MLM & En-suites. Generally hated on MN but why?

Tumblingthrough · 11/03/2025 20:16

I love my en-suite and have no problem buying from MLM and can’t understand the hate.

What else?
Cyclists?

I don’t think I’ve observed any en suite hatred. MLMs are pretty obvious, surely?

Ponderingwindow · 11/03/2025 20:44

not really related things

love my en-suite, but my room is large enough that it doesn’t feel cramped. I have a huge soaking tub in the room that I love. It’s my sanctuary.

mlm are hated because they prey on vulnerable people, most often women, who are looking for ways to support themselves. The sellers are the real customers. Women who are often desperate to find a way to make money while caring for children invest large amounts of money in exchange for the chance to try to sell products on behalf of a company. They make a small cut in exchange for their labor and take a huge risk. The companies don’t really care if the sellers succeed or not. Those initial sign-on investments and the pressure to keep inventory on hand or even mandatory minimums are the real product they are selling.

MLM are a predatory 'model' of business that targets women and mothers disproportionately, promising fake earning opportunities that never materialise and leading to financial ruin and destroyed relationships. They are pyramid schemes, nothing more. The products are usually poor quality and can be bought for a fraction of the cost elsewhere.

All of this.

MLMs are exploitative and also often have links to very dodgy people if you dig far enough. They are a form of pyramid scheme that targets women at their most vulnerable

SnoozingFox · 11/03/2025 20:53

MLMs should be illegal as nobody makes money and the people up the pyramid are just out and out liars.

YouOKHun · 11/03/2025 21:20

There was research carried out in the USA that looked at the numbers entering an MLM who then lose money. In the US MLMs must publish an income disclosure which states the % making money and at what level. Even with the manipulation of data MLMs by their own admission state that around 80-90% make no money. When the independent research was done it was found that 99.6% of all those signing up to MLM lose money once their expenses are factored in. That isn't an "opportunity", it's a scam. And it's a scam that targets women who are more likely to have disruption to their employment or be seeking flexibility. Purchase from an MLM and you're supporting something that causes huge damage, not just financial but social too.

Agree with this for MLMs
I admit i have recently bought some tropics products, from a friend, however she does it to complement another (non MLM) business, and doesnt really do a hard sell, or try to recruit others.

I don't have any problem with ensuites, and it is used for any bodily function requiring a toilet!!

but I know lots of MN have issues with them usually involving the words grim and vile, and likening it to taking a dump on your pillow

Tumblingthrough · 11/03/2025 21:43

Thanks for explaining about MLMs. My experience of them obviously isn’t typical and I have friends who have supplemented their income well using them. I’ve always been happy with the products too!

I'm fed up of seeing all the MLM 'Travel Agents' boasting about all the great holidays they have been on with their commission. When major companies have to go through hoops, the fact that Tracy from number 9 can set herself up as a Travel agent by paying £100 and attending a training session really irks me.

No33 · 11/03/2025 21:57

What are you selling OP?

Even MLMs are turning against the model.
Bodi, body shop, Rodan and fields, AdvoCare and thirty one gifts to name 4.

Your friends are lying about making any money and if they do make any money, they'll have worked 100 hours for every £1 made.

ChewbaccaAteMyHamster · 11/03/2025 22:00

I think conservatorys get more hate than en-suites on here. And houses without a downstairs loo.

cait967 · 11/03/2025 22:04

The en-suite hate tends to be when they are crammed jn just to have one.

Mlms are vile. They prey on people and are nothing more than scams. If the products that good then sell it in the shops or online

Needmorelego · 11/03/2025 22:04

I wouldn't want a en-suite because I'd prefer more storage space.
I have lots of stuff - but no where to keep it.
An extra lav and shower seems like such a waste of space.
As for MLMs - I have several family members that sold/worked for Avon and did ok. But that was in the 80s/90s. I don't know what it's like now.
I've bought from Usborne Book sellers. Don't have a problem with that.

camelfinger · 11/03/2025 22:07

En suites are good if there is space. Not a good selling point to squish one in a tiny unremarkable house. JMO.
MLMs “please support my small business by buying this shit”. Fuck off, I just want to buy a big bottle of shower gel from Tesco without involving anyone else thanks.

I’m not selling anything.

I like Tropic products though (buy from a friend) and still have Pampered Chef products going strong. Loved Virgin Vie

Pps have covered it with MLMs... everyone who wants to recruit to a pyramid scheme has to pretend their 'making good money'... that's the model!

But the thing I really hate about it is that these companies are worming their way into, and exploiting, female friendships. They need to keep their grubby little paws off.

cait967 · 12/03/2025 07:56

And the “line”. Oh I’m only doing it for the discount I just really love the products!

WonkyDonkeyWonkeyDonkey · 12/03/2025 08:02

Your friends are probably not telling the truth as it’s embarrassing to say you have spent a load of money on leggings or candles and now you can’t sell them. Most of the money made on MLM is made by selling ‘kits’ and stock to the people who are supposed to be selling them.

A relative set herself up as a travel agent and 'worked' at this for two years. She made £43 profit in that period for a lot of work and training.

En suites = shitting in your own bedroom and hearing your partner do so 😕

chatw0o0p · 12/03/2025 08:14

I've noticed a few people get worked up about 'pooing next to / in the bedroom' re ensuites.

You don’t have to use them for shitting in you know.

Hearing and smelling your partner doing so isn’t an en-suite problem, it’s a disrespectful partner problem.

I don’t have an issue with en-suites. I wish I could have one myself tbh. It would make life easier.

MLM’s I loathe entirely. They’re dishonest, and prey on the vulnerable. Even friends I would consider to be sensible, have fallen for their bollocks. The amount of times I have to say “No, I don’t support MLMs” to friends, and then educate them as to why they are terrible and exploitative is ridiculous. People need to do research before they sign up to work for these companies.
