Favourite ice cream flavour and/or brand

It's decades since I've bought ice cream, consequently I'm very out of touch. When I was a bairn in the 70s and 80s there was very little choice. Vanilla, Cornish, Raspberry Ripple and Neapolitan was about it. The take-home market was dominated by Lyons Maid and Walls, with Midland Counties bringing up the rear. Vanilla was OK but a bit dull. I quite liked RR. I only liked the strawberry part of Neapolitan. The chocolate part never tasted like chocolate and I've not liked chocolate ice cream since.

What do folk buy these days?

Haagen-Dazs do a Mango & Raspberry, I assumed it was a sorbet the first time I bought it but it’s actually a really delicious creamy ice cream otherwise it’s Mackies vanilla which we top with a dulce de leche sauce in this house

ItsOoooon · 29/04/2025 19:29

Haagan dazs salted caramel
Ben and jerrys chocolate fudge brownie

or my fave is mint choc chip if just a tub.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 29/04/2025 19:30

Kelly's salted caramel is lovely.

Waitrose Colombian coffee. It's the only brand/shop I can find for coffee ice cream which is my out and out favourite flavour, followed by rum & raisin. If anyone knows where I can get rum & raisin easily, please please let me know!

LezUlez · 29/04/2025 19:35

At home my DH likes Mackies, not vanilla, but one called traditional which is just dairy flavour if that makes sense. In Italy the supreme flavour I had was rose and choc chip, but also remember one in Germany many years ago called Eierlikor which I think is German for advocate.

lavenderlolly · 29/04/2025 19:37

Make my own.
Italian Leche and Dulce de Leche are favourites here.
My SIL loves Oreo ice cream.

Wallings. Not sure how far southwards that has travelled yet.

I live near Wallings too and the blackcurrant cheesecake ice cream is my favourite 😍

I like a good chocolate ice cream with chocolate ripple. NOT chocolate chips, chunks, or cookie dough. Until relatively recently the Co-op did a Venezuelan double chocolate ripple ice cream that was AMAZING! The one they do now isn't Venezuelan chocolate - it is still very good but not quite as amazing.

if anyone knows of a really good chocolate ice cream with chocolate sauce rippled through it and with NO other extraneous stuff, please let me know!

I make my own. Vanilla and cookie dough is my favourite.

Oooh I fancy making it too. Can I please ask what ice cream maker you have and how you find it ?

Haveapotato · 29/04/2025 19:41

@exquisitesocialskills you can still get CG at some cinemas! I only found that out recently and DH drove me to the local Odeon just to get some

butterfly0404 · 29/04/2025 19:42

There is a brand called Marshfields, made in Bath, their Blackcurrant and clotted cream flavour is out of this world.

I also love New Forest Ginger ice cream.

The most amazing restaurant icecream I've ever had was Goats Cheese and lavender... I thought I'd died and gone to ice cream heaven, honestly the best I've eaten but this was years ago and never found any since.

@lindorDoubleChoc our Sainsbury's sells Jude's Flat White and Rum and Raisin flavours, I think some Waitroses stock it too

Yes Mackies! So good!

Haveapotato · 29/04/2025 19:50

@woodlandlove you can get Judes plant based mint choc chip on ocado

I swear I don't work for Judes this is my third post on this thread about them 😂

supercatlady · 29/04/2025 19:54

I love a nice strong coffee ice cream. Also, there’s a shop in Dawlish that sells scoop ice cream with a dollop of clotted cream on top - so good!

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 29/04/2025 19:59

I like those Nui ones

TheTecknician · 29/04/2025 20:13

@Mickeychampionwhatgoodami That oblong ice cream was Lyons Maid, IIRC.

I made ice cream once - blackcurrant, using a Delia Smith recipe. No ice cream maker involved. Just followed the instructions and it worked really well. Nice and rich and purple. I had to use tinned blackcurrants but it was none the worse for that.

Can anybody bite into ice cream without setting their teeth on edge? I couldn't in my younger days but maybe now.

I think the last ice cream I bought was called strawberry champagne swirl, from Safeway. Obviously not recently!

I love love love liquorice ice cream, but it’s almost never found outside Scandinavia 😢

My absolute favourite, I buy liquorice syrup and swirl it on a good vanilla ice cream. Delicious, but still does not come close to buying it from an ice cream stall in Scandinavia.

Mapleunicorn · 29/04/2025 21:22

Ben and Jerry’s phish food
Ben and Jerry's cherry Garcia
Green and blacks chocolate
the Waitrose white chocolate one
coop Belgium chocolate one
any brand of clotted cream and raspberry

(yes I like chocolate a lot!)

OakyStuff · 29/04/2025 21:31

Stracciatella! So difficult to find a good one here but really common in Europe.
