Do you know a lottery winner...? Or have u won a substantial prize?

I was thinking with the amount of people on mumsnet, that some of us should know people who have won a big prize on the lotto/euromillions/euro raffle/set for life/scratchcards etc? I do and they won tens of millions.. fantastic!

I never used to play but started to a couple weeks ago mainly the set for life, I did play the valentines euro and won 11.30 for 2 numbers and both lucky stars.. bit disappointed with the amount but it's better than nothing I suppose 😉 but I did expect more for getting 4 numbers.

What did they do with their winnings? How are they now? Did they disappear? Or still around?

Maybe some of us have been lucky enough to win big..? I haven't unfortunately.. but would love for people to share their stories if there are any lucky winners on here? 😂 what is the most you have won? And how?

@CottonCandyCrank sadly not even one match on the euro millions for me either. Great thread btw….nice to hear good stories and sad about those whose life didn’t really change…in fact, got worse since since winning

Edited

I find it interesting too to see both sides. Love the stories with happy endings 🥰 just so heartwarming and I feel genuinely so happy for them.

Some people just can't deal with winning huge amounts i guess so they struggle. Then some people really shouldn't win for their own protection, because it can make any personal issues I.e dependancy issues being made much much worse and just spiral cause they can afford whatever drink/drugs they want 😪

The worst and the ones I really can't understand, are the people who are the normal (seemingly) nice genuine type usually, before a win, but then they seem to have a whole personality transplant and just turn from being so lovely to toxic. It's crazy what money can do to different people. It can bring out the great, the good, the lovely and the damn ugly. You see it in this thread alone.. so different for everyone.

I'd like to think I wouldn't change as a person and that it'd bring me just a little more comfort, freedom, the nicer things in life and allow me to spend all my time with my family just living and loving life to the max. That's what it's all about. I'd certainly share with people I love and care about and make as many if them financially free... depending on the amount if course. Let's keep hoping and praying.. ONE DAY EH 🙏☺️

Neighbours where I used to live won the lottery, at least 100k I think.
childhood friend in school dad won the football pools

Rapunzel91 · 01/03/2025 22:18

I know of someone in my hometown who won big and they were very very excited and told everyone. No idea what they did with the money though.

Im very ready to win big on the lottery (speaking it into existence!). I’ll make such a good multimillionaire.

littlebilliie · 01/03/2025 22:22

£4m they were very happy

beguilingeyes · 01/03/2025 22:54

I worked with a guy whose sister won 2.7 million right back at the beginning of the lottery. She bought him a house and a car.

I know someone who won 1 million on a scratchcard on Christmas eve years ago.

Not Dave by any chance 😂

MorrisZapp · 24/12/2025 12:52

I won a hundred quid on a scratchcard yesterday! Felt amazing!

Fingalscave · 24/01/2026 14:13

I suspect my SIL and her husband have won a largish amount, not millions but maybe £100,000 or so. BIL is one of those pseudo intellectuals who thinks every job is beneath him so SIL has always been the main earner while he did very little, therefore they always struggled financially. For the last couple of years they've spent money like water- new car and lots of holidays and now looking at buying a motorhome. I'm glad for her, she deserves it. They wouldn't say anything to us as she once said years ago that if they won the lottery she wouldn't tell a soul.

2old4thispoo · 24/01/2026 14:19

Yes. Old friends won £1.1 million on the lottery.

Didn't make them happy.
They bought lots of property and carried on living as they always had.

MikeRafone · 24/01/2026 14:24

My old next door neighbours but one, won the lottery some 20 years ago. He was in a syndicate and his share was £400000

They made a lot of spontaneous decisions and the money frittered away rather quickly

At the time they could have purchased a couple of 3 bed houses in the area, now those houses would be worth £450,000 each

They don't live in the same house but moved about 15 years ago

MikeRafone · 24/01/2026 14:26

back in 1987 a woman that drank in the pub I worked won the football pools

It was a lot of money and she lived it up, travelling and had a good time - again after a few years it had all gone

Pedallleur · 24/01/2026 14:38

Reading this it's crazy how people seem to blow it. There was the dustman years ago who went through 10 million and nothing to show for it. £100k I can get you will spend it but a million upwards might be able to get you a quiet life as long as you don't go on spending sprees. If you did win a large amount why would you tell anyone. We read on MN all the time of people who have loaned money and then are regarded by friends/family as an ATM.

I teach the child of lottery winners. Utterly lovely people who are worth every penny they won.

TwistedWonder · 01/02/2026 00:19

My mums friend was one of the first winners. She was in a syndicate and think she won about 250k which 20 odd years ago was A LOT of money - not to be sniffed at now but then it was huge.

OhMehGoddess · 01/02/2026 00:57

Local guy in our town won about 14mil a few years ago. Didn’t go public with it.

I will keep on dreaming.

TheWildEyeBoyfromafreecloud · 01/02/2026 11:07

@BorgQueen do you mean her own mum ? Or an aunt ?

Maybe you need to spell it out to her or ask her why she's not helped them ?
Maybe they got aggressive and demanding with her so she decides no?
Shame like you said that normal amount on flights would be life changing for them

I dont understand the ones who go public after a huge lottery win! I know one who did and that was a euromillions win, even now I have never understood why? In fact I wish they hadn't gone public, i'd rather have never known.
