But highly appropriate anyway.

There's a reason a lot of these people are cosy chums of Putin.

US pulls out of formal peace talks between Ukraine and Russia

The US government said it will no longer β€˜fly around the world at the drop of a hat’ for meetings

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/world/us-withdraws-ukraine-russia-peace-talks-b1225632.html

dibly · 02/05/2025 14:12

More supportive noises coming from the US in terms of Ukraine, finally. I had started to soften a little towards Trump after seeing him with Zelenskyy at the Vatican last week, but then saw his 100 day speech, relishing the video of people marched, heads down, in El Salvador, and the hatred came rushing back.

The UK reform election results are worrying, as is the rise of right wing and probably Russian boys and trolls spreading mis and disinformation about UK politics on social media. I believe that the cabinet office are looking at this, but it’s a real concern.

America signing mineral deals with Ukraine and then simultaneously approving $50 million sale of arms to Ukraine whilst dropping out of peace talks with Russia. Vance also said they’re a far way off from peace. What’s going on, is it that they realised they can profit from arms sales to Ukraine and the war continuing?

Igotjelly · 02/05/2025 15:24

I haven’t seen them saying they’re officially dropping out of peace talks, anyone able to link?

The big American defense contractors are back ordered for years on almost everything Ukraine might want to buy, so I don't think that Trump is changing course in hopes of keeping them off the dole.

I think that he's realized that Putin won't move towards meaningful negotiations until he feels more pain, which means shoring up Ukraine's position. He should have been pulling this lever all along. He needs to raise the cost for Russia and he's signaling that he's ready to do so.

AnnaBalfour · 02/05/2025 15:35

That makes sense and seeing Trump finally apply pressure to Russia will be a joy.

MissConductUS · 02/05/2025 15:43

notimagain · 02/05/2025 11:15

Sadly that's true.

You can't ignore the massive US contribution by both their armed forces and their industry to victory, especially in WW2, but it sure as hell was a team effort...

I think that Trump was referring to the overall size of the US contribution, not relative to population. It absolutely was a team effort, and the US homeland escaped largely unscathed, which allowed the US to support post war reconstruction in Europe.

Key Takeaways:

  • The United States and Ukraine published additional information about their April 30 bilateral economic partnership agreement.
  • US Special Envoy to Ukraine Keith Kellogg recently reaffirmed that Ukrainian officials remain committed to resolving the war in Ukraine, despite ongoing Russian refusals to accept US President Donald Trump’s repeated proposals for a general ceasefire in pursuit of lasting peace in Ukraine.
  • Russia continues to reject US and European proposals to deploy Western peacekeeping forces to Ukraine and calls for Russia to make territorial concessions in pursuit of a lasting peace in Ukraine, signaling the Kremlin's unyielding negotiating position.
  • Russian forces recently advanced in Sumy Oblast and near Lyman, Siversk, Pokrovsk, and Kurakhove.

And speaking of amplifying the pressure on Russia,

Trump Ally Lindsey Graham Pushes Russia Crackdown - South Carolina senator builds support for new sanctions on Moscow and tariffs on countries that buy Russia’s oil

Graham is a very senior Republican senator and former USAF officer. He clearly has Trump's support for this bill and can get it passed in short order. Russia's oil revenues are already down 25% from the beginning of the year just due to the price drop. This would force them down even lower.

It's lovely to see the pro-Ukraine wing of the Republican party emerge from the shadows. I think Putin has overplayed his hand with Trump and is now on his shit naughty list.

I think myself it's ego more than money.

Trump's ego means he will always choose himself over any material advantage (as seen by the tariff debacle) and the way in the first administration he sacked people who were competent.

He came sailing in saying he was going to bring peace. But that ship is foundering on the fact that Putin is taking ground and doesn't want peace. Trump seems likely to be personally offended that he can't be the saviour and perhaps gain the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sure the US can make money on the arms sales. But don't underestimate the personal pride of a profoundly egotistical man.

The EU and the U.S. aim to coordinate new sanctions packages against the Russian Federation, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-NoΓ«l Barrot.
In an interview with AFP, Barrot referred to the initiative of U.S. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who proposed β€œdevastating” sanctions against Russia and countries that trade with it. After meeting with Senator Marco Rubio and other U.S. lawmakers, Barrot emphasized that the EU is working to align its actions with Washington.

According to law enforcement officials, the man had lived in Greece for many years and was recruited in the fall of 2024 by a compatriot linked to the GRU. The investigation revealed that he had been monitoring military facilities in the region for at least six months. His mobile phone contained photos of equipment and descriptions of cargo, including those destined for Ukraine. The materials were sent to his handler via encrypted communication channels.

Putin may temporarily scale back his war goals in Ukraine to play by U.S. rules, according to CNN, citing intelligence sources.
The Russian leader faces pressure not only from domestic economic challenges but also from an increasingly aggressive Trump administration threatening new sanctions.
β€œIt seems to me he [Putin] might be thinking β€” I don’t want to say in less ambitious terms β€” but rather focusing on more achievable near-term objectives,” a source told the outlet.
Intelligence officials agree that Moscow appears ready to limit its goals to accommodate Washington. However, they stress that Russia has not abandoned its maximalist military ambitions.
β€œPutin’s thinking has evolved. He believes he has a favorable American president who doesn’t really understand what he’s doing and is more focused on short-term wins,” said Jason Crow, a member of the U.S. House Intelligence Committee.

❗️The US State Department has approved a $310.5 million package for training and support for Ukraine’s F-16s.
The package includes:
πŸ”΄modification and modernization of the aircraft;
πŸ”΄training for personnel on operation, maintenance, and combat readiness;
πŸ”΄spare parts and consumables;
πŸ”΄ground support equipment;
πŸ”΄delivery and support of classified and unclassified software, among other items.

Zelensky reports on the meeting of the Supreme Command, where the production of Ukrainian ballistic weapons was discussed.
β€œThe task is to accelerate the creation of Ukrainian ballistic missiles as much as possible. Our long-range capabilities are a clear and effective guarantee of Ukraine’s security,” the President stated.
In addition, Zelensky held a separate meeting on the Ukrainian fleet of F-16 fighter jets.
The discussion focused on F-16s already in Ukraine, those expected to arrive soon, and solutions for the effective training and deployment of Ukrainian air forces.

I just have to post this, even tho it's not directly Ukraine-related.

Secretary Marco Rubio

@SecRubio

Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That’s not democracyβ€”it’s tyranny in disguise. What is truly extremist is not the popular AfDβ€”which took second in the recent electionβ€”but rather the establishment’s deadly open border immigration policies that the AfD opposes. Germany should reverse course.

This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our Constitution & the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.

That last sentence!

PerkingFaintly · 03/05/2025 10:46

Rubio is going to be hearing that one back at him for the next decade – about his own country.

I say this with great sadness.

With regard to Z saying he can’t guarantee the safety of world leaders at the May procession in Russia, is he implying that it will be actively targeted by Ukraine?

I reckon he's playing mind games aka dabbling in a bit of Psyops..(Russians have been fond enough of it ovet the years).

Just get it into the heads of those attending such events that Ukraine might even have considered an attack (even if they haven't) would be enough to get a few nerves jangling.

Actively probably not. If my very hazy memory serves me right ukrainian drones have buzzed Moscow and even attacked a building once, but to actively attack world leaders would be an extremely alienating thing to do. He won't.
