School Hymns?!

On the back of a recent thread about religious teachings in UK schools it made me think back of when I was at primary and the songs we sang in assembly!

I'm not at all religious but I do look back fondly on belting out some classics between the ages of 5 & 11!

Personally, my favourites were

'who built the arc - NOAH NOAH'
'peace is flowing like a river'
'Dance Dance wherever you may be'

I also cant listen to a class of reception aged babies singing 'it was on a starry night' without crying!

What were your favourites?!

Said Martha to Mary “now what have you done
With your ointment so rich and so rare?”
“I poured it all over the feet of Our Lord,
and I wiped it away with my hair” she said
”And I wiped it away with my hair”

Thank you 😊

Yes the boys would sing the ''she said'' bit all low pitched against the high pitch of the girls with all the rest lol

Shine, Jesus shine here was the ultimate school hymn. You knew the music teacher was in a very good mood when she played this on thr piano in assembly time.

If anyone fancies any out and out nostalgia, look for someone called James Partridge on YouTube. He's a primary school music teacher who went viral during lockdown by posting a video called 'primary school assembly bangers'. He goes through old school song books singing/playing assembly songs.

I watched it recently and it really bought back some great memories.
As a previous poster said its a shame most schools don't do communal singing anymore in assembly. My children's primary and secondary still sing in assembly which I really like. My secondary child came home the other day and told me excitedly that they'd some a particular hymn in assembly ( I can't remember what it was).
I also like that they sing some of the same ones i did as well.

As well as the ones already mentioned:

You Shall Go out With Joy (The Trees of the Field)

On Tiptoe

This one makes me cry as it really takes me back. So much time has passed since then and some of our teachers and several of the children are no longer here.

Kum by yah - or whatever it was... not a clue what I was singing about but loved it anyway.

Sing hosannah was a personal favourite though. You could really let yourself go for this one... happy days!

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/03/2025 22:13

At primary school- Sing Hosanna and Away in a Manger.
At secondary school- God is Our Strength and Refuge and The Charterhouse Carol.

Isn't Sing Hosanna the chorus to give me oil in my lamp?

I love that Bex had it at his wedding and danced as only he can .

I remember the little donkey one differently to everyone I've mentioned it to.

"Clip clop, dear little donkey."
Then something about eating hay every day? I've never been able to find it but I loved singing it in primary school.

Butteredtoast55 · 04/03/2025 22:46

@Flippercanorious
Is it
I cannot come to the banquet, don't bother me now
I have married a wife, I have bought me a cow
I have fields and commitments that cost a pretty sum,
Don't bother me now, I cannot come

Having been the one teaching the songs and leading Hymn Practice every week for many years, I do miss singing every day!

I can't remember the names but the lyrics are "I have seen the golden sunshine, I have watched the flowers grow" and "The golden cockerel crows in the morning, wake up children welcome the day'

Oh we didn’t have all of these but I remember that one from primary

I have seen the golden sunshine
I have watched the flowers grow
i have listened to the songbirds
and there’s one thing now I know
They were all put there for us to share
By someone so divine
And if you’re a friend of Jesus (clap clap clap clap)
You’re a friend of mine

We never had the Martha Mary one

Maaate · 04/03/2025 23:25

GOOOOOO tell it on the mountain...

Over the hills and everywhere....

GOOOOOO tell it on the mountain...

That jesus Christ is born

Adarajames · 05/03/2025 03:36

So so many, I can still sing literally hundreds of them. Having recently returned to singing in a church choir I am amazed at how many I do remember.

it’s interesting that I can guess who is younger / older / same age as me from the hymns you’re listing 😊
