King Donald has bigly new tariffs, First Lady Elmo turns out to be ballot box poison and 'Pick Me Girl' Vance is a meanie to the EU.

(But at least the penguins on the Heard and McDonald Islands are wearing suits)

As an American citizen that goes in and out regularly, I've never been given a particularly hard time (white, obviously fairly well-to-do, non-threatening) but I will say that I've thought for a long time the experience at border control is almost completely dependent on how the individual staff member approaches their job. In the past, some of them were perfectly fine and some were clearly cosplaying semi-fascist militaristic pricks. I shudder to imagine how their number will increase in this regime.

They used to pretty universally say, Welcome Home, which always made me feel a bit teary. These days they're more likely to regard you with suspicion for having left the country in the first place, and I found that during the Biden years too.

I remember transiting through LA with young children, we all had come down with stomach bugs on the aeroplane and we smelled mediaeval. The staff were were quite nice to us.

Incidentally, more then once I've been pulled aside at Heathrow and questioned, because I was a lone man travelling with children (I know this because I asked why I was being questioned and that's what I was told )

I was once locked up by UK customs on arrival back from the US
(I'd not moved my ILR into my new passport)

Every moment of those hours is seared into my brain.

That's a mistake you make once!!

It's not a particularly comprehensive medical report. A lot of normals on it. What is normal? Normal for a human, a baby, a young adult or a pensioner? Is normal for a pensioner good enough for such a responsible job?
Did they take his BP when he was asleep? How long had he been still for before they took it? Why mention 99% on room air? Had he been on oxygen prior to this being taken?

I don't think it's worth the paper it was written on.

99% on room air is a standard way of reporting isn’t it? It doesn’t leap out as odd and I wouldn’t necessarily expect that to be abnormal in him anyway.

His tiny hands are typing about tariffs again. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in to the water...

There goes the bond markets again

One minute he's claiming that he's 'always had a great relationship' with Xi, and the next, China is mean and disrespecting the American people...

Apparently he couldn't remember calling Zelensky a dictator..

I think he needs a second opinion on his cognitive ability.

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/04/2025 22:44

Having read the report I can’t see any mention of Trump’s soul.

perhaps he misheard when the doctor called him an asshole.

Igotjelly · 13/04/2025 22:56

I’m genuinely confused, are smartphones etc no longer exempt from tariffs or are they still exempt?

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/04/2025 23:02

I think they're subject to 20% tariff, while the rest of the Chinese imports are subject to 100%+.

Igotjelly · 13/04/2025 23:20

It’s honestly no wonder consumers, businesses and trading partners don’t know whether they’re coming or going.

logicisall · 13/04/2025 23:25

Rather than follow the news as it happens, I think I'll be better off just checking it once a week. Yes tariffs, no tariffs, higher tariffs, lower tariffs. I'm getting desensitised to the batshit actions of the Trump administration. And I'm not looking at my SIPP for a month!

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/04/2025 23:47

You may just be better checking it when you need it.You could check it once a week and it would still have changed by the time you buy something online.

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/04/2025 23:56

LMFAO at the summary mentioning Trump’s frequent golfing victories keeping him healthy.

Everyone who can will be backing away slowly and so mr trump will learn about soft power the hard way.

logicisall · 14/04/2025 08:57

Ahhh, Monday!
Trump said that electronics are not exempt and that he will announce new levies today.

SerendipityJane · 14/04/2025 09:20

Thing is China doesn’t have an electorate to placate

... and Trump is acting as if he doesn't either. And he's right.

Well written Telegraph article: 'China digs in after trade war shock'. It's not going to be rosey in China either.

I'm disappointed, to be honest.

A much better strategy would be to plant petabytes of totally bogus "data" on devices and let Musks Mob loose on that.

And even if they aren't doing that, they just need to suggest they are to totally fuck US intelligence (if that isn't an oxymoron) for the time being.
