I think we all (myself included) need to be careful not to focus on the many many negative news stories coming out of the US, or it’s going to be a very long 4 years. Maybe we should try to post at least 1 positive story (doesn’t have to have anything to do with politics necessarily) each day.

Poor old Trump. He still thinks he's President and no one has the heart to tell him that actually Musk and Putin are currently job sharing that position

I think as long as he gets to be on TV, have a firehose of Diet Coke delivered, fly around on air force one, grift, golf and stay out of prison, he's perfectly happy with that arrangement.

Hope so. If they had a bloody melt down while in charge of a sub machine gun it wouldn't be pretty. You can mend walls and buy new doors but not new people. Glad we went to the GP with the door related injury so it is on medical records now.

Anyone can have a meltdown in a war situation. It’s not mentally pleasant for anyone.

But not everyone would be curled on the ground in terror, covering their ears at the first loud bang. DS wouldn't make it through basic training.

The House just voted to censure Rep. Al Green for disrupting Trump's address to Congress.

I think some people "self diagnose" autistic to mean socially awkward. People do this with OCD as well. And parents use language for autistic children (meltdown) to describe behaviour (tantrum from overtiredness) in their NT children. It means some people aren't aware of what the reality of autism/autistic meltdowns is or assume an actual meltdown is just another tantrum. BUT I suspect, even in times when there was much less awareness of autism kids like your son would not have made it through basic training. They do actually try their best to sift out people who would be a genuine liability on the front line (no offense to your son but you know what I mean). Shortsighted people don't get to be RAF pilots. The language might have been different in the past but "this person is completely unsuited" was a thing before dyspraxia/autism were ever heard of. So, even in the unlikely event that there was conscription I would not worry unduly. What could happen of course is that they take young people with specific talents into non-frontline positions.

So... I don't think there will be conscription (the biggest opponents of National Service are army chiefs) but even if there was I don't think putting volatile autistic young men on the front lines will be a thing.

Sorry I realise I should have said "conscription in the UK". I understand it is different in Nordic countries.

Not everyone is likely to melt down just for the wrong shaped biscuit or a cancelled TV program or because it's raining, though. I'm sure you wouldn't want a son or daughter of your own working alongside someone with that level of impairment in a life or death situation.

To the extent of my knowledge Trump has declared a USMCA carveout for Mexico from his 25% tariffs and a car-industry exemption from both the Mexico and Canada ones. None of these have been published yet. Corrections welcome.

I would be very very surprised if Newsom could win a primary, so I hope he like podcasting.

On one level this is devastating for the scientists losing their funding and is terrible for research. Bit of it’s true there’s a level on which it’s completely hilarious that the orange blimp can’t tell the difference between the words transgender and transgenic. Anyone still arguing his bleach comments were taken out of context after he was briefed by scientists needs to get in the bin.
