MLM & En-suites. Generally hated on MN but why?

I love my en-suite and have no problem buying from MLM and can’t understand the hate.

What else?
Cyclists?

Thanks for explaining about MLMs. My experience of them obviously isn’t typical and I have friends who have supplemented their income well using them. I’ve always been happy with the products too!

They are definitely lying or they are their own best customers. We had an influx of people sign up for unique in my area a few years back and a few of my friends fell for it and were told to fake it til you make it to recruit others. It's so predatory and full of bull shit.

Needmorelego · 12/03/2025 12:38

"You don’t have to use them for shitting in you know"

So if you can manage to leave your bedroom to walk to a bathroom to do a poo - what's the point of having an en suite?

Kpo58 · 12/03/2025 12:55

I'd much rather have a second bathroom to an ensuite. I don't want to be relaxing in my bedroom and the have a child or friend bursting in to have a crap in the toilet as Sandra is taking too long in the bathroom. Also they normally use up valuable cupboard space in a normally already cramped room.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 12/03/2025 13:10

We live in an old b&b and the children have en suites, ds2 has the old family bathroom as his ensuite, his bedroom is about the same size but he likes it

the other two children come for visits, and they only ever use their en suite toilets which i find a bit weird 😀

They all have to claim to be doing well in the hope they will recruit more people

Mumsnetters did a lot of work exposing the level of lies a few years back.

All of this.

MLMs are exploitative and also often have links to very dodgy people if you dig far enough. They are a form of pyramid scheme that targets women at their most vulnerable

Exactly. Trash.

Givemethesun · 12/03/2025 13:26

Didn’t realise there was so much hate for en suites 🤣

LifeExperience · 12/03/2025 13:29

Maybe in the UK many don't like ensuites because houses are so small. As an adult I've never lived in a house without one because they are standard in the US. My current house has a pocket door from the bedroom into a room with a bath, shower and two sinks, one for dh and one for me. Beyond that is a door which opens into a private toilet cubicle with a fan that vents to the outside, and beyond that is a linen closet and the door to our shared walk-in closet. This is a typical master bath (as we call it) layout.

I have never heard toilet noises coming from the cubicle, nor have I smelled any bad smells due to the vent fan.

Ddakji · 12/03/2025 13:40

I don’t have an en-suite.

If I did have one I would want it to have a WINDOW and a decent-sized shower. Don’t like ones that are cupboard-sized with no window and a shower where you can’t get out from under the jet to soap yourself up.

As someone has said it's possibly because UK houses/flats are often small.
Many new builds (especially flats) don't have a decent space to store a hoover, or suitcases or seasonal stuff like a Christmas tree etc - yet they put in en-suite bathrooms.
Kitchens are tiny so you can't fit in a decent size freezer or tumble drier.
If it's a house there's often another blimmin lav downstairs too.
To me it's such a waste of space.

ginasevern · 12/03/2025 13:44

What's an MLM and what have they got to do with en suites?

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 12/03/2025 13:53

So many people on MN see en-suites as a non-negotiable essential; but one that must never actually be used.

It's a bit like people who want to live in the middle of nowhere, miles away from anybody or anything; but also to have an invisible motorway passing their home that only they know about and are allowed to use!

RampantIvy · 12/03/2025 13:56

Jk987 · 12/03/2025 08:08

En suites = shitting in your own bedroom and hearing your partner do so 😕

But it isn't the case for a lot of people.

Our ensuite isn't used for that purpose just before we go to bed. It has a window that we can open and a door we can close so our bedroom doesn't smell after it had been used.

The issue isn't the ensuite, but the users who use it selfishly.

What's an MLM and what have they got to do with en suites?

I represent BogByTheBed, which is an amazing company that's based on spreading the word and signing up your friends, so they can all benefit as well.

Best of all, everybody is guaranteed to make £1m a month for working just 6 hours a week.

Message me if you're really, really desperate and somewhat vulnerable...

YouOKHun · 12/03/2025 14:00

To tie the two disliked-on-mumsnet but apparently unrelated things together and having considered en suites and MLM side by side I've concluded the following:

Having an en suite can be like shitting in your bedroom but joining an MLM is like shitting all over your friends and family in the process of shitting on yourself whilst you are simultaneously shat on from a great height by all the people above you in the pyramid. The stink from an en suite is less than from MLM and having an en suite is unlikely to be as expensive. An en suite could cause some disharmony in a relationship but MLM is highly likely to damage your social network and intimate relationships once you have been pressured into monitising those relationships. En suites have to meet certain building regulations whereas MLM is completely unregulated in the UK. If you don't like your en suite you can move house but if you discover you are losing money in an MLM you may have moved yourself closer to having your house repossessed anyway (as I have seen happen to MLM victims).

On balance I'd rather live with an en suite.

You must live on your own if you can't imagine why many families want to have two bathrooms.

Redcrayons · 12/03/2025 14:01

I’ve no set opinions on en suites, haven’t got one, wouldn’t put one in because my house isn’t big enough and I’ve already got 2 toilets.

MLMs are a scam and they prey largely on women. The ones who are ‘successful’ usually have a DH earning proper money in the background to pay all the bills.

BarnacleBeasley · 12/03/2025 14:04

I don't have an en suite, but I do have a second bathroom with the door right next to my bedroom door. Most of the neighbouring houses have made that into an en suite, but I prefer the separate bathroom as I don't have to have another door in my bedroom (have put my wardrobe there, don't think it would fit anywhere else), and I don't disturb my partner when I go to bed later. It's not actually any further away than having an en suite.

When you see houses with lots of en suites, most of them tend to be shower rooms rather than baths and with small DC I always think that would be annoying if the only bath is miles away from their bedroom. I guess I might revise my view once mine are teenagers though.

MLMs are awful.

Have they though? Or are they victims of the "fake it til you make it" ma tea that's peddled to them.

BarnacleBeasley · 12/03/2025 14:29

Okay, so it is a separate room, but a door doesn't block out as much sound as a wall does, so there's more potential for disturbing a sleeping partner. @LifeExperience's setup with another door inside the en suite leading to the toilet beyond sounds a bit nicer. I also find in hotels that often it's hard to turn the light on and get in the room without shining light into the bedroom, though I'm sure there are ways round this.

Yes if I had a bigger family I might want a second bathroom but I would also like somewhere to actually store useful household items like a hoover.
Storage space for me is more important than an extra bathroom.
If I had to choose out of the two I would prioritise storage.

No no, I'm all for a downstairs loo. We out in, giving up the closet. BEST DECISION EVER.

couldn't give two hoots about having an ensuite
