It's decades since I've bought ice cream, consequently I'm very out of touch. When I was a bairn in the 70s and 80s there was very little choice. Vanilla, Cornish, Raspberry Ripple and Neapolitan was about it. The take-home market was dominated by Lyons Maid and Walls, with Midland Counties bringing up the rear. Vanilla was OK but a bit dull. I quite liked RR. I only liked the strawberry part of Neapolitan. The chocolate part never tasted like chocolate and I've not liked chocolate ice cream since.

What do folk buy these days?

This one: https://www.liquoriceheaven.com/products/lakritsfabriken-sweet-salty-liquorice-syrup-two-pack-2-x-100ml

Lakrids by Bulow used to do one, but I don't see it anymore.

With a lovely vanilla, left to get a little soft, then with lovely swirls of licorishy yumminesss. I use the sweet syrup but maybe I should try a mix of salt and sweet 😋

Amazing! Thank you, @TropicalRain. What do you do with the salty one? What else do you do with the sweet?

@Haveapotato Thank you I’ll have a look!

Kelly’s clotted cream or raspberry and cream.

We have several local ice cream parlours near us and they all make their own - I tend to go there.

Oh, me too!

I found it in either Torquay or Paignton (or both!)

Deathraystare · 30/04/2025 08:56

I thought Ihat replied before. Sorry if repeating myself! New Forest Honey and ginger, also their rhubarb crumble, coconut and rum and raisin. Also Waitrose coffee and their lime and coconut. THe only Ben and Jerry's one Ilke (the rest are the usual brownie/ salted caramel,/ cookie dough, that is everywhere!) is Cherry Garcia. Although I normally do not like chocolate ice cream, I love the choc cherry combo. Sadly that is the one flavour I cannot get in shops!

When I fancy some ice cream from the shops I normally go for Haagen Daaz Vanilla as the other flavours are far too sweet for me.

I love sorbet too!

Fouberts in Chiswick does a lovely rose water flavour that reminds me of the Persian ice cream!

I suppose there are unlimited possibilities for ice cream flavours. On one of the River Cottage programmes, HFW made tomato ice cream which doesn't sound appetising but it was a big hit, especially with the children.

Hagen Daaz Salted Caramel is my weakness.

And mine! All others pale by comparison…

Haagen Dazs Summer Berries and Cream
Perfection

There a famous ice cream kiosk in Dun Laoghaire on the coast near the pier just outside Dublin called Teddys.
Their 99s are delicious.
They also had a kiosk at the bottom of the pier. I’m not sure if they still run it.

On a sunny day oh my, the queues !

Loved proper Raspberry ripple. Suppose nowadays it's either Hagen Dazs, virtually any one, or Carte dor, or Kelly's vanilla. Both of which are considerably cheaper than HD but equally nice, imo.

Mackies raspberry swirl is ace.

RickertyRocker · 07/12/2025 23:13

Conwys's Parisellas amaretto and cherry it black cherry ripple.

Aldi's new cherry Bakewell.l is 10/10

Snowontheroof · 07/12/2025 23:16

Nothing better than homemade, though it tends to be rather hard!. Love my own vanilla (Mrs. Beeton), strawberry (and also there's a great one with sherry and amaretti biscuits, both from Reader's Digest Cookery Year and dead easy). The only one I have enjoyed and am curious about was from Cyprus... tasted rather of pine trees?

I remember making avocado once...

Wobblylegs1 · 07/12/2025 23:20

How have you not eaten ice cream for decades?

If you want a normal tub without bits of cookie or marshmallow or whatever in it, go for Carte D’ore (sp?!)

EverythingIsComputer · 07/12/2025 23:26

Most mass produced shop bought ice cream is now absolute garbage, greasy and far too much air. Haagen Dazs & Waitrose No1 are the only ones I’ll buy. I either make my own or buy from a local place. Even Mackies is crap since they started packaging it in the farm.

Haagen Dazs Vanilla is my very favourite. I only really like vanilla ice cream though.

When I was a child we had a holiday in Devon and I remember sitting in the car eating a cone with a double scoop of vanilla that had a generous dollop of clotted cream on top. A proper vanilla ice cream can’t be beaten

I grew up in Devon and the make there was Pollards. They made coffee flavour which was very rare at the time.

AlwaysRightISwear · 07/12/2025 23:43

My current fave is Carte d'Or Solero Exotic.

Fionasapples · 07/12/2025 23:55

M&S raspberry ripple is my favourite
