Russians have struck Zaporizhzhia at least 13 times.
There is damage in various parts of the city, with several fires reported. A private house has been destroyed, and two people are believed to be under the rubble.

The latest Russian technology for protection against FPV drones involves a new approach. In addition to the giant β€œbarbecue grill,” the occupiers have added numerous metal β€œbushes” to the BMP-2, transforming the vehicle into a β€œporcupine.”
It seems the creators were inspired by tree branches, which often cause FPV drones to get stuck.

The European Commission has unveiled a roadmap to end the EU’s dependence on Russian energy.
β€œThanks to the REPowerEU plan, launched in May 2022, the EU has reduced the share of Russian gas imports from 45% to 19%. However, in 2024, Russian gas imports into the EU have increased again,” the report states.
The roadmap outlines a coordinated and safe phase-out of Russian oil, gas, and nuclear energy from EU markets. Member states are expected to prepare national plans by the end of 2025. Simultaneously, the EU will continue accelerating its energy transition and diversifying supplies to safeguard energy security and market stability.
Key proposals include:
▫️ Ending all imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027
▫️ Terminating spot contracts and banning new gas contracts with Russian suppliers by the end of 2025
▫️ Introducing new measures against Russia’s β€œshadow oil fleet”
▫️ Banning EU countries from purchasing Russian uranium and nuclear fuel; Euratom will stop approving new contracts
In June, the Commission will present legislative proposals to support the roadmap.
According to Politico, Hungarian European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi raised a procedural objection to the proposal just hours before its release. Varhelyi, appointed by Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n, did so despite his formal obligation to remain independent of national political interests.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ πŸͺ– The UK is secretly preparing for a possible Russian attack and is updating its emergency response plans, according to The Telegraph.
Government officials have been asked to revise two-decade-old contingency plans that would put the country on a wartime footing in case of an attack from the Kremlin.
A classified document will outline how the government would respond to a declaration of war. This includes the evacuation of the Cabinet and the Royal Family to bunkers, managing public broadcasting, and stockpiling resources. The updated secret β€œHomeland Defence Plan” will define the government’s strategy for the first days following a potential strike on British soil by a hostile foreign power.
Experts have highlighted key vulnerabilities, such as gas terminals, underwater internet cables, nuclear power stations, and critical transport hubs. The Cabinet has already considered scenarios involving simultaneous missile strikes and cyberattacks on this infrastructure.
β–ͺ️Russian officials have repeatedly threatened the UK with direct attacks over its support for Ukraine. Last month, for the first time, ministers officially recognised Russia as a national security threat.

China and Russia will resume talks on the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline this week, Bloomberg reports.
The negotiations are expected to take place during Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s visit to Moscow, where he is scheduled to meet with Vladimir Putin.
Sources suggest Beijing may now be open to discussing a higher gas priceβ€”somewhere between Russia’s domestic rate and the current tariff for gas supplied through the existing Power of Siberia pipeline. China is also pushing for a direct route that bypasses Mongolia.
The Power of Siberia 2 pipeline would enable Russia to supply an additional 50 billion cubic meters of gas annually, allowing China to reduce its dependence on more expensive liquefied natural gas.
However, talks on the project have dragged on for years, and sources say a final agreement is unlikely to be signed during this visit.

Russia claims to have shot down 524 drones, 5 Neptune missiles, 6 JDAM bombs, and 2 HIMARS rounds in a single day

Of course they did. πŸ˜‚

JDAMs are gravity bombs with fins for steering them to target. They fall onto their target and even a direct hit is unlikely to detonate them. HIMARS rounds are ballistic, travel at mach 2.5 and have a tiny radar cross section as seen from the target, so very unlikely to have been intercepted. The Russians have reportedly stripped air defenses from the area around Ukraine to protect Moscow for the parade, making the JDAM and HIMARS interceptions even less likely.

Happy VE Day to all of my friends in Europe and a salute to the British armed forces, especially the BA troops who served in ODS (Op Granby).

To be fair I don't think they did shoot them down as such. Russia has invested heavily in electronic warfare and has become adept at jamming western weapons reliant on GPS such as HIMARS and JDAM, they very rarely reach their target these days.

Many of the failures, including the HIMARS, have been due to their reliance on GPS

That article is almost a year old. The Ukrainians have successfully destroyed much of Russia's wide area, front line EW kit.

The problem with EW is that when it's activated, you are signaling the location of the jammer. That makes it very easy to target and eliminate it if your kill chain is fast enough. There are air to surface missiles like the AGM-88 designed specifically to do this, and Ukraine has received them for their F-16 fleet. While used primarily on active radar targets, the HARM has a "home on jamming" mode as well.

@MissConductUS

Justin Brock at RUSI, usually v reliable went a bit tangential in an online discussion about the F-47 project recrntly and ended up briefly talking about Ukraine and the impact of Russian EW.

He certainly was of the opinion the Russians were still managing to very much degrade GPS on the battlefield, and render some smart ordnance dumb.... I'll see if I can dig out a link to the interview later today.

notimagain · 09/05/2025 08:15

Just to add, you're right that individual jammers radiating can be targetted, the problem on the battlefield is that GPS is easily jammed with fairly simple kit and there are now lots of jammers, various, being carried around on the battlefield, far too many to engage with something like HARM. If reports are to be believed this seems to have had serious consequences for any ordnance that relies on GPS only.

Get off the battlefield and into the rear echelons and things might be more permissive, use weaponry that doesn't rely on GPS, especially for terminal guidance, and you might be in business again.

MissConductUS · 09/05/2025 09:29

Off the top of my head, I'm not sure about JDAMS, but HIMARS rounds have both GPS and inertial guidance capabilities. If the GPS guidance is lost, it fails over to the inertial system. So it's quite plausible that the round could fly out of the jamming radius and reestablish the more precise GPS guidance for the remainder of the flight.

Possibly, and inertial is fine for en-route but if a round needs GPS for terminal guidance it might be screwed again in the last few seconds of flight when it might well enter the area covered by any jammers organic/adjacent to the target.

I think Brock at RUSI was claiming Excaliber had been rendered pretty much ineffective to the point of effectively unuseable in the last year or so by the level of GPS jamming going on,.

Now TBF he's an aviation analyst so other Povs are welcome and probably equally valid.
