Poppadom etiquette

I am curious as to the etiquette of sharing poppadoms in a group meal.

a) Do you see a pile and break a piece off the top one and then others do the same

b) karate chop through all the poppadoms then take pieces when you want

c) take a whole poppadom and break into pieces on your own side plate so you have a pile of poppadom

I am option A and was flabbergasted at seeing C on Saturday.

There is nothing more satisfying than karate chopping a pile of poppadoms 😁

applegrumbling · 31/03/2025 18:03

I’ve never seen anyone do anything except C. You’re the weird one OP, sorry.

TheSixQuarks · 31/03/2025 18:04

B with family. C with more polite friends.

I have no idea…

BUT

‘Poppadom Etiquette’ is a fantastic band name! Smile I’m almost tempted to start one just to utilise it!!!

Alwaysoneoddsock · 31/03/2025 18:05

C for hygiene reasons. People don’t wash their hands before they eat and then they touch my food 🤮

WheresYourSnickers · 31/03/2025 18:05

commutemovequeries · 31/03/2025 18:01

I’m C but B reminded me of Tim Key and ‘shall I be mother?’ (For for any Off Menu fans)

Exactly what I was going to say 😁
Karate chop / shall I be mother ... I only ever heard on Off Menu.

C all the way

Ukholidaysaregreat · 31/03/2025 18:05

😂😂😂love this.

ItsCalledAConversation · 31/03/2025 18:06

I am with you OP (I’m an A) and am flabbergasted at the amount of Cs on here.

LittleGreenDuck · 31/03/2025 18:07

C, obviously. Anything else is madness.

Letstheriveranswer · 31/03/2025 18:07

If there is less than 1 each other there are only 2 at the table then probably A) and ensuring I only touch my own half

But I think C) is fine as long as there is 1 each, and more hygienic. Put it on your own plate and then break it up from there.

B) is just rude!

Megifer · 31/03/2025 18:07

C

I don't want a poppadom someone else has fingered.

Simplepink · 31/03/2025 18:08

No one does C in Bradford - must be a southern thing

doodahdayy · 31/03/2025 18:08

C. Stops gannets taking more than their fair share

TwiceAsLongAsHalfOfIt · 31/03/2025 18:09

C. I don't want other people's fingers on my poppadoms. Only exception would be my children. But I have taught them good hygiene and to take their own, not touch other people's food.

reluctantbrit · 31/03/2025 18:09

A if I am with DH or maybe very good friends I also share other meals with

C if I am out with colleagues or some social function

Hayley1256 · 31/03/2025 18:09

C, I don't want other people's germs

Saltedcarameltiramisucheesecake · 31/03/2025 18:09

The older I get, the less I enjoy a sharing type meal.
DH always offers a taste of his dessert, because he wants a taste of mine ( I almost always choose the best one). It's always a no, I just want the whole thing to myself, thanks. 😋

Wigtopia · 31/03/2025 18:09

There is a close group of friends i always end up in curry houses with if we ever eat out. We always karate chop for comedic value 🤭

but if eating with anyone other than them, I would take my lead from others at the table as I know I’m an animal 🤭

Orwellsunshine · 31/03/2025 18:10

I’m an A

LegoTherapy · 31/03/2025 18:10

Sharing???

Livpool · 31/03/2025 18:10

I’d do C - if I liked poppadoms. You can mine OP 😂

minnienono · 31/03/2025 18:11

C for a group meal, I don’t want to touch other people’s food. For just my direct family it’s dive in as sone eat more than others

TheSmallAssassin · 31/03/2025 18:12

We usually order one poppadom per person (or a multiple of the people at the table), so it's pretty much always C. Who eats less than one poppadom?

Onlyvisiting · 31/03/2025 18:16

TheNightingalesStarling · 31/03/2025 18:02

C.

I don't like sharing food as I get worried about taking too much etc so often don't eat much.

(I'm ok with buffets and close family)

Yes! A sharing meal is my idea of hell. I don't want to spend my dinner doing mental gymnastics and calculations of how much of everything there is and how many people and making sure I don't take too much of any one thing.
I want to order the food I want and have my own plate and eat it. Simple.
Personally I think the only people who enjoy that kind of meal are the ones who would just take whatever they fancy without even noticing they have eaten way more than their appropriate % of something. 😆
