Has your local Morrison's gone downhill ?

We've stopped shopping in our local one as it seems to have gone downhill . By that I mean somehow soulless , a bit grubby , often less stock , and everyone seems unhappy there.
What's yours like ?

Yes, ours has been bad for ages. Very often the fruit and veg is low on stock.
More recent problems are that several tills have been taken out to make more self-service, and few of the tills that are left are manned, despite queues of people with trolleys. Also, hardly any of the self-service tills take cash and it isn't clearly labelled which ones will, so when they are busy and you are waiting in the queue to use them, you end up hovering in the middle getting in the way and waiting for a cash one to come free.
In the last year I have seen an increase in shelves being constantly stocked during shopping hours, even when the shop has just opened. Why don't staff rotas start a couple of hours before the doors open so they start the day fully stocked and customers don't have to navigate around them? Add to that, the click and collect staff zipping around. It's not a pleasant experience shopping there and seems really poorly managed.
Our Morrisons has a comment book near the exit, I frequently write in it...

DoodleDig · 22/03/2025 11:05

Plus points though are the More card, which I like, and the staff in my local one are very nice and friendly.

Darkclothes · 22/03/2025 11:05

'Aisle of Shite'- this made me laugh and will be my new term for it.

Someone up thread mentioned good knickers! I must remember to have a look next time, because I do need some. Any tops/dresses I've bought from there have been shitty polyester or didn't hang right and were returned.

The alcohol in ours isn't locked away! Just on regular shelves to help yourself to.

DataColour · 22/03/2025 11:06

It's our local supermarket and although feels a bit dated and dark in decor, it's popular and well used in our area. All the counters are open and I especially love the fish counter . They are miles better for fish than any other supermarket in my experience. Regularly get sea bream and sea bass from there and it's not expensive. Fresh pizza counter too. Lots of fresh bread as well. the self service tills are rubbish however.

madaffodil · 22/03/2025 11:08

I've shopped at Morrisons for years. Not any more. Our local store is well-run and clean & tidy, but the prices? Ye Gods. They have skyrocketed over the last 18 months. We used to often get their ready meals for convenience (multiple family members all working different hours so difficult to all eat together) but the ready meals are nowhere near the quality they used to be and have pretty much doubled in price at the same time. They used to have a fantastic selection of garden plants & shrubs all year round. The plants aren't worth bothering with these days.

We shop at Sainsburys, Co-Op, Aldi and Lidl now, with the occasional foray into Tesco as well. All of their prices are way more competitive than Morrisons.

PuppyMonkey · 22/03/2025 11:10

My local one is still lovely. Haven’t noticed anything like an aisle of shite. Yet. Confused

If you want free Morrisons deliveries sign up to Amazon Prime, or you can do Iceland if you prefer.

TotallyKerplunked · 22/03/2025 11:14

Ours is dark and dingy as well but the main issue is the pricing not matching up when you scan stuff and them putting the right type but wrong sized items under an offer banner. You have to study your receipt like a hawk and there's always a queue at customer service querying prices, I've even gone back round the store and double checked my receipt. I don't shop there anymore, even though it's so close as I don't like being ripped off.

They're doing their bit to keep us mentally exercised to ward of cognitive decline. Some people do crosswords and sudoku, I go to Morrisons.

lavenderlou · 22/03/2025 11:17

I have one that I visit occasionally. Last couple of times I was there it was definitely more shabby. The weirdest thing was that at exactly 4.30 each time they dimmed the lighting so you could barely see any of the products!

lavenderlou · 22/03/2025 11:19

Another thing is that the self-service tills don't have their own designated staff member, so whenever anyone needs help (every 30 seconds!) someone has to dash over from another area. The staff always seem stressed and I can't blame them.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 22/03/2025 11:23

My local one has been shut for quite a few months because I think the carpark ceiling was falling in or something. No sign of it reopening.

ItsaMeMummio · 22/03/2025 11:24

Oh yes very much this.

And my pet gripe about Morrisons is the absolute jumble sale of clutter in the entrance! Every Morrisons I ever go to is the same. Big boxes of random special offer stuff making this weird bottle neck at the entrance.

Badbadbunny · 22/03/2025 11:25

Yup, we used to go to a few quite regularly, our local one went downhill first and we stopped going, but the others were OK. Then one of the others we used on a regular route to a different town where we go a few times a year went downhill. The one in that other town where we holiday seemed to be OK, but last time we went last October, it was absolutely dire.

All three have gone the same way. Ridiculously cold as they're clearly not putting the heating on anymore. The cafes are now awful - barely any staff, lots of hot food options "unavailable", constantly unavailable. And so many empty shelves. On the last holiday, we went in for a few things just before lunch - barely any sandwiches, the "hot" food was virtually empty (i.e. no sausage rolls, pies, etc), and the chilled meat cabinets barely had any ready meals etc. It was apocalyptic. It wasn't a one off, we'd seen that regularly in our two more local ones too. Stock holding cut right down to the bone.

The entire chain is definitely on it's way out. Apparently been purchased by Americans who've completely ignored the whole ethos of the chain right back to being founded by William Morrison himself and then grown into a huge chain by Ken Morrison.

Themee · 22/03/2025 11:25

It’s a shame, I’ve always liked Morrisons because the children’s clothes are lovely and I rate their nappies too. I also like the salad bar.

FofB · 22/03/2025 11:32

Yep. Our was visited by Environmental Health and scored a 1. Found rats and maggots in the back area. Still has a one 6 months later. If you get a terrible score, you can make amendments and ask them to re-visit. They have not.

bugaboo218 · 22/03/2025 11:47

Yes, our local Morrisons has very much gone downhill and the prices are exorbitant.

It is also dark, dingy and grubby.

Morrisons own brand products mostly used to be excellent quality, but not anymore.

I used to love Morrisons salad bar, butcher and fish counter and especially their cakes and freshly baked bread- now it is all rubbish.

Try to avoid Morrisons for shopping if I can, but it is our closest supermarket.

catzrulz · 22/03/2025 11:53

Yes. Ours is awful now, no nightshift stocking up (to save money, apparently) so it's a nightmare getting round with all the cages out.
They also announced they're being green by not having as many lights on and the heating lower, it's now just a dark cold experience.
Our only other supermarket is a small co-op which is worse!
We are rural west of Scotland, it's use it or drive 60 odd miles to the next big town.

Darkclothes · 22/03/2025 11:53

I also like the salad bar

Also known as a 'Salmonella Salad' or the 'Line of Listeria' 😱

flyinghen · 22/03/2025 11:53

We avoid it as it’s so expensive now, we shop at Sainsbury’s which is much cheaper and nicer. Although their clothes fit my little girl really well so I do go get her clothes there.

Likeagreatcardi · 22/03/2025 12:04

Not just me . We used to use it regularly and for our main shop . Haven't done that for a year or so now , gone back to Sainsbury's , much tidier , better stock & nicer laid out .

I have a soft spot for our local Morrisons, so I’m going to stick up for it!

It’s always quiet compared to the Aldi, which is horrible to shop in ( people hogging the aisles, middle lane trolly pushers) but I will admit it does have a rather dystopian, slightly zombie like feel to it. I’ve been in mid morning many times and the lights have been off in the aisles ( saving energy? kind of makes sense if it’s quiet, I suppose)

I like that I have the aisles practically to myself.
Other plus points are they always have my Jason’s Sourdough in stock🫣

They also heavily discount food when it’s near its sell by date but they do it at random times so you don’t get the grabbers who take everything, like you can do in other supermarkets. I’ve had some real bargains before and they always have things I want in stock. I like the world food aisle too.

WorthySloth · 22/03/2025 12:11

Husband works there. I used to. Staff morale is through the floor staff are not replaced when they leave which makes more work for everyone. Pay is poor pretty much minimum wage. Perks like staff canteen have gone.

lots of managers tho…. Never seem to cut down on them.

DenholmElliot11 · 22/03/2025 12:51

Yep! They are obviously running it right down getting ready for a buy out. It’s shit.

DMCWelshcakes · 22/03/2025 13:47

Someone was sexually assaulted in one not far from us the other week. I'm not holding Morrisons personally responsible, but I can't imagine that the dystopian lighting and lack of staff helped the situation.

Treesarenotforeating · 22/03/2025 13:51

We go to one occasionally for a change and there’s always at least one fridge leaking water all over the floor, rarely get everything we need
