Does anyone get up at 5am?

BeingScouseIsMySuperpower · 20/04/2025 20:41

I’m thinking of joining the 5am club.

Honestly, I would get so much done if I got up at 0500. I’d get my chores done before work, get the gym earlier, a bit of quiet time with a coffee and I think it would make a big difference to my time management.

The only thing is I need a lot of sleep, so I’d need to go to bed at 2100 (I go to ged now at 2200 and get up most days at 0600)

If you get up early please tell me about your routine, body clock, what you get done and how you handle it.

Involuntary member of the 5 am club due to my son being an early riser and taking a lot of coaxing to go back to sleep. So sadly none of the benefits of an extra hour! My top tip would be to set yourself an alarm to go to bed. It's so easy to think that 9ish is super early and to push it to 10 but in reality when you are up at 5 - 9ish bed time is a must. I often go to bed with a book to make sure I'm in the sleepy zone.

MaggieBsBoat · 21/04/2025 07:26

I do. I am showered, done my day‘s official reading (I do a minimum of one hour a day), Duolingo, checked my emails, put a wash on usually and made porridge for the kids by 06:45. it sets me up for the day. I go to bed by 23:00. On a weekend I sleep until 0700 or 0800 and it feels like a massive lie in and treat. Like today!

devildeepbluesea · 21/04/2025 07:33

I’m awake by 5.30 most mornings. I have 2 coffees in bed then walk the dog (out by 6.45 when it’s light).

I can usually fit exercise in before I start work then. If I don’t exercise first thing it mostly won’t happen.

Houndsahollering · 21/04/2025 07:50

I get up at 3am; let dogs out, make a cuppa.
Have about 40 mins peace and quiet drinking tea, have a cig or 3, get dog walking clobber on. Walk the dogs (usually separately these days, my old boy can’t keep up with younger and she gets frustrated stopping every 3 paces to sniff lol).
Home, prep dog brekkie, empty dishwasher, have my breakfast, get work bags packed, sort lunch, do shopping list, tidy round, feed dogs etc.
in the shower at about 5am, get ready, out the door by 5.50am latest.
At work for around 7.15, means I can finish and leave by 3.30pm so have a much easier drive home.

I work with people in 5am club- all women interestingly. Seems they have to do this as useless husbands. Must be nice for their husbands to role over for a second sleep, knowing that the house is being cleaned and the dinner being whacked into the slow cooker…

Whereland · 21/04/2025 08:04

I can never understand how people who get up at 5 don’t wake everyone else in the house? My kids would be down the stairs after me in a flash!

Strawberryorangejuice · 21/04/2025 08:12

I go through periods of doing this as I am better in the mornings. Right now I'm just dreading having to he up at 6.30 tomorrow and getting everyone out to school!

It gives you so much time. But I found I was totally out of sync with dh who gets up at 7, (8.30 at weekends) and I’d have felt like I’d already had a full day and be wanting to go out while he was still waking up. I tend to get up at 6 now and have an hour to potter quietly.

BeingScouseIsMySuperpower · 21/04/2025 08:31

I might start with 0530 and see how I go.

I seem to be rushing with getting out the door for school run and work at 0720. I also find if I put on a wash, hang it out, and tidy up a bit before I leave, my life is less hell later in the week.

I remember a few tears ago getting up really early in the summer, and sitting in the garden with a coffee, really quiet with just the birds and it was lovely.

This is now officially my favourite MN thread.

As a rubbish early-riser I’m in absolute awe of all you 5am clubbers, and @Houndsaholleringyou must see another world out there, dog walking at that time.

I just wish I wasn’t a night owl. I feel I would get so much more achieved.

Elizabeth110100 · 21/04/2025 08:40

I get up between 5.30-6. I'm a teacher and a single parent so get as much stuff done in the morning as possible to make my evenings slightly less stressful. Even in the holidays I'm up early as my body clock just seems to be stuck at waking early. I usually do a run or home workout in the mornings before my daughter wakes and it really does put me in a better mood for the day. I am chronically sleep-deprived though as I struggle to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.

Andnowshesatoddler · 21/04/2025 08:40

I like to be up at 530 I get an hour before the rush of the day starts to have a proper coffee sort the washing machine dish washer etc which directly helps keep the washing pile down and the kitchen tidier also any jobs that the toddler stopped happening the day before my job is Flexi I can start pretty much when I want so earlier I get my butt into gear the earlier work is over so I aim to start as early as 6 a couple of days a week.

My Ds helps as much as I do around the house. But here school and nursery finish by lunchtime, all the way to senior age. With no family to help afternoons and little afternoon care it just makes sense. Means I can fit in 5hr workday which is fine, and just dh works full time

Scirocco · 21/04/2025 08:48

DC conscripted me as a 5:30am day-starter. However, DC also doesn't fall asleep much before 10pm and is up several times during the night. Maybe it's just part of a wider strategy for sleep deprivation, as I still have to get work done after DC goes to bed so I maybe get 5 hours sleep if it's a good night and usually closer to 4.

DH and I take turns for lie-ins at the weekend if we're not on-call. And we drink a lot of coffee.

On the plus side, it's not 9am yet and a good chunk of the household jobs are done.

Happyhettie · 21/04/2025 09:04

I’d love to be a member of the 5am club but the alarm goes off at 6am and I’m always tired. Doesn’t matter what time I go to bed or how much sleep I get, I just feel shattered.

It’s easier in the spring and summer to get up and be productive early but I really struggle in the winter.

This is a great thread and I don’t know if I’d be better having a more set routine? I know I spend too much time on my phone. Worst invention in the world for me was the smart phone!

TravellingJack · 21/04/2025 09:11

I do 3-4 times a week (alarm goes off at 5:09) but that’s only because I do bootcamp classes at 6am, about 20min drive away. I sleep badly about half the time (peri/anxiety) so I often snap awake at 3am, but the cumulative early starts and exercise then make me so tired that I can sleep through by the end of the week. A win in a way… I’m usually in bed by 10pm otherwise I fall asleep on the sofa. On holiday, my bedtime creeps later and so would my rising time if I didn’t have small children. I miss the days when a lie-in meant til at least 11am! Now if I manage to sleep past 8am it’s cause for celebration. I’m naturally a night owl so it’s a bit of a killer!

Ti7ch · 21/04/2025 09:22

Only in the summer when 7 / 8am is too hot to run

Scuttlecuttle · 21/04/2025 08:21

I was about to post the same!

Exactly. Mine would notice, especially the youngest who is 7yo. Teenagers wouldn't care but my youngest would. He wakes 6am most days.
I am always baffled by those who have a quiet coffee to themselves before rest of the house is up. My youngest would hear me moving around then...game over! No peace, no calm, no quiet. Just demand after demand after demand etc.

I'm not remotely in awe. Why the hell would anyone want to aspire to getting up at such a ridiculously early time (all the time?) Some are even claiming they regularly get up at 4.00am to 4.30am. Absolutely ridiculous! 😆 (Some don't even start work til 8.30am to 9am!)

No-one I know in real life gets up at this time. Even the milkman and the postman don't get up til 6am around here, and they're done by midday to 1pm. Of course, if someone's on 6am-2pm shift they'll be getting up at 5am, but some on here are claiming that's their normal waking up time every day. And they even have a full day of work (from 8.30am to 9am,) on top. (Plus travel time.)

So they're up at 4.30am to 5am, then out from 8am-ish, then back at 6-7pm (or later!) Batshit. 😂The vast, vast majority of people don't need to be up at 4.30-5am! (And the vast majority aren't, even though most people on this thread claim to be!)

LaurieFairyCake · 21/04/2025 11:17

There’s a few reasons why older (menopausal) women are getting up early. Im one of them and I’m always up by 5 and often 4 in summer.

first of all I sleep 5.5-6hrs and I’m dead on my feet and asleep in bed by ten. I take my progesterone tablet at 9.30 which has a sedative effect.

I used to be a night owl in my 20’s and 30’s, happily up til 1 in the morning and then sleep in til 9 or 10 at weekends.

completely changed in my late 40’s.

I’m ok on 6 hours sleep and the early waking now, just wait til menopause 😁

Summertimeblahness · 21/04/2025 11:18

Yes, previously by choice but now because of menopause!

KeepSmiling89 · 21/04/2025 11:23

I get up at 5am on a Friday morning as I go for an early morning 5k run with some members of my local jogging group. I struggle to get up at 5am any other day though...I'm lucky if I'm out of bed at 7am. I need to be more strict with my bedtimes though.
I've been reading the 5am Club book (recommended by my PT) and do feel like it could help me but I need to put actual theory into action!
