Watching it now. I'm not religious - but it is a fascinating watch and a beautiful setting.

I'm watching it, I'm not Catholic I'm pagan but I very much liked Pope Francis. He was a very humble man and quite liberal.
He always refused to wear the red designer shoes he wore worn down shoes of his own.
He was I think a real holy man. I admire those in any faith.

My feelings are similar too.
There are things about the catholic church that don't sit comfortably with me but its not going any where and i think Pope Francis was a good man who lead by example and i hope his influence continues and that a lot has been learnt from him which will continue in the hands of the next Pope.

Calliopespa · 26/04/2025 14:49

Anyone else wondering what Trump and Zelensky said to each other beforehand?!
ETA I think they had a meeting inside beforehand.

wizzywig · 26/04/2025 14:49

cakeorwine · 26/04/2025 09:17

I was thinking that as well.
Do you think it was a choice to wear that colour?

Blue goes well with orange

I don’t know, he only had one member of his family at his funeral.

I'm just glad Trump didn't turn up in a red frock and hat and insist the conclave elect him. Then rally right wing nutters to launch an attack on the Vatican if the vote doesn't go his way.

Though there's still time yet 😂

Good point.

I remember kneeling at the altar rails to receive communion in the 1960’s . The altar boys ceremoniously laid a white cotton runner along the entire length of the altar rails before communion then removed it near the end of Mass. We were taught to cup our hands under it while the priest made his way along the line so it acted as a bib if the host was dropped.

I had a very embarrassing mishap with it aged about 8 and attending Mass with my school class. I forgot to let it go and stood up after receiving communion and pulled the cloth off the rail 🙈 😆

Born mid 60s. We always kneeled at the altar for my church in England and when at home in Westmeath, ireland

The altar rail was removed at our Irish church and many people were upset by that.
The altar rail is still at our church here in England but the priests usually stand in front of it now at the head of each aisle.
I can’t remember when this changed but everyone kneeled at my parents funerals ( 2013 and 2014 ) because the priest asked us if we wanted that. It nice to have a choice

I’m watching it on catch up now.

I’m Catholic, but when I see so many old men gathered in one place in all the religious regalia I can’t help but see a crowd of nonces.

They can’t all be good.

I see the ones who treated paedophilia and instances of abuse as mere management issues, mildly irritating but routine cases where you forgot about the victims as a matter of course, and moved the perpetrators to another parish or diocese.

As if they were incompetent yet unfireable employees who might benefit from a clean start in another department.

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 14:59

@Calliopespa apparently a good and productive possibly historical meeting according to zelensky and in such auspicious circumstances

That’s what I heard. Fingers crossed. It would be lovely if something like that came out of it.

That's really sweet.
I'm not RC, was only tuned in for curiosity sake, so don't know much about him other than what was on main stream news.
But that is sweet that he was so intouch with the people.😀

There’s an excellent film called
The Two Popes with Anthony Hopkins playing Pope Benedict and Jonathan Pryce playing Pope Francis.

Its a funny film and based on reality.
There are lots of scenes like the Pope trying to phone people and being cut off because no one believes the Pope would do that

Theres another where the two of them hide in a tiny cupboard/ room from tourists in case they get seen. Then break free from protocol and open the door to the delight of the crowds.

So trump and zelensky were front row along with other head's but starmer was 3 rows back??

If it gets the war to stop I’m sure Il Papa would have approved!

Mypoorbody · 26/04/2025 15:17

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 14:47

@Mypoorbody I'm not happy with that segregation

I think that it’s where he can have people he was really close to. I think there is more tradition in the Vatican ceremony and frankly the Catholic Church has a long way to go recognising and elevating the role of women in the church. Still no women priests or deacons.

Things had changed a lot by 1975, back in the 50s on a Sunday there was 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 oclock Mass, there was also an evening Mass at about 6.30 I think. I can't picture many Catholic churches with the church so full that Communion has to be taken outside for the people who couldn't get into the church now. If I went to Mass with granny her church was even busier, they had Mass in the church and a second Mass in the school hall nextdoor and still had people on the pavement. I just can't picture that in 21st century England but maybe I live in a quieter parish.

Funnily enough I don't remember anyone wearing mantillas when I was a child, I lived in a poor area and most women wore a headscarf some wore hats.

Edited

I still have my mums black veils from mass.
I didn’t know they were called mantillas, so I’ve learnt something new today

I remember her wearing them for funerals 70s possibly. She definitely wore them in Ireland when women sat on the left of the church and men on the right. 70s again. I can’t remember if that relaxed in the 80s, I didn’t notice. My grandad always went to the right and we to the left.

I am an Irish Catholic also but was born in an African country in 1965 .I spent my teenage years in Ireland .I remember going to mass every Sunday as a small child and we wore our Sunday best .My mum wore either a hat or a mantilla as did all the other women and also white gloves ,The men all wore dark suits and ties and their hair was always slicked back , my brothers wore shorts ,shirts and dickie bows .I always wore a dress and white knee socks with frills at the top .We knelt at the alter to receive communion.I made my confirmation in Ireland and we all wore a white mantilla .Its amazing to see the change in dress in my lifetime .

I was born in Ireland a few years after you in 1969 but I don’t remember my mum wearing a mantilla or white gloves to Mass. However, my sisters and I did wear our school uniforms and a white mantilla for our confirmations. That’s long gone now of course. And I’m a lapsed Catholic.

I also don’t like the organ tagging along in the responsorial. Only voices is nicer.

You have to bear in mind that what we hear on TV is not what the faithful hear outside in the square. In this case, the amplified organ is not there for the singers (who would, no doubt, manage perfectly well without it) but for the entire congregation to participate in the responses and other sung parts of the liturgy. The organist is there to enable/lead the sung congregational response and is not 'tagging along'. There are huge acoustic problems in holding such a large outdoor mass and it seems that this is how they normally deal with some of them. Signed, a church organist.

That's whataboutery - Charles went to see the Pope shortly before he died. The timing was no accident.

Wasn't Charles and Camilla's wedding postponed because he had to attend a papal funeral? John Paul II, I think.

Oh right. Clearly every other world leader got it wrong then and Trump was the only one correct.

Or you know, the complete actual fucking opposite applies. 🤔

Agree.
Theres no rules on how important you are at a funeral and what colour you should wear.
Maybe that’s a local thing,

PensionedCruiser · 26/04/2025 15:27

LimesOfBronze · 26/04/2025 09:57

Anglicans can choose to have communion at a funeral.

Absolutely. I have been to a few.

And yet every other world leader managed to dress in a sober shade. If you think this choice wasn’t deliberate to make himself stand out, you haven’t been paying much attention to every other bit of his behaviour ever.

I think some people here need to turn the brightness down on their screens. I'm no more a Trump admirer than the next person, but there was nothing wrong with his suit. It was a suitably deep shade of blue. To read some comments here, anyone would think he'd turned up dressed as Mr. Tumble.

I’m not commenting on the black issue.
Im commenting on the PP that said black is kept for immediate family only and to wear black would be disrespectful. That’s not a Catholic thing at all

The respectful colour is black, whoever you are
Trump is an arse!

QuiteUnbelievable · 26/04/2025 15:35

@Allseeingallknowing the aggressor wants the whole of Ukraine so hopefully a compromise can be reached and USA can get in there as a buffer/backstop.

Then Ukraine can start to rebuild and also build up their fighting funds and have the air power they are lacking now.
Then Russia will never try again.
Zelelensky himself said it was a productive meeting so let's hope

Unfortunately being pragmatic Putin will never ever loose Face, back 👇 say he's sorry and and hand back land.
