China are not happy with the US and Russia deciding on the proposed peace deal

Ooh where have you seen that? I thought they’d been suspiciously quiet over it all.

MMBaranova · 06/03/2025 16:27

Poroshenko is working hard supporting the war effort. He has never been overjoyed about Zelensky (who beat him in the last election, and there was a peaceful transition, but later treason charges were brought against him). He has done a lot to supply armaments.

Tymoshenko is a former PM and of course met Putin when she was able to out-Slav him post-Orange revolution. Half my older relatives loved her when she was at her peak.

Both are figures from the Maydan Revolution, but neither were really there (see Spiegel image). Neither was Zelinsky but that is an opaque use of Russian language arguments rabbit hole. Klitschko was, and has a niche position as Kyiv Mayor. Zelinsky somehow hasn't managed to sack him. Yulia was of course imprisoned during the Revolution of Dignity protests, until right at the end when there was the Yanukovych collapse and flight. Poroshenko defeated her in the post-Maydan Presidential election.

Images: Yalta agreement signing in 2009. Putin was Russian PM at the time, observing a constitutional nicety and letting Medvedev be President (Yushchenko key figurehead of the Orange Revolution was Ua President then).

Yulia Tymoshenko in a wheelchair, freed from prison and with enough time to fix the braids, addressing the revolutionary crowd.

Poroshenko the mediator being told 'Piss of you Jewish Garbage'.

Klitschko sprayed by a fire extinguisher during Euromaydan.

R/S on the latest TRIP podcast is spot on. Europe needs to stop playing Trump’s game, he doesn’t give a shit about us and we’re embarrassing ourselves over and over again bending over backwards to try and meet his demands.

I never thought I'd feel happy about China making an announcement πŸ˜‚

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/03/2025 16:59

I'm wondering if China is going to be the primary world power far faster than anticipated.

MMBaranova · 06/03/2025 17:05

China as primary power? If not already. Depends how you measure things.

The USA has been a declining imperial republic with a tendency towards gerontocracy for decades. That does not mean it is spent. That does not mean that it has not in general been an ally to Western countries. In the last month it has taken a turn towards self-harm, cruelty and being offensive to allies.

Trump sees China as a threat, and not without reason. China has plenty of problems, but so does everywhere else.

Well I never saw that one coming.

If that's where US has set its sights then they must think so. Doesn't China 'own' large segments of Africa and mine large areas of Russian land? It feels like everything is now made there. What other country comes close?

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 06/03/2025 17:23

Sorry meant to quote @Ducks

This supports that to a great extent this Trump administration is going to do what it's already decided to do.

There's lots of window-dressing to try to distract and displace blame.

They will repeatedly tell us everything they do is in response to some "bad behaviour" they've detected in us; in reality very little will be a response to us.

In that case, if what the Trump administration is going to do is a fait accompli no matter what Zelensky or Europe says or does, then Ukraine should not sign the minerals deal with the US.

Sign it with Europe. We will just have to be stronger together.

MMBaranova · 06/03/2025 18:28

As the ratio of arms supplied from USA & Europe seems to be about 4:5, Europe gets over half the mineral rights. Fair deal and all that. Plus Alaska.

Oh no Russia gets that back. It is one of the states probably excluded from the invitation to join Canada.

Russia has accused France of β€œnuclear blackmail” πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ fucking cheek!

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 06/03/2025 19:32

MagicFox · 06/03/2025 19:12

That's a fantastic speech and it should be wisely shared.
I hope he's right about Americans (not the cultish MAGA faithful obviously) starting to turn against Trump. There must surely be some who voted for him thinking 'WTF, I just wanted a stronger economy and less immigration - I didn't vote for this!'

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 06/03/2025 19:46

Widely shared not 'wisely'

Stunning speech

dibly · 06/03/2025 20:01

On Ukraine’s minerals, they belong to Ukraine. I don’t want any part of our government negotiating for them, it will take years and multi-billions to rebuild Ukraine after this war, and longer still for them to feel at peace again.

Also saw something about Starmer playing the long game with the US, and not bowing to populism by making grand speeches and gestures towards Trump, but instead publicly reserved whilst quietly exercising firm diplomacy. But I bloody like the pics of the King wearing his Canadian military uniform in the last few days!

Oooh has he? Off to have a look

I agree about the minerals, I wish the deal with the US would f off. Although I have looked at it a bit more and I don't think it's terrible, it's certainly not the 500b repayment (!!!) Trump initially included.

There is potentially a fortune under the land taken by Russia as well...

But yes I wish they had to chance to genuinely work with whomever will help them most in the future instead of being strong armed

I should have introduced myself as a long term lurker btw. Good source of info and often hope on these threads...
