Food you don’t often see anymore

BigJanette · 21/04/2025 11:48

What dishes did you used to eat, but don’t really see around anymore?

I’ve just remembered a M&S ready meal I ate quite regularly in my student days (this would’ve been in the mid 90s) but haven’t seen since.
Smoked haddock kedgeree.
Anyone else remember it?
I used to make it every so often, but haven’t done in years.
I think it’s time to remedy that and get it back on the menu.

Any easy recipes welcome!

@TheHistorian I think the Spam is mainly for anglers to buy as it’s a good fish bait (poor fish)

I think Bob Mortimer has appropriated it all as his "Pocket Meat"!

That's interesting. I've also seen it at a food bank, probably because they can't dispense fresh meat

Pink custard on school dinner puddings.

Yuck. I couldn't abide pink custard. Thank-you for reminding me of it 🙂

There’s a common theme to these (except kedgeree which is still very much on the menu in expensive hotels!) they are cheap cuts, preserved, stretching etc type meals filling bellies with needed food.

Today we have for the most part become more wasteful and definitely more picky despite our more adventurous palates. plenty of people will only eat chicken breast so the concept of chicken liver meatloaf which we had (basically chicken livers, pulses, breadcrumbs, herbs etc fried then mixed with an egg before baking) freaks them out. I’m on leftovers today, my favourite!

Calves foot jelly. Orange or lemon flavour, in a jar.

Tongue (I've not eaten it)

No, food banks don't have the capacity to give out fresh meat,

MyKingdomForACat · 21/04/2025 12:59

Tesco have fresh prawn cocktail and garibaldi biscuits.
Pease pudding in tins. Can only find it in Sainsbury’s.

Scentedjasmin · 21/04/2025 13:00

Lemon puff biscuits!!

Late Mil used to make pressed tongue as long as I didn't watch her make it, 🤢I ate it on a sandwich it was alright and not as bad as you imagined.

Bbq1 · 21/04/2025 13:01

We still do corned beef hash. I love it.

Scentedjasmin · 21/04/2025 13:01

Licorice Catherine wheels are becoming harder to find.

I used to love a cheap ready meal, not sure where from, I think most supermarkets did a version...it was chicken and mushrooms in a creamy sauce and white rice, I was obsessed with it and ate it all the time! It was boil in the bag 😀

Spam made bit of a comeback when East Asian food trended on SM

Lemon puff biscuits!!

I found some of these in the world food section of Morrisons the other week so someone somewhere in the world still makes them! They were fab.

Devilsmommy · 21/04/2025 13:02

The cereal Golden Graham's. You can only get the cinnamon ones now and also the Heinz treacle in a tin. I'm so gutted they stopped doing them

AnneKipankitoo · 21/04/2025 13:02

Toasted toppers
Tinned salad
sago

I lived in several countries as a child:

-Junket. My grandfather would buy little tablets and each had a colour and flavour. It was heated in milk then would set in the fridge. I've since learnt they were rennet tablets!

-Apricot chicken. Chicken thighs, cooked with onions in a sauce which included a tin of apricot juice and apricot halves.

-Tang. Essentially orange coloured sugar you mixed in water to make a sickly sweet drink.

-Tab. I think it was a diet version of cola in the early 80's? Instead of a ring pull top, it had 2 holes you had to pierce.

I think spam is popular amongst Polynesian countries.

DoYouReally · 21/04/2025 13:05

Baked Alaska and Flan.

I don't even really like them but they've a late 80s nostalgia value!

Those round flat chocolate cornflake cakes-you used to be able to buy milk and dark chocolate versions.

Oh yes, they were great.

Oh I hated flan tastes like a bath sponge with tinned peaches on top.

And it appears to be in Korea, Japan and at least parts of China as well. Philippines too.
I think islands had it brought in by travellers and, well let's be frank, occupiers, and then it became popular. Can't remember which island it was exactly but saw interesting documentary about the change of diet like that and subsequent effects on locals' health. Very interesting

Pushdontpull · 21/04/2025 13:09

Showing my age here, but Kunzle Cakes. A chocolate cup filled with cake and topped with buttercream. I thought they were the height of luxury when I was a child!
