Has your local Morrison's gone downhill ?

Likeagreatcardi · 22/03/2025 10:01

We've stopped shopping in our local one as it seems to have gone downhill . By that I mean somehow soulless , a bit grubby , often less stock , and everyone seems unhappy there.
What's yours like ?

Just checking username

I have worked for Morrisons for 20 years so I’ll add my 2p in
Yes, working at Morrisons is becoming more and more chaotic as things literally change overnight. Policies and procedures are like pissing In the wind at the minute.
yes, nights crew have been taken away so we not have teams come in at 5 am to work deliveries… we open at 7 so absolutely not enough time to clear the shop floor and every single member of staff will agree with you!
Yes, manned tills are being replaced with self serve tills, just like any other high street shop… no, we haven’t made any one redundant but our recruitment has gone down to accommodate the saving in manpower.
yes, we now keep the lighting and heating low for “environmental” reasons, it’s also worth noting it’s probably cheaper from a bills point of view
when it’s gone it’s gone (AKA WIGIG) is actually really popular even if if does look like a jumble sale crossed with Lidl. It’s barely priced because in the crossover over from nights to days, head office didn’t think about the pricing aspect which was predominately done on nights…. If something now isn’t being put out until past 10 am there is no one to price until 4 am the next morning.
happy to answer anything If I can. I don't actually work on the shop floor but deal with everyone who actually does

TheodoraCrumpet · 22/03/2025 19:05

I haven't done a big shop in ours for years, and it's the only large supermarket for miles. I get deliveries from other stores. I pop in from time to time, and it doesn't seem as bad as some of the shops being described here, but it ain't what it used to be. They haven't locked up the alcohol yet. It's a Corner of Crap rather than an aisle of shite here. There are definitely rats, according to environmental health and the evidence of my own eyes.

Needmorelego · 22/03/2025 19:13

@MorrisonsBitch so how much are those pastel coloured toasters and matching kettles in the WIGIG (love that 😂) section....?

Seymour5 · 22/03/2025 20:17

Ours isn’t bad, but there are several other supermarkets within a few minutes drive, so the competition is tough. Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Asda, Aldi, Home Bargains and B&M. I’m retired, so I have time to visit different shops for specific items.

Up til now, I’ve had to go into town to M&S for my preferred yogurt, although Waitrose (there isn’t one nearby) and some branches of Asda sell it, just not the nearest one. Found out today it’s on sale in Morrison’s and got the last two tubs, and at £2 its 50p cheaper than M&S. Isey Skyr Baked Apple.

Well the roof of the carpark that Morrisons own (which is located above the Sutton branch) caved in. It's now been closed for about 9 months so far. Not sure if they are actually doing anything to sort it out which is a shame as I liked that branch. The roof had been leaking and gradually getting worse over at least the last 8 years, so it's no surprise that it happened. They probably had more buckets catching water than what was in stock at the local B&Q (which is also now closed).

Occasionalcyclist · 24/03/2025 13:12

Morrisons has announced the closure of some stores and cafes
So it does seem to be in considerable trouble.
Very sorry for the staff whose jobs will be at risk.

The exterior sign of a Morrisons supermarket, white text with a yellow corn logo, on brick wall

Morrisons to shut 52 cafes and 17 stores

The closures are expected to take place over the next few months, leaving hundreds of jobs at risk.

Was about to come back to my thread and mention I've just read this !
I guess most of us saw it coming . A real shame.

The stores that are closing are convenience stores, the McColls ones they purchased when they went into administration. As for counters etc closing I’m surprised they stayed open as long as they have because every other supermarket scrapped them ages ago.

Moveoverdarlin · 24/03/2025 14:11

I’ve always thought Morrison’s was a bit backward compared to other supermarkets.

Darkclothes · 24/03/2025 14:17

@MorrisonsBitch Do you know if they have any plans to bring in those hand held, self-scan things? To scan as you shop?

Also, why are there fundraising/charity people that you need to maneuver around to get out of the shop? They aren't outside, but right there in the store as you come out of the tills! I offered one £2 yesterday, but they wouldn't take cash and only wanted me to sign up to a monthly payment! No thanks.

fussychica · 24/03/2025 14:44

Our cafe is on the list. Despite using the store regularly I've never been in the cafe, looks so unappealing so not surprised.

HermioneWeasley · 24/03/2025 15:29

Very sad news for the staff. None of this is their fault.

I really avoid it - it is famous for the prices being wrong and the queue for the customer service desk being very very long - so you calculate whether it's worth your time for the refund on overpaid items.

I went this weekend to check out a particular offer and bought a few items - out of 21 items 3 of the prices were incorrect - 2 were 'more' offers which did not come off - probably out of date tickets (usually is).

The cafe has two parts - at the front is a coffee shop style cafe which now has a random pile of items (as mentioned previously - aisle of tat style) with no prices and you have to walk past that to get to the actual cafe.

I had to fight my way to the shelves past a half unloaded trolley with cardboard on the floor and boxes next to the shelf. The assistant watched me - I think they were slightly concerned I was going to do myself damage as I twisted round the obstacles (who needs tough mudder!)

The tills are a nightmare of short staffing - almost totally self service but requiring the one member of staff to dash like a bleep test from one area to another.

At the end I remembered why I don't go there. I will not miss it if it folds.

lovepotionnumbernine · 24/03/2025 16:00

I haven’t been in there since they tried to charge me 50p for a paper bag.

Normallynumb · 24/03/2025 16:02

I’ve just seen on the news, they are closing the deli and pizza counters and closing lots of stores.
I’ve never been to a Morrisons so can’t add to comments

PuppyMonkey · 24/03/2025 16:23

Just checked and my local store’s cafe isn’t on the list. I was in there yesterday and honestly, it was a different shop to the ones described in this thread. Lovely and bright, busy, no aisle of shite, friendly staff. I’ll be so sad if it gets neglected and ends up being run down or closing.Sad

Absolutely no idea sorry! I haven’t looked at them so no idea on the price! But they look decent from a distant

spanieleyes · 24/03/2025 16:34

Morrisons has definitely gone downhill. It was always the “ supermarket of choice” , my dad knew William Morrison and my aunt was a store manager so we had family ties! But it is now a mess, stock levels are low and too many unbranded items!
William, and Ken, would be horrified !

So for the first bit I know that some stores did trial them but that was at least 2 years ago and I have heard nothing since. It would be so much better if they did bring this in. I will say that Morrisons are at least 3/5 years behind with technology though so what ever other supermarkets are doing, Morrisons will do about 5 years later
The second point I can actually answer up to a point. We have community champions who deal with various local events. We also have a central office booking system who deal with charities that come under GDPR so if they were taking details that’s a head office charity that pays to stand outside, if it’s a bucket collect where you throw a pound in, that’s a store level collection

The Morrisons in a town a few miles away is so lovely. I drive there rather than go to our local Sainsburys.

Thanks. I didn't think you'd actually know the price 😂
I do like Morrisons so it would be sad if it goes. Their in store baked sausage rolls are lovely. They used to do cheese and onion baps but I don't see those often now.
The whole retail world is just struggling really.

Boomer55 · 24/03/2025 16:52

Yes, they’ve never been brilliant, but now it’s dire. I no longer go in there.
