Who is going to be the next Pope

The Conclave starts today. I'm quite interested to see who will be the successor to Francis.

Seems Cardinal Parolin is the favourite. He's Italian. I hope its not him. Very conventional knows the ropes. Bit of a boring choice.

Cardinal Tagle from the Philippines. Now that would be a lot more interesting. There is a huge Catholic population there. He's second favourite.

Then Cardinal Turkson from Ghana I think. Now that will be really interesting. I think a good thing.

Then Cardinal Zuppi another Italian. Again boring. We need somebody to make a mark but maybe not too big a one.

Anyone got an opinion on this.

I wouldn’t worry too much about pope dividing Church. We have had some pretty bad examples - multiple popes, popes fathering children, popes living luxurious lifestyles. Yet here we are - watching that chimney 😁

Also: Napoleon Bonaparte once taunted a Catholic cardinal by threatening: “Your Eminence, are you not aware that I have the power to destroy the Catholic Church?” To which the cardinal quipped: “Your Majesty, we Catholic clergy have done our best to destroy the Church for the last eighteen hundred years. We have not succeeded, and neither will you.

Love it! I think it's good indication of what they say - that the institution is both human and divine. The human element have been so bad over the millenia that, only for divine intervention, it would be finished centuries ago 😂

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/05/2025 15:15

Maybe Sarah. I hope they decide soon.

ITookYourJoob · 08/05/2025 15:24

@ThisLovingTiger absolutely, after all our first pope St Peter denied he even knew Jesus. It’s safe to say papacy has been human from the very beginning 😅

Yes I think it’s odd logic that the Pope is supposed to fix all social issues.

His role is a religious one.

There’s an entire section in the catechism on social issues. His role is both.

I think what people are looking for is perhaps another pastoral pope rather than a theological one when they say liberal. And Francis may not have changed much but that was a fairly seismic shift in the tone of the conversation. No Pope is going to come in straight off the bat and make major changes. The Catholic Church doesn’t move that fast. It will be lots of smaller changes if/when it happens.

I'm interested having watched and loved Conclave. Saw a story yesterday that apparently lots of the cardinals who are relatively new have been watching it to get a handle on how it all works!

From what I've seen Tagle would be a sound choice. Is he too much of a favourite?

I've only seen one lot of black smoke reported so far today. Aren't there four rounds of voting scheduled? Shouldn't we have heard about the second round of voting (third in total) by now?

According to the BBC, for now it’s either white smoke or non. There was due to be a vote around 3pm uk time, which presumably didn’t result in a decision, with the next around 4.30pm uk time

You could have a word with your local priest about having confession. If you don't like him you can go to another parish. Priests are only human so you may find one having a bad day or is just a cranky fella. Anyway, any priest worth his salt will offer you confession, doesn't matter if you don't attend, doesn't matter if you have doubts, and it doesn't have to be in the box, etc.

Oh I think Id feel a bit weird without the box!
Thanks. I think I will. I live in a bit of a C of E area, so there is a Catholic Cathedral and a smattering of churches but I might go to my local one, then the Cathedral

Thanks, how odd! I would think they'd do the smoke consistently, not just for the first couple..

Was St Peter the first pope? Did he go to Rome after Jesus died/rose?

Tomatotater · 08/05/2025 16:03

CowTown · Yesterday 18:26
Donald J Trump thinks it should be him.
Hilarious because when he said how much he liked the bible, he was asked if he preferred the New Testament or the Old Testament. He said he “likes them both equally”.
And when asked what his favourite bible verse was, he couldn’t come up with one. Even a child who has been in Sunday School for a few sessions can repeat John 3:16.

I mean Donald Trump though VE day should be called 'Victory in WWII day', completely ignoring that its called VE day because the US (and others) were still at war with Japan, and his own country ended it by dropping an atomic bomb on them! He's such a patriot he doesn't even know his own country's history so its unsurprising that he is so Christian that he thinks nothing of mocking the Pope, who's funeral he'd been to days before and doesn't know anything at all about the bible!

Is the pope expected to fix all social issues? Personally, I just want him to try not to contribute to them and to try to mitigate the ones the Church caused.

EmmaJane2025 · 08/05/2025 16:06

So what does white smoke mean then, if it appears? That one has been chosen?

It’s complicated.

Tradition has it that all popes are successors to St Peter but it’s not clear that he was ever physically in Rome.

There’s also some evidence he was married at one point, which would be an interesting take considering the current position on priests being unmarried / celibate (although quite a few popes have fathered children!)

At that time the Romans (meaning ancient Romans through the part of the world ruled by Rome, rather than the population of Rome specifically) weren’t too keen on Christians - they tended to be crucified, fed to lions in arenas, etc. There is evidence of the apostles travelling throughout that part of the world around the Mediterranean and communicating with communities in that area (St Paul’s letters in the New Testament, for example) but there had to be a fair amount of hiding which means the only official records of Christians is likely to be when they were arrested and other evidence has to be pieced together a bit

Peter was married. Jesus healed his mother in law.

There are early Christian writers who talk about Peter establishing the church in rome.

He is believed to have been crucified near St Peters and his tomb under it. There is now archaeological evidence to support this but obviously it's not conclusive.

He is regarded as the first pope and all subsequent popes are his successor.

ITookYourJoob · 08/05/2025 17:02

Of course St Peter went to Rome. He was crucified there 🤨 Also, the famous quote “Quo vadis Domine?” was from the time he fled from Rome and saw Jesus. There is even a church build somewhere based on this encounter. Unless I’m mixing something up and it was a different apostle 🫣

EmmaJane2025 · 08/05/2025 17:08

White smoke!

ITookYourJoob · 08/05/2025 17:09

We have a pope! 🥳

Viviennemary · 08/05/2025 17:13

That's exciting. I switched on the news a few minutes ago and nothing. Thought it would be later tonight or tomorrow.

I almost missed it. So glad I was watching. It gave me goose bumps!

Any idea how quickly he’ll appear so we’ll know who it is?

scalt · 08/05/2025 17:17

Boris Johnson will probably throw his hat in the ring, thinking it will take him one step closer to becoming God. Nobody explained to him the need to be Catholic. He’d just be thinking “but I’d get to ride in an armoured Popemobile, and everyone would look at me!”

dontcallmelen · 08/05/2025 17:25

That was quick I wasn’t expecting white smoke until at least tomorrow

St Peter was crucified upside down. So an inverted cross is not a satanic symbol at all,it’s the cross of St Peter.
