No grey smoke necessary.

First 100 days have come and gone. Vance has killed the Pope, Musk is melting away and Trump's tariffs are on a slow boat to China.

Coming soon... Bigly's Birthday Parade. What could possibly go wrong?

House Republicans just passed Trump's budget bill — which contains massive Medicaid cuts — over unified Democratic opposition.

What effect do you (everyone) think that will have on the state of the union? What are the not so rich MAGATs going to do when they realise that there’ll be no free/cheap medication for shooting themselves in their collective feet?

DuncinToffee · 22/05/2025 13:50

This is what JD Vance said in 2017

"What is it that's going to drive Trump's voter away from him? Well, losing their health care may actually be the answer to that question."

Mission accomplished?

DuncinToffee · 22/05/2025 13:52

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the bill would add about $2.3tn (£1.7tn) to the US national debt over the next 10 years.

What does 🍊 care?
He's in his 2nd term.
But he's managed to shoot his VP in the foot.
That should be applauded.

215 to 214 "One Big Beautiful Bill Act"

On to the Senate now where the Republicans are even more afraid of displeasing the Orange Overlord.

Fact-checking Trump's Oval Office confrontation with Ramaphosa
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ce9vxve994ro

I'm sure you'll be astonished to learn that much of Trump's video was false.

Trump: "These are burial sites right here. Burial sites. Over a thousand of white farmers."
Image is really of a protest consisting of temporary white crosses installed along a road verge.
(This one should have been obviously suspicious, because a long road verge is not a usual choice as a cemetery.)

Trump: "These are all white farmers that are being buried."
Image is really a report from Democratic Republic of Congo about women being killed.

Fact-checking Donald Trump's Oval Office confrontation with Cyril Ramaphosa

President Trump made a series of claims about the killing of white farmers in South Africa, some of which are demonstrably false.

I knew a good journalist would find out what they were. There was no way they were ever what Trump claimed they were. There was no attempt at a cover up by the SA contingent at all, they were all ‘WTF is that and where is it.’

And that’s before you get to the fact that the number of white farmers killed in the genocide has yet to reach triple digits.

I wonder if it was an NBC journalist who investigated?

Will this be covered in the White House Press Briefing?

cakeorwine · 22/05/2025 18:08

SerendipityJane · 22/05/2025 18:01

But what do you do when the Trumpster only has to say the lie and it will be believed by his faithful ?

Meanwhile

In the UK, it would probably appear on Have I got News for You. With Hislop saying what Trump had said and then the actual crosses being shown.

Hopefully not that idiot Pete. He’s a terrible journalist. Awful. Complete jerk. Or so I’ve heard.

TBF - the question about the plane after that video was not really appropriate.

A better question would have been - how do you know that the images of the crosses show the burial sites of white farmers?

MigsandTiggs · 22/05/2025 18:57

In WH briefing today, KL pushed back on the video of crosses and said that each one 'represented' a murdered white farmer.

BUT
The Independent:
At one stage, Trump flipped to a printout of a blog post from The American Thinker titled “Let’s talk about Africa, which is where tribalism takes you.”
The featured image on the article, which was taken from a months-old on February 7, showed Red Cross aid workers at a scene in the city of Goma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where a mass rape and murder incident had occured.
“Look, here are burial sites all over the place. These are all white farmersthat are being buried,” the president falsely claimed while holding up the piece to reporters.

Sky news is featuring reactions to the Trump/Ramaphosa 'meeting'.

i was literally going to post the exact same. and Kristi Noem has the utter audacity to say this: ‘Let this serve as a warning to all universities and academic institutions across the country.’ This is getting bloody scary now.

MigsandTiggs · 22/05/2025 19:01

Worth a read on one journalist's belief that the meeting was a lost opportunity for Ramaphosa.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/may/22/cyril-ramaphosa-donald-trump-bizarre-ambush-south-africa

Everything Mji says is true. Unfortunately including this bit:

I appreciate that it may not have been the right occasion and Trump was probably not a receptive audience for a nuanced conversation.

So I agree wholeheartedly with this bit:
Still, it saddens me to think of the resources poured into this mission to correct the damage being wrought by a malicious, white supremacist agenda in South Africa and the US.

I’d like to say I’m shocked, but let’s face it this is pretty much par for the course now.

I'm still sitting here struggling with my disgust at Trump appropriating the massacre of black women to claim white victimhood.

Over 130 women, and at least 25 children, were burned alive in a prison in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, earlier this year – many of them having first been raped. It was an attack by male prisoners who escaped the jail.
