Favourite ice cream flavour and/or brand

It's decades since I've bought ice cream, consequently I'm very out of touch. When I was a bairn in the 70s and 80s there was very little choice. Vanilla, Cornish, Raspberry Ripple and Neapolitan was about it. The take-home market was dominated by Lyons Maid and Walls, with Midland Counties bringing up the rear. Vanilla was OK but a bit dull. I quite liked RR. I only liked the strawberry part of Neapolitan. The chocolate part never tasted like chocolate and I've not liked chocolate ice cream since.

What do folk buy these days?

I remember seeing pistachio ice cream in a French supermarket in 1982. It was an appealing green colour but I can't imagine it having much flavour.

Gin and tonic ice cream, or ice lollies, might be good.

Gotta be vanilla!

HeidioftheAlps · 29/04/2025 22:10

I had rhubarb and custard at Lulworth cove, dorset which I liked. Also bilberry at Dunster, Somerset. Bilberries have a different name there which I have forgotten.

Local Italian family business their black cherry and amaretto ice cream is perfection

icebearforpresident · 29/04/2025 22:21

I don’t usually have it in the house but if I buy ice cream it’s Ben & Jerrys phish food or dulce de lish.

There’s an ice cream shop near me which does different flavours every day, all home made with milk from a local farm. Their coffee ice cream is my favourite (but none of it is bad to be honest)

minnienono · 29/04/2025 22:24

Chocolate brownie, Lidl. Though I much prefer gelato from a proper gelato shop, ideally ginger or Turkish delight or pistachio. Actually the pistachio kulfi you can buy from the Asian supermarket is great

Titasaducksarse · 29/04/2025 22:25

Joe's vanilla

JemimaTab · 29/04/2025 22:33

Jude’s are very good - especially the flat white, and the rum & raisin.
Hackney Gelato are also excellent - they do an amazing chocolate & roasted hazelnut, and a clotted cream & strawberry.
I do like a good vanilla too, and mint chocolate chip.

I love love love liquorice ice cream, but it’s almost never found outside Scandinavia 😢

Oh, me too!

Ellmau · 29/04/2025 22:46

I'm boring and like Walls vanilla.

Parents' current fave is Haagen Dazs praline.

My absolute favourite, I buy liquorice syrup and swirl it on a good vanilla ice cream. Delicious, but still does not come close to buying it from an ice cream stall in Scandinavia.

Edited

@TropicalRain I’d never heard of this! Have googled: is it Thorncroft you buy?

There’s an ice cream shop at the dairy down the road from me. They use the excess cream from skimmed and semi skimmed milk to make ice cream. It’s just delicious

They do seasonal flavours - rhubarb is in at the moment, elderflower late May, strawberry in late June and July, elderberry in September etc - as well as regulars like ricotta and fig or butterscotch.

It’s quite expensive but my god, it’s good!

Wow-I want all of these!
Our local farm shop does a sublime rum and raisin and occasionally a mad flavour like liquorice or pina colada.
At home, I like M and S raspberry ripple and anything coffee themed! Or an old school mint Vienetta or dark choc ice!

Waitrose No.1 Santa Domingo Chocolate.

Was going.to say this. Happened across this other day as it was placed near some little magnum type things I was getting for DCs - it was on offer and I thought it looked good.
Soooo delicious - really nice cocoa/chocolate flavour. Best I've had in ages. Most ice cream is totally awful/bland.
Sadly I looked the other day and it was back at £4 something so l left it (think the offer was £3ish)

Used to love Ben and Jerry's cookie dough ad a once in a while treat. So disappointed last time.i had it. Major shrink elation happening. Not only is the tub smaller but there is less cookie dough and the cho pieces much smaller. Made me sad!

AuraBora · 29/04/2025 22:55

*shrinkflation! (Defo not shrink elation!)

I adore pistachio ice cream but only really find it in Europe.

Ocado sell Hackney Gelletto, lemon, almond and pistachio ice cream

Pistachio ice cream is great actually!I'm sure lots of places sell it but I can't recommend any particular one, I'm afraid.

BeNiceWhenItsFinished · 29/04/2025 22:59

It has to be a really good quality vanilla ice cream for me. My favourite always used to be raspberry ripple, but I haven't come across a decent one for a very long time indeed.

This one: https://www.liquoriceheaven.com/products/lakritsfabriken-sweet-salty-liquorice-syrup-two-pack-2-x-100ml

Lakrids by Bulow used to do one, but I don't see it anymore.

With a lovely vanilla, left to get a little soft, then with lovely swirls of licorishy yumminesss. I use the sweet syrup but maybe I should try a mix of salt and sweet 😋

Rum and raisin from all the farms that make their own.
shop bought - Ben and jerrys choc fudge brownie, since they stopped cherry garcia

CalicoPusscat · 30/04/2025 05:30

I love co-op pistachio with raspberry and mascarpone

Zanatdy · 30/04/2025 05:42

HD pralines and cream is delicious. I love pistachio but usually just get that when overseas. I love nutty flavours. When I go to Florida I go to walmart and get a big tub of butter pecan.

In the UK i get Oppo salted caramel, though my tesco delivery has just stopped doing it. Gutted. I tend to buy the low cal stuff as i’m always dieting and can’t afford the calories of HD pralines and cream, but that would be my ice cream of choice.

bringonyourwreckingball · 30/04/2025 06:10

My favorite is passion fruit but can’t get it here - I did try making my own but sieving out the seeds made me lose the will to live.
I had gooseberry crumble ice cream at the Hay festival years ago, that was amazing.

BigDahliaFan · 30/04/2025 06:25

I find it all just tastes of ‘sweet’ the mass produced stuff. Our local ice cream maker does a vanilla that’s gorgeous, and theres a gelato shop for salted caramel. Local is best.

and yes Neapolitan, the chocolate was never good.
