School Hymns?!

On the back of a recent thread about religious teachings in UK schools it made me think back of when I was at primary and the songs we sang in assembly!

I'm not at all religious but I do look back fondly on belting out some classics between the ages of 5 & 11!

Personally, my favourites were

'who built the arc - NOAH NOAH'
'peace is flowing like a river'
'Dance Dance wherever you may be'

I also cant listen to a class of reception aged babies singing 'it was on a starry night' without crying!

What were your favourites?!

When A Knight Won His Spurs

Blackberries in the Hedges (not the same as Cauliflowers Fluffy and IMO much superior!)

We Plough the Fields and Scatter
(and probably most harvest festival hymns, in all honesty)

Lord of the Dance

wizzler · 04/03/2025 20:36

Glad that I live am I

Daisies are our silver, buttercups our gold

Oh Jesus I have promised

I know the words to all of them from 50 years ago but can't remember the registration number of my car !

NewtonsCradle · 04/03/2025 20:38

Jubilate, everybody,
serve the Lord in all your ways,
and come before His presence singing:
enter now His courts with praise.
For the Lord our God is gracious,
and His mercy everlasting.
Jubilate, jubilate, jubilate Deo!

DollopOfFun · 04/03/2025 20:44

Not sure of any of the actual titles, but:

'Ri-ise and shi-ine, and give God his glory, glory'(about Noah?)

'At the feet of Jesus, every knee shall bow'

'Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us, you are one with us. Mary's son'

TinyMouseTheatre · 04/03/2025 20:45

'Lord Jesus Christ, you have come to us, you are one with us. Mary's son

Oh I'd forgotten that one. I liked that one too.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/03/2025 20:49

'At the feet of Jesus, every knee shall bow'

Loved this one! And 'When a knight won his spurs...'.

Can't stand the happy clappy ones like 'Shine Jesus shine'! I've been a secondary school teacher for 30 years and it's really sad that there's no communal singing any more (except in church schools, presumably). I miss it. My school has a school song and none of the kids actually know it or are taught to sing it. They mumble along with it once a year in the final assembly.

Fuzzy wuzzy bear one

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 04/03/2025 20:56

I love 'It was on a starry night' too 😂

My favourite at school were a mix of zany and depressing:

There are hundreds and thousands...
I just thank you Father for making me me
Think of a world
There is a green hill faraway

My favourite 'church' hymns are 'All Creatures that on Earth do dwell (old 100th)', 'My Song is Love Unknown' and 'Be Still My Soul (Finlandia)'.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 04/03/2025 20:57

I was only in school here 4/5 until 8 then we emigrated, so most of these aren't familiar (in my new country we didn't sign hymns really. Just the national anthem.

but from my limited schooling here..

whole world in his hands

would you count 'morning has broken'?

& I learnt the Lord's Prayer & despite not being at all religious I still love hearing it & it brings me warmth & comfort.

As a teacher - Shine Jesus Shine, I the Lord of Sea and Sky.

TinyMouseTheatre · 04/03/2025 21:04

Not a school one but I loved The Day Thou Givest Lord has Ended.

PanickyBill · 04/03/2025 21:05

I can't remember the names but the lyrics are "I have seen the golden sunshine, I have watched the flowers grow" and "The golden cockerel crows in the morning, wake up children welcome the day'
