Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

Mass would have been said with the funeral rites as part of the service hence the duration. I'm not sure but I think in non Catholic funerals you just get the funeral rites.

Hopefully practicing Christians will correct me kindly if I'm wrong.

You are quite right.
Catholics have a Reqium mass which is a the full mass plus the funeral service.
They can of course ask not to have a full mass.

I'm loving the image of the world leaders munching on sausage rolls and trying not to spill crumbs down their expensive suits. Obviously they'd need a vegetarian alternative for the Muslim and Jewish leaders.

They probably ordered pizzas in from that pizza shop where the owner handed a pizza to Pope Francis in his popemobile once.

Plenty of choice for vegetarians and meat eaters and papal approved.

@jaytotbad Thank you, very informative. 👍

I'd be amazed if they don't also have working plans for indoor ceremonies. Rome gets chilly enough in winter, and there's surely a Vatican equivalent of Operation London Bridge.

No
They’ll stand outside
A bit of rain isn’t going to stop them paying their respects.

It was the invocation of the saints. I found it pretty hypnotic.
The pall bearers didn’t do that last transfer well and always looked under pressure, but they weren’t military men or people trained to it, just men the late Pope had asked for. It’s not a big deal if they aren’t polished.

I'm old enough to remember Churchill's funeral, it was very cold and the steps of St Paul's Cathedral were icy, one of the military pall bearers slipped and fell. Luckily they managed not to drop the coffin though.

Isn't Starmer a veggie? He may eat fish.

Vegetarians don't eat fish - a fish is an animal - duh !

Thanks for the giggle anyway. 😅 I'm sure you're forgiven; go in peace. 🙂

Oh yes, this old chestnut* again! 🙄

*Chestnuts are of course a suitable vegetarian food. Unlike fish.

I love the incense bit at funerals. I'd like to buy whatever it is Catholic churches use.

Catholic churches use Frankincense and Myrrh
Sometimes just one, sometimes a mix

I agree
I love the smell too.

Yes, I know. Obviously. I was typing he's a veggie and then pondering he may be pescatarian. Sorry for not being precise in a conversational thread.

Try "True Grace" Sacristy scented candle. You can get them from John Lewis.

Their Victorian Orangery is also lovely

Private plane just left for RAF Northolt. Could he not at least stick around for the sandwiches ffs

Kick off's at 17.15, Villa v Coventry , FA Cup semi-final! I wonder if he has his scarf on the plane ready for a quick change?

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 14:37

Also where were the nuns?!

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 26/04/2025 14:38

A propos of nothing to do with Pope Francis, what’s with William growing a beard? To look like Harry? (Or has Harry shaved his beard off recently, I don’t really keep up with these things?)

TheTigerWhoCameToBrunch · 26/04/2025 14:42

I’m watching it on catch up now.

I’m Catholic, but when I see so many old men gathered in one place in all the religious regalia I can’t help but see a crowd of nonces.

They can’t all be good.

LovePeriodProperty · 26/04/2025 14:42

TheignT · 26/04/2025 10:42

Oh dear that's me told. My "excuse" is I'm old and that was how it was back in the day when I made my First Holy Communion. Sorry it displeases a convert who probably wasn't even born then.

Maybe she needs to read The Sermon on the Mount, particularly the bit about "judge not lest ye be judged."

Agree
It’s a choice
No one is more or less pious by how they take the communion.
Im amazed people think this…..it doesn’t seem like a very religious attitude to judge.

upinaballoon · 26/04/2025 14:44

I haven't read all through yet so please forgive this question if it's already been asked and answered. I was able to see the start and I saw 12 men carrying the coffin. Did anyone hear how much it might have weighed, including the late Pope's body? There was lovely wood on the outside. Were the joints on the corners 'mortice and tenon'? Was any lead involved inside? Did they need 12 bearers because of the weight or was it to ensure a very smooth journey? The fellow at front left certainly seemed to be struggling a bit at one point.

Mypoorbody · 26/04/2025 14:45

I think Pope Francis wanted the nuns and refugees at the ceremony for burial, not the dignitaries and the pomp.

A Catholic funeral does not have to be long and from what I hear the Pope had quite a bit that would normally have been added as he wax Pope cut.

I'm watching on catch up.

Who are all the men wearing light blue neck wear ? Or what is the significance of all the light blue neckwear (not ties, more like bow ties or cravats).

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 14:46

@AcquadiP absolutely, the body language between them was intriguing.

CarpetKnees · 26/04/2025 14:47

I keep looking at all those people thinking, what if they need a pee

Oh, I worry about this at every major ceremony like this. They must have to go for hours without a wee.

The very thought of not being able to go, makes me want to go.

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 14:47

@Mypoorbody I'm not happy with that segregation
