Trump, as out of control as a faulty Tesla, takes an ICE pick to the Constitution.

Thanks to @AcrossthePond55 and @Jaichangecentfoisdenom for the thread title and sub-title 😊

It’s liberation (I.e. tariffs) day.

but only after 4pm (stock markey closure)

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2025 09:11

A tricky evening awaits in the Tokyo household, Don's Bigly Tariff Announcement is right in the middle of the Merseyside Derby! I am going to have to use 2 screens!

Do we think there will be a load of bluster about how the US won't be 'ripped off' and then either watered down tariffs or all this business of tariffs being applied, and then suspended hokey cokey nonsense?

Honestly, the admin that he creates must be a nightmare!

Ah, I’ve just looked that up, a Mango Mussolini speciality. Will that not cause just as much havoc for the US as for the rest of the world? Or am I missing something?

Yes - Dumpy's tariffs announcement due at 4pm EDT today.

C&P from NYT:
The president has taken to calling this “liberation day,” arguing that it will end years of other countries “ripping us off.”

...The Trump administration has been weighing different options, including a 20 percent flat tariff on all imports. But advisers have also discussed the idea of assigning different tariff levels to different countries, depending on the trade barriers they impose against American products.

...It’s not yet clear which countries could be hit by the Trump reciprocal tariffs, or what rate they might pay. But in media interviews, administration officials have mentioned the “dirty 15,” a reference to a group of countries that have tariffs on American products and run large trade deficits with the United States.

...The president has also maintained that tariffs will rake in huge sums of revenue that the government can use to pay for tax cuts and spending and even to balance the federal budget. But economists point out that tariffs can actually reduce tax revenue if the economy shrinks because consumers spend less as imported goods get more expensive.

...For American families, the very likely result is higher prices at grocery stores, car dealerships, electronics retailers and the pump. Fresh produce, much of which is imported from Mexico, is one of the first categories where shoppers might notice an uptick in prices. It could happen within a couple of weeks for Mexican avocados, tomatoes and strawberries, among other products.

Anyone else remember when there used to be queues at petrol stations in the UK when people filled up before 6pm on budget day ?

Oh, they do, do they?

US officials object to European push to buy weapons locally.

US officials have told European allies they want them to keep buying American-made arms, amid recent moves by the European Union to limit US manufacturers' participation in weapons tenders.

What does the US want Europe, UK to buy to balance out the deficit, more agri-food products? I read yesterday about a New York Deli (?) shop owner preempting this and buying up loads of Parmesan. Does Trump want that to be made in the U.S.?

PickAChew · 02/04/2025 10:06

I'm choosing to focus on the amazing feat of Cory Booker today. The Guardian calls it a "...primal scream of resistance."
I hope he recovers easily, having not eaten or even drunk anything so that he could keep going. It's heroic stuff and it's garnered a good deal of attention. So heartfelt. Puts the Repugs to shame.

We can't really do that. Unfortunately the US is too unreliable a trading partner and the last thing we need is them refusing to sell parts or making parts prohibitively expensive.

So soz American arms manufacturers.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 02/04/2025 12:41

Has anyone noticed the increased censorship on Facebook at the moment? Heather Cox Richardson’s posts are disappearing gradually, for one thing. I think something similar is happening everywhere public figures dare to criticise the orange POS and his mates.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 02/04/2025 12:44

About the military equipment sales to Europe, unfortunately, as I understand it, the trading partner pushing themselves forward to take over from the US to supply the EU is governed by another dangerous right wing lunatic religious extremist dictator, though this one is Muslim. Rock and a hard place.

Igotjelly · 02/04/2025 12:54

The Daily Mail (sorry) are pretty consistently saying that the US and Israel are leaking to them about plans to bomb Iran in the coming weeks. Thought Trump wanted to be the president of peace 🤔

CaveMum · 02/04/2025 13:32

According to TRIP US, and others, there are constant leaks coming from WH briefing against Howard Lutnick, suggesting that his commerce policy (aka The Bigly Tarrifs) is not going over well.

So much for a leak-free WH, eh Suzie?!

TokyoSushi · 02/04/2025 13:44

“America’s renewed strength” hey? Goodness knows what they're expecting! Nuts!

Talkinpeace · 02/04/2025 13:50

Not strictly a Trump story, but Israel bury ambulances it bombed will narrow other options and perspectives around the world.
I avoid the Gaza topic, but the timing of their actions are "interesting"

No compliance department I have ever worked with would now sign off any purchasing from the US without additional RAG mitigation in the company risk register.

That alone adds $$$ to any proposal (it wasn't needed with EU suppliers when we were in the EU)
