after eight rounds of voting across three days;

These all seem reasonably short so why do I have a memory of a conclave taking days and days and days? Am I confusing it with a Dan Brown film?

IBelieveinSomething · 08/05/2025 18:38

Flamingpantoufles · 08/05/2025 17:55

I was thinking that. And also thinking how it must be massively overwhelming and go in a flash for whoever is to be the pope.

Anyone watched Conclave?

I watched conclave and absolutely loved it. I won’t say anything more apart from i hope life imitates art!!

ChessorBuckaroo · 08/05/2025 18:39

Liked that he was emotional as he was presented in front of St Peter's.

Very much in the mould of Francis by all accounts.

Letsgodancing · 08/05/2025 18:39

I Did not think it would be an American but I just looked up his wiki and he does have some great credentials for the role, he is still only in his 60s so this could be the last conclave now for a few decades. It does say he is American / Peruvian which could be very interesting in diplomacy especially with USA and South/Central American issues at the moment.

ChristmasStars · 08/05/2025 18:39

I felt like that at first too @SpidersAreShitheads but he seems pretty good.

Hes 69 and will be there for life ( unless he retires). He'll see off Donald Trump by some way. He is also the antithesis of Trump. Someone who has travelled, is educated, a mathematician and someone who has dedicated his life to helping others. Trump wont be happy for long!

Goodgrashus · 08/05/2025 18:40

First impressions are good. I imagine Stanley Tucci will be asked to lay him in any future movies

Calliopespa · 08/05/2025 18:40

I hadn’t expected this decision; I really hadn’t heard much about him.

But the swift decision suggests the Conclave didn’t find it a hard one.

Habemus Papam!

MaryGreenhill · 08/05/2025 18:41

He looks lovely, l like him already. Also, Conclave is an excellent film we all liked it .

evtheria · 08/05/2025 18:42

I reluctantly await to hear how Trump will take credit for this.

EasternStandard · 08/05/2025 18:42

He does look lovely, I’m pleased for him. What an honour.

Really nice to see the ceremony of it all

I absolutely love the Latin announcement.

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum
Habemus papam

No language has as much gravitas as Latin.

An American pope is going to take a bit of getting used to however. And Pope Francis is going to be a very tough act to follow.

Cognacsoft · 08/05/2025 18:44

He looks a kind soul.

Dh reckons there'll be a 10% tariff on the offerings. 😀

TY78910 · 08/05/2025 18:45

Catholic Mumsnetters! I have a question!
my grandma is a very devoted catholic and she has always been very strict in her bereavement - only wore black, no music, no entertainment for at least a month after the passing of a close family member. Is this the done thing, or just something she’s observed? As with that in mind, does it look a little insensitive to Benedict to congregate and celebrate in such excitable manner? Genuine question by the way as I’m curious!

I don’t know a lot about him but from the little I’ve read, he seems to have great credentials. I also really liked his speech.

I guess I just think there are so many other countries that will never get a voice, it would have been interesting to have that kind of diversity represented on the world stage. There seemed to be some really outstanding progressive candidates from countries - I would have loved to see one of them.

Of course though, you’re right. The most important thing is that the pope is willing to champion the important things, and this new pope certainly seems to have actively done that with his work in poverty etc.

You're confusing Pope Idol with Pop Idol.

Lavenderandbrown · 08/05/2025 18:47

God bless Pope Leo. A historical choice and he's so cute! He looks humbled and happy

Dreichweather · 08/05/2025 18:47

BBC reported he was linked with covering up sexual abuse scandal but I don’t think anything was proven.

I was thinking the same.

He has a kind face, just like Pope Francis.

I'll admit that his Americanness rankles with me a tad, although apparently he's also a citizen of Peru. Interesting that he gave his speech entirely in Italian, with a bit of Latin at the end.
