The BBC reporting on the tariff ruling is irritating amusing. They are taking a "who'd have thunk it !" stance as if this fell from a clear sky.

If they had been paying any attention at all, they'd have known* that the tariffs were on shaky ground and there was a groundswell of serious legal opinion that this would happen.

However that's so much froth. Hopefully UK government experts were a little more informed and this development is following a path someone has mapped out in their contingency planning.

Being a nerd, nothing infuriates me more than this faux "No one could ever have imagined ..." line which is spun out to excuse systemic incompetence. Especially in an age which it is embarrassingly easy to show that the warnings were load and clear before the event.

Luckily they aren’t also doing something as stupid as allowing a potential pandemic flu strain to run unchecked through mammals on farms giving it plenty of chance to find those couple of mutations it needs.

Started reading reactions to the tariff ruling.

Unfortunately for Trump, a literate rest of world is now going to ignore his hissy threats over trade because they have been told loud and clear that his power to act has limits. Even if the higher courts strike down the ruling (unlikely) then the principle that the courts still constrain the Donald will affect their future negotiations.

If he wants to become the dictator he thinks he is, then this is the hill to die on. This should be the moment that he and his acolytes knew was coming, and which they have a plan to surmount. Somehow I doubt it though.

If it were in their nature, the Chinese could power all of China with the warm glow of smugness.

The worry is that he wouldn’t obey the court ruling like he did with illegal deportations
