Who is going to be the next Pope

The Conclave starts today. I'm quite interested to see who will be the successor to Francis.

Seems Cardinal Parolin is the favourite. He's Italian. I hope its not him. Very conventional knows the ropes. Bit of a boring choice.

Cardinal Tagle from the Philippines. Now that would be a lot more interesting. There is a huge Catholic population there. He's second favourite.

Then Cardinal Turkson from Ghana I think. Now that will be really interesting. I think a good thing.

Then Cardinal Zuppi another Italian. Again boring. We need somebody to make a mark but maybe not too big a one.

Anyone got an opinion on this.

I’ve been reading about past conclaves. Supposedly there were far fewer cardinals in the past, making conclaves a bit more straightforward. Perhaps cardinals weren’t appointed in far away countries as they wouldn’t get to the Vatican to vote (I’m thinking in the time of Mary I).

HighlandPaddy · 07/05/2025 16:23

I hope they don’t elect a right wing pope, praying whoever is elected continues in Pope Francis’ footsteps 🙏🏽.

NotOnThsAsosChristmasCardList · 07/05/2025 16:24

I'm noticing a big difference in some of their rings - is there any meaning by this? Different rankings etc.

I hope it's someone who continues the modern approach Francis took. The last thing we need is to go backwards.

CatOnAHotRadiator · 07/05/2025 16:25

I’m always fascinated by conclave and the process. I’m Church of England not catholic so don’t really have much knowledge of the individual cardinals but I’m a sucker for a process that hasn’t changed for hundreds of years. The seriousness is something it would be good to see reflected in secular politics. Regardless of any behind the scenes disagreements the face is reassuring and consistent.

I'd vote for the youngest guy if I had a say. I've no idea what his creditionals are but staying alive seems like it would be a good starting point.

Or a disaster if they live for ages and aren't good...goes both ways I suppose. Having a new Pope every few years takes the excitement out of it though 🤷‍♀️

Babyboomtastic · 07/05/2025 16:32

Watching the BBC now. It's been a long time since I felt young as a middle aged woman, but all the talk about 'yoing' cardinals in their 60s is making me feel almost embryonic.

Hundred per cent agree really don’t want a conservative Pope ideally a real progressive with humility & kindness

Personal choice or gifts. My friend wears a copy of the ring that was given to bishops who were at the second Vatican council. When he was in my diocese, he wore the original ring. But left it when he left and wears one I bought him. (He chose it)

PrincessOfPreschool · 07/05/2025 16:41

I like Zuppi. He's not boring, he works a lot with the poor and marginalised and v liberal. I'm not catholic so not really entitled to an opinion! Pierbatista Pizzaballa (what a name! I'm assuming he's Italian!) is also a good egg, in my opinion.

Thank you for answering my question.

This is what I’m hoping as well. Someone who feels like they’re one of the people.

mugglewump · 07/05/2025 16:44

My gut feel is a non-white pope who is conservative/traditional.

Babyboomtastic · 07/05/2025 16:46

Argh with the cameras as the people left the chapel. They were uncomfortably close to accidentally upskirting a bishop! 😬

ITookYourJoob · 07/05/2025 16:46

Pope Francis was conservative though. I don’t know why secular media wants to make him liberal. Maybe liberal to Catholic standards, which only means interpreting Catechism broader. Or perhaps that he was less pompous and formal, but he was a Jesuit, too so that explains that.

Quite from catholic DH...
You don't want the Pope to be too young - an older Pope has a naturally limited term of office which avoids a certain amount of discontent as if his views are less popular then everyone knows that it won't be too long.

Interestingly, I think it would be the non white populations that would have the most issue with a non white pope, especially in countries where (sadly) whiteness is next to godliness. It would certainly be interesting but realistically I think their conservatism would upset more liberal Westerners and their race would upset the rest of the world. (Not sure how conservative the Cardinal from the Philippines is).

This is one Pope I would be very happy with!! 🤣 🤣 ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️

Who is going to be the next Pope
deeahgwitch · 07/05/2025 17:28

I just hope it’s someone who has spoken out loudly and in a very condemnatory fashion about the dreadful abuse of children by members of the Catholic Church and their clergy.
Someone who is more human than theologian.
Someone who abhors the vast wealth of the church when so many of its members are poverty stricken.
Someone liberal.
Is anyone with those credentials even going for the job ? 🤷‍♀️

@IlovelowryVincent Nichols is from Crosby, Liverpool!

There you are then - 100% Irish. There has been an English Pope , Nicholas Brakspeare who was Hadrian the something? He gave Henry II permission to invade Ireland actually. Perhaps the Anglo Irish Pope Vincent would be a fitting compromise but I'm not sure of his age.

Vincent Nicols is Irish.

Well of Irish descent, but was born in Britain

ViolaPlains · 07/05/2025 17:37

I’d like Cardinals Pizzaballa or Sarah. Unfortunately Cardinal Zen is too old.

I’ve found this a very useful resource.

It's not about left, right, conversative, liberal. I want a Holy and good pope.

Team Tagle here.
