❗️SBU Uncovers Hungarian Military Intelligence Network Operating in Ukraine

For the first time in Ukraine’s history, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has exposed a Hungarian military intelligence network engaged in espionage activities against the state.
The network’s mission was to gather intelligence on the military security of the Transcarpathian region, identify vulnerabilities in the area's ground and air defense systems, and assess the socio-political attitudes of local residentsβ€”specifically, their potential responses in the event of a Hungarian military incursion.
As part of a comprehensive operation in Transcarpathia, the SBU detained two agents linked to the Hungarian intelligence network. Both were under the supervision of a Hungarian military intelligence officer, whose identity has also been established.
The detainees have been formally charged with treason and are currently in custody. If convicted, they face life imprisonment.

Delegations from 35 countries and the Council of Europe have arrived in Lviv, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On Thursday, May 8, European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius arrived in Kyiv.... Later, the government press service reported on a meeting between Prime Minister Shmyhal and Kubilius, during which they discussed defense and technological cooperation.

The main Russian goal in the war against Ukraine is to keep dictator Vladimir Putin in power, said General Mikael Klesson, Chief of the Swedish Defense General Staff, during the Kyiv Security Forum.

Russia systematically uses β€œinformation alibis” to justify illegal strikes on Ukraine and avoid accountability, according to a new report by Global Rights Compliance.
The report highlights that Russian authorities, media, and bloggers often preemptively spread disinformation to shift blame to Ukraine before carrying out attacks. This tactic was used during the bombing of the Mariupol maternity hospital, the Kramatorsk railway station strike in 2022, the Olenivka prison attack, and the Kakhovka dam explosion in 2023. These coordinated narratives aim to discredit Ukraine and mask Russia’s responsibility on the global stage.

According to Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, from midnight to noon, Russia violated the ceasefire 734 times and launched 63 assault operations, 23 of which are still ongoing.
Russian forces carried out 586 attacks on Ukrainian positions, including 464 with heavy weapons.
Additionally, there were 176 drone strikes and 10 airstrikes using 16 guided bombs during this period.

πŸ’Ά Ukraine is considering pegging the hryvnia to the euro instead of the dollar.
Among the reasons for this decision, National Bank Governor Andriy Pyshnyi cited Ukraine’s potential accession to the European Union and the growing role of the EU in supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
He also noted that increased investment and consumer activity, driven by closer ties with Europe and economic normalization, will help accelerate economic growth over the next two years to between 3.7% and 3.9%.

With this move, the UK becomes the country that has sanctioned the largest number of vessels in Russia’s shadow fleet.

... Two agents have been arrested β€” a former serviceman and an ex-member of Ukraine’s Defense Forces. Both were handled by a career officer of Hungary’s military intelligence, whose identity has now also been established by the SBU.
One of the agents, a 40-year-old former soldier, was recruited in 2021 and placed on standby. In September 2024, he was activated by his handler and began collecting intelligence on Ukraine’s defenses, S-300 systems, troop losses, local police presence, and public morale.
The former servicewoman provided Hungarian intelligence with data on aircraft and helicopters in Zakarpattia region, as well as on defensive systems at the military base where she served.
Both suspects have been charged with high treason and are in custody. They face life imprisonment.

MissConductUS · 09/05/2025 10:38

You would certainly need terminal GPS guidance to reliably hit a hard target with the unitary warhead round. The fact that the Ukrainians are hitting hard targets like the example in Kursk indicates that the Russians don't have local jamming covering all high value targets. A lot of the area jamming units have probably been pulled back into Russia to defend high value targets from Ukraine's long range drones.

The CEP on inertial guidance depends on the flight time, since the errors are cumulative. A five-minute flight time yields a CEP of roughly 45 meters on internal guidance. In addition to the unitary warhead round, there's a missile (the M26) that carries 644 submunitions (aka cluster bombs) that spread over a much larger area, and would still be effective on inertial guidance.

I'm sure there is some degradation going on due to EW, but HIMARS are still having an effect on the battlefield.

If either India or Pakistan used nuclear arsenal against each other, what are the implications for the Ukrainian conflict? Are there any? Would Putin be tempted to escalate? Or not because too close to home, too contaminated land is no use to him…

Any one else feeling that global conflict is escalating rapidly. What a terrible time for the American president to turn away from US historical role of the world’s policeman.

And to top it all off, Starmer, Macron, Merz and Tusk arrived in Kyiv this morning. Let’s hope that Putin will refrain from drone or missile attacks today.

UN: April 2025 Sees Highest Civilian Casualties in Ukraine Since September 2024
April 2025 marked the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since September 2024, according to the latest monthly report by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine (HRMMU).
The report records at least 209 civilians killed and 1,146 injured in April as a result of intensified Russian attacks. HRMMU Head Danielle Bell attributed the sharp rise in casualties to Russia’s widespread use of ballistic missiles targeting major cities.
The UN noted that this pattern of urban attacks continued into May, with new missile and cluster munition strikes reported in Kharkiv, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and Kyiv, again resulting in civilian deaths and injuries.
The report highlights the particularly high toll on children: at least 19 were killed and 78 injured in April aloneβ€”the highest monthly figure for child casualties since June 2022. Many of these attacks occurred at times and in places where families were gathered outdoors.
Additionally, 23% of all April casualties were attributed to short-range drone strikes near frontline areas. One of the deadliest incidents occurred on April 23 in Marhanets, Dnipropetrovsk region, where a drone strike on a bus carrying mining plant workers killed at least nine peopleβ€”eight of them womenβ€”and injured 58 others.
Between January and April 2025, 664 civilians were killed and 3,425 injured in Russian attacksβ€”a 59% increase compared to the same period in 2024, the report concluded.

Key Takeaways:

  • The Kremlin continues to seize on the Russian mythos of the Second World War ahead of Russia's May 9 Victory Day holiday to set informational conditions to justify a prolonged war in Ukraine and future aggression against NATO to Russian society.
  • Belousov explicitly identified large-scale Russian military reforms as preparations for a future conflict with NATO as Russian Security Council Chairperson Dmitry Medvedev threatened European countries that support Ukraine.
  • Russia claimed to have implemented its unilateral Victory Day ceasefire on May 8 and accused Ukraine of ceasefire violations even though Ukraine did not officially and publicly agree to Russia's ceasefire. Russia's unilateral Victory Day ceasefire and accusations of violations continue to demonstrate the necessity that any ceasefire or peace agreement be formally agreed to in advance by all parties and include robust monitoring mechanisms.
  • Ukrainian officials continue to highlight Ukraine's willingness to implement US President Donald Trump's desired 30-day ceasefire to precede peace talks.
  • The Kremlin is attempting to exploit its unilateral Victory Day ceasefire to blame Ukraine for the lack of progress toward a longer-term ceasefire and peace negotiations despite Russia's continued rejection of such a longer-term ceasefire.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and People's Republic of China (PRC) President Xi Jinping conducted a series of bilateral engagements in Moscow on May 8, showcasing deeper Russian–Chinese cooperation and alignment.
  • The joint Russian–Chinese statement on May 8 referenced Putin's original aims in launching his full-scale invasion of Ukraine in an attempt to lend international support and legitimacy to Russia's goals and attempted justifications for the war.
  • The joint Russian–Chinese statement supported Putin's proposed Eurasian security architecture and Russia's ongoing efforts to create a Russia-dominated alternative, anti-Western bloc.
  • The United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine’s (UN HRMMU) reported that Ukrainian civilian casualties have significantly increased between 2024 and 2025.
  • The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada ratified the US-Ukrainian bilateral economic partnership agreement on May 8.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast and near Toretsk. Russian forces recently advanced in Kursk and Sumy oblasts and near Kupyansk, Borova, Toretsk, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka.

Key Takeaways:

  • US President Donald Trump explicitly called for a longer-term ceasefire in Ukraine that would precede peace negotiations β€” a sequence that Ukraine has consistently supported and that Russia has consistently rejected.
  • Ukrainian resistance with Western support has prevented Russian forces from seizing any of their self-identified objectives in Ukraine over the past year, depriving Russian President Vladimir Putin of significant battlefield successes to celebrate on Victory Day.
  • The only recent military operation that Putin featured on Victory Day was the repulsion of the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Oblast.
  • Russian officials highlighted technological adaptations and innovations that Russian forces have integrated in Ukraine over the last three years during national and regional Victory Day celebrations.
  • The Kremlin seized on Russia’s May 9 Victory Day celebrations to posture itself as having broad international support three years into its invasion of Ukraine and especially highlighted Russia’s growing partnerships with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and North Korea.
  • Putin used the Victory Day holiday to promote the development of a civic Russian identity at odds with Russian ultranationalist efforts to promote ethno-religious nationalism predicated on a Russian state mainly led by and comprised of ethnic Russians.
  • Delegations from 35 countries and the Council of Europe visited Lviv City on May 9 in celebration of Europe Day in Ukraine.
  • Ukraine’s European allies continue to support the Ukrainian military and defense industrial base (DIB).
  • Russian forces recently advanced in the Pokrovsk, Novopavlivka, Kurakhove, and Velyka Novosilka directions and in Zaporizhia Oblast, and Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast.
