Who is going to be the next Pope

The Conclave starts today. I'm quite interested to see who will be the successor to Francis.

Seems Cardinal Parolin is the favourite. He's Italian. I hope its not him. Very conventional knows the ropes. Bit of a boring choice.

Cardinal Tagle from the Philippines. Now that would be a lot more interesting. There is a huge Catholic population there. He's second favourite.

Then Cardinal Turkson from Ghana I think. Now that will be really interesting. I think a good thing.

Then Cardinal Zuppi another Italian. Again boring. We need somebody to make a mark but maybe not too big a one.

Anyone got an opinion on this.

It would have been interesting to see an Asian or African pope but most of the candidates are less well known and relatively new cardinals.

Prevost was only made a cardinal in 2023 according to one of the news websites

Yes but he was an Archbishop (I think) in Peru and has been a senior figure knocking around the Vatican for a long time. He would have had a lot of face recognition which the newer Asian/African cardinals lack.
Also a lot of the African representatives are very conservative and its plain that isn’t what the Conclave wanted.

Any media outlet correct in their prediction ?

I wanted Pierbatista Pizzaballa (such an 'Italian Brainrot' name) or Zuppi, but never mind.

I go to a meeting and come back having missed the smoke.

At least we have a good American to counteract the bad one on the world stage.

For those who've enjoyed the Catholic pomp and ceremony, the Pope's inauguration should take place in about a week or so.

I have a weird and stupid question. When he came out Pope Leo XIV was wearing his papal ring. Does the Vatican have lots in different sizes or are there jewellers ready and waiting to make one in the correct size within an hour?

I don't know the answer about the ring, but I did read that they have several sizes of papal robes ready to suit any candidate. Would stand to reason it's the same with the ring.

I missed the smoke moment and announcement as I'd gone out to eat. But will catch up and watch the news channel back later. It's true that it's never who you expect!

I know they have a range of outfits in various sizes on standby but I think that may be his episcopal ring (bishop) and that he gets the papal ring at the inauguration.

Apparently pope Francis chose a ring from a tray of rings no.idea if this was poetic licence or not .

Yes I think I read that when pope Francis was chosen they had an array of Pope garments from him to choose from
I guess they have to make do.on the first official balcony outing and choose the ones which fit best
I would assume they are then tailor from then on.

Can I ask what you won?

I got in about an hour ago. I swore I wasn’t going to go this evening if there was white smoke but decided to in the end - when in Rome etc! I got out of the metro just after 7 and people began to announce it as the crowd was moving towards St. Peter’s. Fantastic atmosphere. I got surprisingly very close to the square but couldn’t see the balcony, though was able to watch from one of the big screens erected for Francis’ funeral.

I stopped for a pizza and a glass of wine before heading home to let the crowds pass. I chatted to a couple of women who reckoned the clothes and even his name are signs that he will be different to Francis. We’ll see. I thought his speech was very moving. My first impressions are good. I’m just glad that I went.
