School Hymns?!

On the back of a recent thread about religious teachings in UK schools it made me think back of when I was at primary and the songs we sang in assembly!

I'm not at all religious but I do look back fondly on belting out some classics between the ages of 5 & 11!

Personally, my favourites were

'who built the arc - NOAH NOAH'
'peace is flowing like a river'
'Dance Dance wherever you may be'

I also cant listen to a class of reception aged babies singing 'it was on a starry night' without crying!

What were your favourites?!

Something about the Lord having a hammer

Loved onward Christian soldiers!!! I'd forgotten that

My fave hymn ever tho is Jerusalem.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 05/03/2025 06:53

Why is it that I can remember all these songs after 30+ years but barely remember what I had for breakfast?

I don't remember the hymn but I do remember being really bothered about Mary wiping the oil of Jesus' feet with her hair....seemed so unsanitary!

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 05/03/2025 07:15

Jerusalem, like it so much I had it it sung at my wedding and Land of Hope and Glory, also sung at my wedding (about the only bit of my wedding I got a say in).

Where have all the flowers gone always made me super sad.

Not sure it's a hymn but we sang it

Also the ink is black the chalk is white together we learn to read and write

I love the versión sung by Marlene Dietrich (in German) sag mir wo die Blumen sind. When will they ever learn?

Not a school one but I loved The Day Thou Givest Lord has Ended.

One of my very favourites, too!

Plus, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind

Not sure we sang it at school, but ‘Eternal Father strong to save’ (for those in peril on the sea), was the favourite of DF, after surviving 2 RN years of the WW2 Battle of the Atlantic, so I’ve always loved that, too.

Shine Jesus Shine

I had that at my wedding; it fills me with joy.

Give me oil in my lamp.

Disneydatknee88 · 05/03/2025 09:47

Give me joy in my lamp was a banger. I also liked he's got the whole world in his hands and this little light of mine.

Flippercanorious · 05/03/2025 09:53

Does anyone know. Jesús gave me water? One of my favs

JeanPaulGagtier · 05/03/2025 10:00

Come and Praise hymn books! Such a great way to start the day. Am surprised so many schools don't do hymns any more as it gets the nlood flowing and serotonin...so good for learning! I guess it's the religiosity but a lot of them were more about morals.

YessicaHaircut · 05/03/2025 10:06

I was at primary school in the late 80s so basically the entire ‘Come and Praise’ book of hymns. Particularly
Water of life
Give me oil in my lamp (my best pal and I thought we were very cheeky singing “sing, banana, sing, banana” in the chorus)
One more step around the world I go

We used to sing those at Brownies too.

dudsville · 05/03/2025 10:11

OP, I loved Lord of the dance! I'd forgotten about that, off to play it now.

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 05/03/2025 10:20

None. It still pisses me off that children are forced to sing hymns at school.
Mine was a church school so we were marched along the lane to the church every week for prayers as well as yet more in school each morning to start assembly.

Great thread @namechangeGOT ! Enjoying remembering so many thanks to everyone’s listings. I was going to say When a knight won his spurs, but seeing various ones listed it is now hard to choose one or two. I just loved a good full on burst of song to start the day. I must scare the household make it part of my morning routine!
