Poppadom etiquette

I am curious as to the etiquette of sharing poppadoms in a group meal.

a) Do you see a pile and break a piece off the top one and then others do the same

b) karate chop through all the poppadoms then take pieces when you want

c) take a whole poppadom and break into pieces on your own side plate so you have a pile of poppadom

I am option A and was flabbergasted at seeing C on Saturday.

A if with DH or family - I trust them to wash hands - otherwise C. I don't always want a whole poppadom, however, and don't want to get too full before the good stuff arrives.

Re naan, I want to share but not with DH as we have different tastes in naan.

Xmasbaby11 · 31/03/2025 18:32

C usually but A would be fine if others did it first. B I’ve never seen! I’m not too bothered about others touching my food in this case but just seems really dramatic.

kezzykate · 31/03/2025 18:32

C. I don’t like the idea of everyone touching my piece tbh

If you've ordered one each, it's C. If they're complimentary or you just order 'some' then it's A as there may not be enough to go round to do C. Unless you're a bunch of drunken miscreants out on a stag, it's not B.

Cucy · 31/03/2025 18:33

C

Not only is it more hygienic but there are only a certain amount per person.

You could have one person who is a fast eater and constantly going back for more and then someone who is a slower eater (or what I saw last week where the mum was feeding herself and 2 bubbly toddlers and the dad was just sat eating with no worries).

So it means everyone gets their fair share.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 31/03/2025 18:33

I'm with you OP - Option A every time.

But never take the last remaining piece.

ArtyFartyHippopotamus · 31/03/2025 18:33

Definitely option C . It’s more hygienic. I never trust other people’s hand washing habits.😑

35965a · 31/03/2025 18:34

One each. Spoon the chutney etc on to your own side plate. Therefore nobody is touching anyone’s food but their own, everyone gets an equal share and there’s no double dipping.

At home with family we just break off pieces as we go, I know my husband and kids wash their hands but don’t much trust others!

Thingamebobwotsit · 31/03/2025 18:34

(A) but I grew up with Indian family and that is how they ate them.

Same here.

Happy to break and share with immediate family but with anyone else I’d take 1 and eat just that.

Also happy to share a naan with family but not with anyone else.

PrettayGood · 31/03/2025 18:36

C. You presumably order according to numbers, ie 4 poppadoms for 4 etc.

SoScarletItWas · 31/03/2025 18:37

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 31/03/2025 18:33

I'm with you OP - Option A every time.

I’m ‘C’ all the way, not least because I’ve seen ‘A’ people break the last piece into ever-smaller shards to avoid being the person to take the last bit!

Papercup · 31/03/2025 18:38

A with DH and DC. C if with anyone else due to hygiene.

LasagneLasagne · 31/03/2025 18:38

C. Even at home. My DH is a fast eater, so I need to make sure I protect my share! He's always happy to hoover up any poppadoms (or part of) that I don't eat.

EverleyBros · 31/03/2025 18:38

Obviously C - in a group situation
(maybe A with partner, or very close family)
B is just wrong

That does indeed happen 🤣

Eldermilleniallyogii · 31/03/2025 18:41

You mean you are flabbergasted as someone put a whole popadom on their plate or everyone except you did?

chattyness · 31/03/2025 18:44

Definitely C I don't want to eat food someone else has touched in case they hadn't washed their hands after going to the loo, lots of people don't 😫

JustMyView13 · 31/03/2025 18:46

A) with loved ones
C) with work or friends

B) Never ever ever ok. I would leave the meal 🤣🤣

*Edit to add that there’s a specific snapping tekkers to use with A which means you only touch what you’re breaking off.

LittleBigHead · 31/03/2025 18:46

C if there's one each ordered.

I always worry about doing A and others being put off by the fact that I've handled the poppadom. C seems more polite.

OliveTree75 · 31/03/2025 18:49

Absolutely C. I want my own poppadom that nobody has touched

Pedallleur · 31/03/2025 18:50

And no way are any of you tearing my paratha or sharing it! You should have ordered one

SD1978 · 31/03/2025 18:51

C, and ensuring there is enough ordered for the group. A & B leads to unfair popadom distribution and would ruin my meal. One each, amd if there are spares, then it’s game on……if I took a small piece and you took a big pieces, I’d be annoyed. And I don’t know how clean your hands are…..

OliveTree75 · 31/03/2025 18:52

TheSixQuarks · 31/03/2025 18:24

Curious. For the people that don’t want eat something that someone else has touched, what happens when the naan comes along? Do you order one of those each too?

Very glad I trust my friends are hygienic.

We order one per couple and tear In half. Or with others would cut in half

Cheeseybiteforme · 31/03/2025 18:55

Wow, I did not expect so many Cs. I was just flabbergasted because I never knew that was what other people did, I really thought it was A, next time I will just do what everyone else does.
