School Hymns?!

On the back of a recent thread about religious teachings in UK schools it made me think back of when I was at primary and the songs we sang in assembly!

I'm not at all religious but I do look back fondly on belting out some classics between the ages of 5 & 11!

Personally, my favourites were

'who built the arc - NOAH NOAH'
'peace is flowing like a river'
'Dance Dance wherever you may be'

I also cant listen to a class of reception aged babies singing 'it was on a starry night' without crying!

What were your favourites?!

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind - mainly because it was in TV adaptation, can't remember the title, set in the 1930s about a schoolteacher.
Thought I do still like that hymn.
My least favourite I f-ing hate it was Go tell it on the mountain.

Oh and one with something to do with wiping away with her hair. The boys and girls would sing separate bits.

Last assembly of the year in secondary we would always sing God be with you til we meet again. I also love the ones already mentioned (some from when I was at school and some from my daughter) . Another one that I love that hasn't been mentioned yet is Jerusalem

Autumn Days and Shine Jesus Shine by a mile.

I liked God Loves a Cheerful Giver too but it's now made me laugh at my grand old age that I've never seen the other meaning there could be there!

Bread and Fishes and Abundantly also play a lot in my head.

My favourite now is Bread of Heaven. Can't get through it without crying.

Oh and one with something to do with wiping away with her hair. The boys and girls would sing separate bits.

Said Martha to Mary “now what have you done
With your ointment so rich and so rare?”
“I poured it all over the feet of Our Lord,
and I wiped it away with my hair” she said
”And I wiped it away with my hair”

Strawberries sweeter than any I've seen! Grin

Our hymn book was ' With Cheerful Voice,' and number 70 was my favourite : Remember All the People Who Live in Far off Lands.
Don't know if it would even be ok to sing today.

I loved the tune and the words were mysterious to me!

maggiesleapp · 04/03/2025 21:27

LBOCS2 · 04/03/2025 21:29

Our school song was 'To Be A Pilgrim' which I do still like. We didn't really do hymns, but did a good line in traditional carols, which are my favourites.

Here I am lord

Never sang this at school but my kids do. Always a bitt jealous that I never got to sing it when they have an assembly.

Lord of the dance and When a Knight Won his spurs were my favourites.

Myoldbear · 04/03/2025 21:33

LBOCS2 Oh I love the tune to that; it really takes me back.

Daisies are our silver,
Buttercups our gold:
This is all the treasure
We can have or hold.

Raindrops are our diamonds
And the morning dew;
While for shining sapphires
We've the speedwell blue.

These shall be our emeralds
Leaves so new and green;
Roses make the reddest
Rubies ever seen.

God, who gave these treasures
To your children small,
Teach us how to love them
And grow like them all.

Make us bright as silver:
Make us good as gold;
Warm as summer roses
Let our hearts unfold.

Gay as leaves in April,
Clear as drops of dew
God, who made the speedwell,
Keep us true to you.

OptareSolo · 04/03/2025 21:36

Shine, Jesus shine here was the ultimate school hymn. You knew the music teacher was in a very good mood when she played this on thr piano in assembly time.

If anyone fancies any out and out nostalgia, look for someone called James Partridge on YouTube. He's a primary school music teacher who went viral during lockdown by posting a video called 'primary school assembly bangers'. He goes through old school song books singing/playing assembly songs.
