Does anyone get up at 5am?

I’m thinking of joining the 5am club.

Honestly, I would get so much done if I got up at 0500. I’d get my chores done before work, get the gym earlier, a bit of quiet time with a coffee and I think it would make a big difference to my time management.

The only thing is I need a lot of sleep, so I’d need to go to bed at 2100 (I go to ged now at 2200 and get up most days at 0600)

If you get up early please tell me about your routine, body clock, what you get done and how you handle it.

up at 5 in work days: 4 dogs to walk, not all at once , 30 min run, breakfast, some chores and face on.
leave by8 am at latest for work. Bed is usually 9.30 to 10.30. tuesday will be hard but good to get back to my routine

PollyCreo · 20/04/2025 21:35

I get up at 5.30 (now) and go for a run at 6. In the winter I'm out at 6.30 but I'm not in the UK and it's light at that time.

I hate the initial getting up but once I'm out of bed it's fine. Need to be in bed by 22.00 though 😴

pearbottomjeans · 20/04/2025 21:35

I need to, like you say - for the peace and productivity, and exercise. But I have 3 kids, youngest is 3, oldest 2 will get up if they hear any movement from 5am onwards, and I work until 9pm 4 days a week so really not doable! So I will be mad and fat until any of the above allows me to get up at 5 haha.

Motherknowsrest · 20/04/2025 21:36

No, I'd be shattered and it would wake the rest of the house up anyway. I'd have to go to bed at 19:00 to wind down and sleep.

Wigtopia · 20/04/2025 21:38

I Get up at 05:30, bed for 21:30, lights out at 22:00.

its took a while to get into the swing of things, but a lumie alarm clock is great. It does a sunrise/sunset for a gentle waking up and falling asleep 🙂

I work from home, but use the early start for either cleaning, tidying, laundry a d once a week i go for an early weekly food shop.

it is bliss not having to do any of these things after work or at weekends! Highly recommend!!

Gymmum82 · 20/04/2025 21:39

i get up at 5am Monday to Friday to go to the gym. I go to bed at 10, sleep by 10.30. I’m usually pretty tired by the weekend but I have a lie in then until about 7.30

maddiemookins16mum · 20/04/2025 21:39

My alarm goes off at 5.30am. It’s harder in the winter but Spring and Summer it’s great. I WFH and by 8am (when I start work), my house is spotless, lunch and dinner are prepped, washing is done and hung up/out and I’ve done my 30 min walk. It makes my day so much more enjoyable, I take a full hour lunch break and sit in the garden or read or go for a bike ride. I finish work at 4.30pm and the rest of the day is mine.

jewelcase · 20/04/2025 21:39

I don’t think I could manage 5am. I’d be knackered all day. But a few years back I put my get-up time back from 7.00 to 6.25 in order to exercise. Now every day I do half an hour and it’s great! I reasoned that I was going to shower anyway, so it would literally be 30 minutes extra and no more! Pyjamas off, exercise for half an hour, then my normal getting ready for the day routine. It’s worked out perfectly. Hope yours does too!

HouseAshamed · 20/04/2025 21:40

I wake up about that time. Early morning are great in the summer but not in winter.

FoxRedPuppy · 20/04/2025 21:41

The years when my children woke at 5am (about 6-7 years in total) were some of the worst of my life! Doesn’t matter what time I go to bed. If I go at 9, I can’t sleep. So no. Unless I’m getting on a plane somewhere.

Even when I wake at 6.30, I need at least 30 mins and coffee to feel awake enough to drag myself out of bed. Today I woke naturally at 9.40am 😂

persisted · 20/04/2025 21:42

5:30, but now the mornings are lighter it'll get earlier.
Early morning runs in spring are a beautiful thing.

Martymcfly24 · 20/04/2025 21:43

Fuck no.

I calculate the latest possible time I can set my alarm for before I have to leave the house. (Usually 7:30- clothes left out, lunches made night before and have a banana for breakfast in the car) and no alarm on days off.

And I already go to bed at 10. I just love sleep more than anything else.

Fair play though, I would literally spend my whole life feeling sorry for myself!

PollyCreo · 20/04/2025 21:43

It does make me laugh though, I used to be staggering home at 6am and now I'm up at that time 😂

Soonenough · 20/04/2025 21:45

I would love to be able to do this . I am not and never have been a morning person . It was always a struggle but with work and kids you just had to . I am often awake at that time but I think if I got up I would be sleepy at 9am when I really do need to be up some days . On the odd occasion I do get up early, I feel that I achieve so much more with my day .

TennesseeStella · 20/04/2025 21:45

LOL. Not unless I've got a flight to catch.

notatinydancer · 20/04/2025 21:49

I’d love to do this. I sleep so badly though. Some nights I don’t get to sleep til 4am.
I can’t do it consistently either as I work shifts covering 24/7

Catsandcannedbeans · 20/04/2025 21:55

I do not do it, I can’t do it, we are not a morning house hold. If the kids come in at 5 they have to cuddle till at least 7, but they rarely do anymore.
My mum however still gets up at 5am. She did my whole childhood. With 6 kids this was the only alone time she got. She still does it despite living alone, she appreciates the peace. She always gets me up when I go and stay as well, she tries to convert me but I don’t think I’m built for it. I think if you are a 5AM person you’re just like that, I kind of think it’s one of them things where you have it or you don’t, it comes down to discipline at the end of the day. A spesific kind of discipline that I definitely don’t have.

stripedrollerskates · 20/04/2025 21:58

I used to do this because of a long commute and it transformed me into a morning person!

BatchCookBabe · 20/04/2025 21:59

I am LOL-ing at all the 'I get up at 4.30am to 5.30am every day' posters. Bet you all do 20,000 steps a day too! 😆

Parallel world of Mumsnet strikes again. 😂

tillyandmilly · 20/04/2025 22:00

Never got up at this ungodly hour! 5:00 am - !!!! middle of the night!

I can’t go to bed any earlier than midnight then get up 8.30 am for start of work at 9.30 am

Sheknowsaboutme · 20/04/2025 22:08

Im usually up at 6. Even on weekends or a day off

i feel staying in bed in a waste. I love my quiet breakfast, classic FM, reading the news. Then another coffee, go out to check the animals.

cant remember when i last stayed bed past 7am

narcASD · 20/04/2025 22:17

Not for me as I’m a night owl, I get more done late at night so prefer to sleep later in the morning, still get up at 6.30am for work / school run and that’s early enough

Goatinthegarden · 20/04/2025 22:22

My parents were early risers, so I’ve been one my whole life - even once I’d moved out for uni and was out on the lash, regularly crawling to bed for 4am, I’d wake up after a couple of hours in bed to start my hangover on the sofa.

Now in my late 30s, I go to bed about 11pm and wake up naturally about 5ish. I have no children, so I just start my day in peace. I have a coffee then cycle or run to work. Like a previous poster, I’m a teacher, so I get to school for just before 7 to get prepped. It means I get to leave about 4pm.

Kay00 · 20/04/2025 22:23

Yes. My routine is:

5am wake and throw on comfy clothes
5:05 let dogs out for a wee then feed them (let me old boy out for another wee)
05:30 shower
05:40 get dressed, hair, makeup
05:55 throw on boots and coat and take dogs for a short walk
06:15 once home wake up my OH so he can jump in the shower whilst I look after the baby/keep an eye on her whilst I get dressed into my work clothes. Tidy beds, open curtains, put on a wash etc.
06:40 leave the house
07:00 get to office

It's a slog. Honestly.

SD1978 · 20/04/2025 22:24

Nope. I would do nothing useful if I was up at that time, except wonder what the feck I’m doing up at that time @BCBird- it doesn’t sound like it does much for you either- is there a reason you persist with it? I wouldn’t be able to drag myself into doing anything useful, and would probably be dribbling by 20.00 so would get no evening either. But then I have worked nights for 15 years and struggled massively when I had to work morning shifts before that as I could never get enough sleep. Definitely function better at night than early morning!
