I was listening to an updated radio podcast from Misha Glenny on rare earths.

Ukraine is c. 0.1% of global land area but is estimated to have 10% of rare earths needed for smartphones, lithium batteries etc. Hence the proposed minerals deal Trump was trying to strongarm Zelensky into. It's either them or china that will get it. You'd think the capture of 2 Chinese soldiers in Ukraine would persuade a self interested USA into backing Ukraine wouldn't you?
