Do you know a lottery winner...? Or have u won a substantial prize?

I was thinking with the amount of people on mumsnet, that some of us should know people who have won a big prize on the lotto/euromillions/euro raffle/set for life/scratchcards etc? I do and they won tens of millions.. fantastic!

I never used to play but started to a couple weeks ago mainly the set for life, I did play the valentines euro and won 11.30 for 2 numbers and both lucky stars.. bit disappointed with the amount but it's better than nothing I suppose 😉 but I did expect more for getting 4 numbers.

What did they do with their winnings? How are they now? Did they disappear? Or still around?

Maybe some of us have been lucky enough to win big..? I haven't unfortunately.. but would love for people to share their stories if there are any lucky winners on here? 😂 what is the most you have won? And how?

I know someone who won 11 million, he is now bankrupt

Sorrelbird · 27/02/2025 17:09

I knew one who won a significant amount in the 80s (100s of £1000s in today’s money) put the lot into a business venture but had no clue what he was doing and went bankrupt.

Another local man won the lottery who I don’t know personally but I know people who do, he bought a flash car, lovely house, got a new model wife, and was divorced and lost the lot within a couple of years.

And someone else I know knew someone who won a large amount and ended up having a huge fallout with his two sons over it and they never spoke again.

I need to win the next Premium Bond draw to prove it doesn’t always lead to distress 😆

An elderly neighbour won just over £10 K on thePostcode lottery, spent it all on a new chair and died 3 days later. His DD told me this.

Oh that’s sad but I hope knowing he’d won made him feel happy.

A lady in our town won the Euromillions - she won £180 million. Absolutely crazy amount of money! I can't even begin to imagine it.

Wow! Did she stay anonymous? That is a crazy amount 🫣

I was just looking at the interest alone on 50 million, that could bring in over 2 million a year! Over £7k A DAY.... WTH 😬 jesus wept 🤑 never mind 180 mil! 🤒

We won £100k on a scratch card about 20 years ago. We were in a really bad situation financially, unexpected baby, were half way through a barn conversion which had structural issues and needed a lot of cash to remedy. So the winnings went straight into the house and took us to 0.

So definitely life changing in that we could stabilise ourselves financially and not sell our home, but no cruises etc!

No, it was in the papers. I've no idea what she's doing now, but she did leave her job 😁

A woman DH used to work with won a million. She split it with her dad, carried on working but I think treated herself to a few things. DH said she’s absolutely lovely and everyone was over the moon for her.

And my old manager won 30 odd thousand. Absolutely lovely woman who deserved it ten times over. I hadn’t worked with her for years but was so pleased for her when I heard about it.

BorgQueen · 27/02/2025 20:29

My Niece won what I assume was millions around 5 years ago, certainly enough for a £1.5million house, a motorhome and she drives a £120k car, she also bought a holiday lodge (£100k) for her Mum and Dad and follows the Grand prix circus around the world with her eldest DD.
She knows my elder Sister , her other Aunt, went through a hellish time financially and has never offered her a penny or even bought her any kind of gift, despite my Sister going out of her way to buy presents she couldn’t really afford for my Niece’s kids when they were young and supported her through very difficult times with her Mum ( our other Sister, who hasn’t bothered with either of us for years).

Knowing she could have immeasurably improved my Sister’s life for the price of probably one of her 1st class flights makes me quite angry and bitter.

PenneyFouryourthoughts · 27/02/2025 20:31

I suspect my DParents have won some big money on the PBs. Evidence: they suddenly were spending a lot more money on holidays, going out...and us, the family. They won't say though. They just seem ok with spending money more freely than before. My DB is happy because he gets spoilt, and I'm intrigued...

A couple in our small town won £161million on the Euromillions. They definitely treated some friends and family and gave some funds to local causes. Unfortunately they divorced a few years later and he has since passed away. I believe she moved not too far from here and bought a small country estate.

JohnofWessex · 27/02/2025 20:53

I won £140 a few years ago.

My two oldest sons & I went on the last ever service HST out of Paddington and it paid for me to have the two souvenir carriage labels framed

More recently I won £66 which went towards these

mumda · 27/02/2025 22:16

I have known two. The one who is dead now won a lot more and spent it badly. The other lives a good life and gives time and energy to his local community.

NeedWineNow · 27/02/2025 23:07

The son of some friends won the Set for Life £10,000 a month for the next 30 years. He has a young family and it has indeed set them up and given them security. They are a lovely family and I am really happy for them.

i know someone who won £50k on who wants to be a millionaire. She definitely got her teeth done, but she already took v nice holidays. I assume she banked the rest for a house deposit or similar as her life didn’t seem any different (other than the teeth)

Not RTFF but the options on millionaire have always been £32k or. £64k so not sure where £50k comes into it?

GrandTheftWalrus · 27/02/2025 23:55

I know the relatives of the couple who won the Euromillions from Scotland.

My friends parents won the £1 million prize from premium bonds about 15 years ago

Wow this is my dream!!

CottonCandyCrank · 28/02/2025 17:07

@BorgQueen awe that's a real shame that she didn't help your sister, or even you to be honest! But gladly goes on 1st class flights etc. I understand why you would feel that way 😪

I'd kind of understand it if someone's worked hard all their life to enable them to have that kind of lifestyle, but winning the lottery, it's just pure luck, and would expect someone to give some away to family

I once worked with someone whose daughter's best friend's family won millions (literally) on the lottery. It became a real source of bitterness for the person I worked with as she was always short of money and her daughter continued to spend a lot of time with her friend at the new mansion.

Thethruththewholetruth · 28/02/2025 19:43

The guy a few houses away won £1.5 million, he bought that house (lived just down the road before in the same village) still works self employed full time and lives on his own but he seems happy enough. Also some friends won, £3 million, they turned into twats to be honest which is a real shame so don’t see them anymore.

BelgianBeers · 28/02/2025 19:47

I know two big winners. One bought a rolls and posh cars and the other bought a nice house and shared with family. A friend won a 40k type prize.

UniqueShaker · 01/03/2025 20:00

I know of a few winners actually. A girl in my school her mum won on the lottery. Her mum was a gambling addict and alcoholic and went in to Morrisons to check her ticket and was told there she'd won. It was something like 1-3 million. Apparently she bought her council house, gave all of her children £10 for Christmas, her alcoholism got worse and she gambled it all away at the local bookies. Very sad really.

Then at my work a woman won a few thousand on the postcode lottery. The street next to her they won the big prize.

And my cousins ex boyfriends mum (my cousins child's grandma), won a few million on the lottery too.

Just waiting for it to be my turn now. lol. Closest I've ever got is I bought a few £1 scratch cards and won nothing, I thought well the odds are one in 4 I'll go in the shop and buy a fourth. Bloke infront of me at the till bought the one I was about to buy. He scratched it in the shop. I stayed to watch because I was about to buy it. He won £40. I'm still not over it haha! That was 16 years ago...

besides the odd £1-5 win I've never won a thing.

Awe that is sad.. still felt the need to gamble when she had won all that! £10 for xmas.. 😲 is that it? And to drink alot of it away.. that's a shame! Good have set her and her children to, at least with a house each etc or a lump sum to them all 😪

Most I've won is 200 on a scratchcard. And then a 100. I don't buy them that often now as I think that's my luck done with 🤣 that's just typical isn't it.. if he had gone in first you would have bought the winning one. Still not over it 16 years later 🤣 one dayym you never know.

Anyways.. I didn't win the euro last night or lotto tonight. Hoping for set for life on monday 🙏 Back to grind on Monday for now 😂

@CottonCandyCrank sadly not even one match on the euro millions for me either. Great thread btw….nice to hear good stories and sad about those whose life didn’t really change…in fact, got worse since since winning
