Does anyone get up at 5am?

BeingScouseIsMySuperpower · 20/04/2025 20:41

I’m thinking of joining the 5am club.

Honestly, I would get so much done if I got up at 0500. I’d get my chores done before work, get the gym earlier, a bit of quiet time with a coffee and I think it would make a big difference to my time management.

The only thing is I need a lot of sleep, so I’d need to go to bed at 2100 (I go to ged now at 2200 and get up most days at 0600)

If you get up early please tell me about your routine, body clock, what you get done and how you handle it.

I get up at 4:40-5ish but I don't get anything done.
I just like waking early and daydreaming sitting in the silence by myself until the last second when I have to get ready 🤣 and still end up late for work 😆

DrFoxtrot · 20/04/2025 22:40

I’m the sort of person that would feel happy that I’ve got at least another 2-3hrs in bed if I accidentally woke at 5am 😂.

I can’t imagine having three changes of outfits before 7am @Kay00in fact, I can’t imagine doing anything remotely useful before 7am.

EveInEden · 20/04/2025 22:51

I thought the new trend was to ditch the 5am club? I used to be up at 0445 to get to work earlier to pick DD up after school. Now I struggle to be up before 0730. Sleep is important.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 20/04/2025 22:57

No, 6 I can do fine, but 5 would mean no evening wouldn’t it.

Haha, if I'm honest I look pretty rough even after the third outfit change. At 5am I'm always freezing so I throw on lots of jumpers to motivate myself to venture outside.

TyotyaKlava · 20/04/2025 22:58

Im a morning person, usually get up at 5.30 am go to the gym for a run. At weekends it’s more like 6-6.30 am. When im back from the gym its still quite early and I still have a whole day ahead

Strawberrycupcakes · 20/04/2025 23:08

I love the idea of it . but in reality the kids supersonic hearing would mean at least 2 of them would hear me get up and they would get up too so I’d get nothing done and no peace and quiet.
Also I could go to bed earlier but my husband would waken me when he comes to bed at midnight.
I’d be chronically tired all the time.

HowManyDucks · 21/04/2025 02:41

I'm already up 😅 I have a 1 year old I cosleep with. We've been in bed since 7:30pm and now I have 3 1/2 hours to do some work, exercise, put some washing away and have time to myself before she wakes up. Before kids I was up at 4:30 every day and loved it - I used to go for a run, clean, meal prep, and have a lovely long shower before work

Tbrh · 21/04/2025 02:48

I'd die if I tried this. Try and get into your natural circadian rhythm, change your light bulbs, reduce or eliminate blue light etc.

Strokethefurrywall · 21/04/2025 02:58

Just need to append to my post - I live in a hot country so sun rises between 5.30am and 6.30am all year round, and kids are dropped off at school by 7.20am latest.
5.30am is a grand hour to wake but we’re all asleep by 9pm. None of us are night owls!

GarlicSmile · 21/04/2025 03:17

I've always been a night owl. These days, my circadian rhythm's totally screwed and I'm often still up at 5am. In the past, I had a couple of jobs that started painfully early so would be out of the house by 5:30am. I went to bed around 11-ish and caught up at the weekend. Commuting on the early Tube's nice! Calmer, cleaner, and a very different demographic.

I really love that time of day. Even now, when I haven't got to be anywhere and am, in fact, just winding down, I go outside just to breathe morning-fresh air and listen to the birds going bonkers. Much as I enjoy it, I do prefer my mornings as part of an active night - didn't like getting up with the alarm before dawn!

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 21/04/2025 03:20

I try not to stay up that late any more.

Getoutasearlyasyoucan · 21/04/2025 03:24

I do, I get up at 5am and the time is unapologetically for me. I shower, meditate, then DH walks me to yoga at 5.45. It’s our 20 minutes just to natter before the noise of the day kicks in. He gets home before the teens get up, and I carry on to yoga, getting home at 8am and starting work at 8.30am. If I didn’t get up at 5am I’d lose my exercise time which I need mentally and physically, and that time with DH.
I’m in bed by 10pm but have never been a night owl, always an early riser.

xanthomelana · 21/04/2025 04:17

My alarm goes off at 3:30 for work and I’m up by 3:40. I don’t know what everyone does at home but I’m creeping around so I don’t wake anyone, I can’t imagine getting up at that time to start cleaning or exercising at home. It’s hard in the winter and you do get used to it, even on my days off I naturally wake around 3:30-4:00 but I go back to sleep. Downside is I’m flagging by 1 o’clock and usually have to have a power nap to see me through the day so if I didn’t have to get up for work I wouldn’t do it because it always catches up on you at some point. I’ve been doing it for years and I can’t imagine getting up this early if I didn’t have to.

Happyhappyday · 21/04/2025 04:37

I WFH full time but I bloody love starting at 6:15. I can plow through most of my days work before anyone else has even logged on to bother me at 8:30/9.

What do you actually do for fun and enjoyment?

Caspianberg · 21/04/2025 06:07

Yes I’m often up by 5am
Also overseas. Nursery and school starts at 7.30am, so everyone is up and out early. Need to leave by 7.15am latest to drive.

I usually spend 5-6am having tea and starting on work stuff. Ds is only at kindergarten until lunchtime so I really benefit from that hour until 6.15am.
6.15-7.15am getting ready, Ds up and ready, laundry on. Our house

I am then back home by 8am. And work again 8-12.

Today is bank holiday . I have been up since 5.30am still. Had a tea, unloaded dishwasher whilst tea brewed. Laundry on ( bedding from guests that left yesterday), read some kindle. Now a bit of news. It’s 7am now and Ds has just woken. So if I didn’t get up early I wouldn’t really ever have quite time to read or relax. We have somewhere to be by 9am so the rest of the morning will be getting us al ready and breakfast, driving there. Then out. Will get some gardening done this afternoon hopefully.
I go to bed when Ds does around 9pm. He often takes until 10pm to fall asleep

HopeForTheBest · 21/04/2025 06:43

As it's Easter Monday and I don't have to be anywhere but still woke up really early, I got up and cleaned the oven 😂

Twodogsisbetterthanone · 21/04/2025 06:49

I get up at 4am for work. I absolutely hate it. I have to be in bed and settling down by 8.30 as it takes me forever to get to sleep that early. I sometimes don’t get home until 7pm. You can imagine how crap that 1.5 hours before bedtime is, getting dinner done, housework done, feeding the pets. 😫

LaurieFairyCake · 21/04/2025 06:50

I wake naturally then. I don’t go cleaning or tidying but I just drink coffee and read in the peace and quiet.

Getoutasearlyasyoucan · 21/04/2025 06:56

Wow @XDownwiththissortofthingX a bit harsh? I love yoga and so getting up at 5am means I start my day doing something I enjoy. And then all the other normal stuff - time with friends, hanging out with the kids, cooking, reading, beach walks etc - still happens after work and during weekends. I’m not sure why you think those things can’t be done during weekends and evenings?

Lampzade · 21/04/2025 06:58

I have always woken up about 4:30 am. I am usually in bed by 10pm
This is the only time that I can think clearly . I do 45 mins exercise .I then spend half an hour on admin. Have a shower and by 6:30am, I am done . I have done this for many years .
i even wake up early when I am on holiday .
When my children were very young waking up early kept me sane as it was the only time I had for myself

WithOnlyTheMemories · 21/04/2025 07:06

My friend gets up at 5am with her husband. They spend time together and exercise and do housework/meal prep before their kids get up. It sounds like hell to me but she swears by it. She's a very intense, full-on and energetic person though so it suits her personality.

I get up just after 6 because that's when my youngest shouts on me.Naturally I'd probably sleep until about 7.

midlifemumma · 21/04/2025 07:10

I get up at 5, it’s a recent thing and I love it.

We have a very busy household with 6 children ranging from adult to toddler. I struggled with PND following my last two births and desperately missed time to myself to just be peaceful. I also was finding it very hard to exercise and was unhappy with my weight. I now get up at 5, do a home workout and then meet a good friend at 6 for a dog walk. I am back before 7 in time for a coffee before the children wake up.

For me, joining the 5am club has been transformational, I feel so much better in myself both mentally and physically. I find I need to be in bed by 9:30pm but I don’t mind that. Good luck!

Oh dear God no. Shock 5.00am is the middle of the night.

A comfortable waking up time for me is 8.00am to 8.30am. If I get up at 7am or earlier I feel tired and fatigued during the day. I don't 'wake up' as the day goes on, I just feel perma tired all day.

Do you not work or have later working hours? Most people have to wake around 7 or earlier for work. I’m up at 5 or half 5, but I have a young toddler so we are up for a while before I take her to nursery and start work.
